Tod picked up Esprit from school like usual and was currently walking him back to their apartment. He seemed irritated though, which wasn’t normal for someone who usually just took whatever life threw at them. He was looking over an old Nokia phone in his hands and pressing buttons several times. He gave exasperated sighs and tried to get it working.
“Hey Tod, everything good?” Esprit walked with a bounce in his step and strode a few paces ahead so he could turn and walk backwards while talking with Tod.
Tod looked up to the boy for a moment, “Ah yeah kid, don’t worry. My phone is just busted is all.” He looked back to his phone and watched it power off, whispering a frustrated “damn it…” under his breath.
“That old thing? I thought it was a fossil you were carrying around,” Esprit teased with a sharp toothed and mischievous grin.
“It is old, huh? Feels almost as old as me,” Tod gave a chuckle at Esprit’s joke.
“Mhm, so…” he started in a singsong voice, “Why don’t you get a new one?”
“I was already thinking about that, this one lasted me so long that I didn’t even wonder about when it might break,” he admitted and ran a hand through his hair, he did that when he was stressed, and he knew Esprit had picked up on it.
“No smoking… remember?” the boy said quietly.
“I know, this ain’t too bad. Don’t worry, I wont break my promise,” he nodded and gave Esprit a smile to make him feel a bit better. He figured he could just get another Nokia since this one had lasted a while anyways.
“I’ll go with you to pick it out!” he said with excitement and was already dragging Tod down the road by his good hand to the cellphone store.
Tod now sat at home, holding a new phone in his hand. It wasn’t the one that he had intended at all. No, this one was a smartphone, and as cool as that sounded the poor man had no idea how to use it. He stared at the startup screen.
“How’s it working?” Esprit asked after doing some homework. He sat next to Tod with a hum.
“It ain’t got buttons, so I just touch the screen?” he asked, pressing something.
“Yeah, wait…” Esprit looked at the screen, “You’re not past the setup screen?”
“I coulda just gotten a phone like my old one,” he said, “Instead of havin’ to do all this you know.”
“Yeah but think about it, now you only need one hand to use your phone!” Esprit grinned.
Tod put on a sweet smile and looked over his bad hand at the scarring that crossed over the back and how his knuckles didn’t exactly sit right. He knew Esprit was thinking about him, and that made him happy. He supposed he didn’t mind learning a new thing or two.
“Alright, just show me how this thing works already,” he ruffled his hair with the hand that wasn’t holding his phone.
Esprit gave a grin and a nod and happily began showing him.
