"I want the truth. All of it." There is a threat under his voice that is so unfamiliar she shivers.

"Where is Estarossa?" Moth asks.

Caim grits his teeth. "He is being interrogated. He and Meliodas arrived unannounced—"

"Meliodas is here too?" she gasps.

"Answer my question!" he shouts. "None of this makes any goddamned sense and there is a dead archangel outside our gates!" Caim moves to pull the wine glass from her hand, and she looks up in surprise as he drinks the rest down before throwing the glass into the hearth. "I will protect you with everything I have, even my life. If you have ever loved me, you will tell me the truth."

"Why are you being nice to me?" she mumbles into his shirt.

Estarossa laughs, and she smiles as she feels his chest rumble with the sound. His fingers stroke her hair, and it feels heavenly making her sigh as she leans against him. "Do you know what happened to the little boy who helped you clean up the vase?"

Moth furrows her brow. "No?"

"He went home and remembered you. He remembered how it felt to help someone else, and how you had thanked him. He remembered you, until he was given more power than he could handle and sent for training that would make him a soldier, not a friend." Moth looks up in confusion, and Estarossa traces his thumb on her jaw. "Then he was ordered to go back to help the girl's clan and instead of refusing, he decided to go and see if he could find her again."

Her eyes widen in realization and disbelief. He watches her carefully, his hand sliding to cradle the back of her neck, as he waits for her to say something, yet all she can think of is how, despite his blunt nature, he had treated her so kindly without any expectation of a reward, without caring about her rank or station. "Let me see," she whispers, and he tilts his head. "Let me see your eyes."

Estarossa tilts his head as his hair falls across his eyes. Moth reaches up and brushes them away, and the moment her fingers brush his forehead the blackness recedes. Her body melts as the color turns to a navy, then into a deep blue, and she recognizes them instantly.

There's a moment where he does not move at all, so that, when he does, she breathes a quiet sigh of relief. Estarossa says nothing as he works to carefully remove the necklace, his fingers grazing the nape of her neck and making her shiver, and then he drops it unceremoniously onto the vanity's surface. Unlike Mael, who had stroked her skin, he merely rests his hands on her shoulders, meeting her gaze evenly in the mirror. "You frustrate me," he says, his voice lacking any bite. She frowns, but he continues, "You interest me."

Moth leans her head back to look up at him, more than a little confused, and he moves to tug the zipper of her dress down just enough that she could slide out of it if she wished, something she should stop him from doing. Though she doesn't. "I fully expected a vapid creature more concerned with her looks and how she could use them to get what they wanted. Someone bland, someone spoiled. And you . . ."

His eyes narrow. "You aren't. You're far too stubborn for your own good, you won't fucking listen, you'll put yourself in harm's way if it means winning a sparring match and then cook me dinner because I showed you something simple."

"Estarossa," she murmurs, uncertain of what else to say, if he's insulting her or not.

"I'll keep you safe, Moth," he says quietly. Their eyes stay connected in their reflections, her lungs so tight she can barely breathe. "I won't let anything happen to you. And you don't have to marry anyone you don't want to. Not while I'm here."

She swallows around the lump that forms in her throat. "Thank you," she murmurs.

Hmmm I’m now wondering which is the joke... Thanks so much for the ask!

I’m answering this with Estarossa as he is in Dark Side Of The Moon.

do I like them: I ADORE both of them.

5 good qualities: Moth: she’s determined, intelligent, gives her best at all times, she’s kind-hearted and generous. Estarossa: he’s bold (one might almost say brazen lol), also determined, passionate, capable of great self-sacrifice and he’s pretty politically aware in your story.

3 bad qualities: Moth: she is so oblivious lol. She’s pretty good at reading people except where it comes to their impressions of her. She’s too trusting (way too trusting) and she needs to put herself first more often. Estarossa: COME ON DUDE STOP SULKING. Bearing grudges like that is not an attractive characteristic. He’s also hot headed and ridiculous. But I love him anyway.

favourite episode/etc: for Estarossa when the bonding ceremony happens. Finally getting to see him as the hero he can be was fantastic! For Moth the most recent chapters with her warrior training. I feel that’s brought out the best in her.

otp: each other of course!
