Robert Downey Jr. Criticized For his Use of Blackface in Tropic Thunder

Today Robert Downey Jr. faces criticism for a comedy part he played over a decade ago. The actor came under fire on Twitter from users who have discovered recently his involvement in the 2008 satire Tropic Thunder of Ben Stiller ... but did not seem to be doing their homework before condemning the movie. Tropic Thunder, written by Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen, is one of the most unforgettable comedies of the century so far for the way it raised its eyes to the more pretentious and shallow Hollywood denizens, as depicted by Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. in the film. The film focuses about making a Vietnam War film, with Downey Jr. portraying Kirk Lazarus, an Australian actor who is so dedicated to acting on Method that he gets "pigmentation alteration" operation to genuinely portray a Black soldier. Today, however, a Twitter mob that did not know Tropic Thunder's cynical tone rushed to accuse Downey Jr. of darkening his skin in the film deliberately and unironically. "Remember that when Robert Downey Jr. did the full blackface and no one said ANYTHING," one person tweeted, with others piling in to condemn Downey Jr. for the part and ask why he never apologized. The tweets of Tropic Thunder lovers, who praised Downey Jr. and reminded critics of the story behind the character he had played, were quickly backlashed. "I see that we are again at the wonderful time of the year when somebody here obviously does not understand the humor in Tropic Thunder, and now we all have to take some time out of our day to explain. Do not worry, we all will get through it together, "tweeted one person. Downey Jr. has previously supported that position, telling Joe Rogan why he wanted to play Kirk Lazarus on his podcast this year. Per IndieWire: "The insane self-involved hypocrisy of artists, and what they feel they are allowed to do at times, just my opinion, I to hold up to nature," he stated. "And 90 per cent of my Black friends were like, 'Dude, that was great.' I do not argue with (the other 10%), but I know where my heart lies...Tropic Thunder, in my defense, is about how wrong (blackface) is, and I take exception." Pfadfinder gegen Zombies

Autor Etan Cohen, von dem unter anderem die Drehbücher zu Tropic Thunder und Men in Black III stammen, soll für Paramount die Regie der Horrorkomödie Scouts vs. Zombies übernehmen, das meldet Heat Vision. In dem Film geht es um den Campingausflug zweier Pfadfindergruppen, der von plötzlich auftauchenden Zombies erheblich gestört wird. Nun müssen die Pfadfinderjungen die Mädchen retten, bevor die der nach Menschenfleisch gierenden Horde zum Opfer fallen.

Sollten die Verhandlungen zwischen Cohen und dem produzierenden Studio Paramount Pictures erfolgreich beendet werden, wäre dies seine erste Regiearbeit. Er wird ebenfalls die Neufassung des bereits 2010 entstandenen Drehbuchs überwachen.
