Essential Item #3: The Shoes
You’ve got your notebook and your foam roller. Your head is in the right place. Now it’s time to get some kicks. The obvious next question: which pair of shoes is the best one for me?
Short answer: whichever feels the best on your feet.
You can go to a shoe store and have a very knowledgeable shoe salesman / runner tell you, “These ‘fill-in-the-blank’ shoes are THE pair for you.” There may be some validity to such a strong statement if the individual has been doing their job for a while, but at the end of the day, the only person who knows which shoe is the best is you. When you put on the right shoe it should feel comfortable. The shoe should make your feet say, “I want to go for a run right now.” If you have even the slightest bit of tightness at the lip, or your toes are scrunched or it just doesn’t “feel right,” try another pair. And if you’re buying a pair of shoes for the aesthetic over the comfort, you’re probably buying the wrong shoe.
I’m more than happy to help steer you in the right direction if you have no idea where to start, but ultimately the only person who can tell you which shoe to buy is you…
