I completely agree with everything you've said about the redubs, they're blatantly dismissing the incredible work of the Canadian cast - the original English dubs are so close to my heart, even if I first saw the series in Japanese. I went through this new cast list and I found myself so disappointed. Matt did such an incredible job as Kira and I have that this new dub just won't have the same effect with a new actor. But also - what about the music? What about Lacus' dub? Its just not fair.
Agreed. I wish they’d at least give a Canadian dub option. I honestly can’t recall any major dialogue changes from the original to the remaster so I don’t understand the need for a redub at all. I can’t even picture any of the new cast in the roles they’ve been cast for. Johnny Yong Bosch as Dearka? Come on. His voice doesn’t fit at all, and he won’t have the cocky little arrogant drawl that Brad Swaile had. I LOVED Miriallia’s voice actor, her voice was pretty and made Miriallia sound smart and confident, yet compassionate. And man oh man do I ever love Matt Hill. Aside from Brad, Matt Hill and Sam Vincent were the voices of my childhood. Matt had Kira’s attitude down to a t, as well as Kira’s dorky side. The girl who does Lacus has such a unique voice, too. I literally can’t say a bad thing about the Canadian cast at all. They were perfect.
I’ve seen people say the redub will expose a whole new generation to Gundam SEED, but honestly, it’s 2017. It’s not like shows disappear into a void anymore. The show is online, and in DVD format for all to watch, both in Japanese and (Canadian) English. It aired both in Canada and the U.S. forever. The only thing I can even think of needing to be changed is the version that aired in the U.S. added lasers to the guns and I believe censored when the cyclops? system blew up Alaska and that was a U.S. thing - it didn’t happen up here and that was network animation, not voice acting.
I know I’m ranting (again) but I’m so heated over this. It legitimately feels like a personal slap in the face - there was legitimately no reason for a re-dub whatsoever. This is actually COSTING MONEY. This isn’t a money saving thing. This isn’t a smart business move and the remaster itself is already old so it’s not like they’re trying to capitalize on anything. There’s no new merch, nothing aside from DVD sales WHICH they could’ve done without a recast so I don’t get why this is being done.
This isn’t even like it’s a new season, new movie or a show currently airing like the whole Dragonball Z re-dub fiasco was, or the Cardcaptors movie. This is an older show they’re bringing back for what reason? This isn’t boosting sales anywhere. It’s just erasing quality voice work to put in a bunch of other actors who are known for doing the EXACT FREAKING SAME VOICE FOR EVERYTHING. When was the last time Johnny Yong Bosch used a different voice? Everytime he speaks it’s Ichigo.
What kills me, too, is the Canadian dollar is low right now. Typically that means positive things for the voice industry in Vancouver, but not so this time around. If you look at the IMDB for all the voice actors that worked in that show, they haven’t seen a lot of work since. It’s heartbreaking and disheartening.
