The Ethereum Merge Is Done, Opening a New Era for the Second-Biggest Blockchain

Shortly after the network achieved "terminal total difficulty" early on Thursday, Ethereum switched from proof of work to proof of stake. The Ethereum merging has now been completed successfully. The proof-of-stake switchover that the Ethereum network undertook at 2:45 am EST was a historic achievement that the cryptocurrency world had been waiting for more than five years. Both the creation of ETH and the validation of transactions on the Ethereum network have been fundamentally altered by the update. Before the integration, ETH was produced through "mining," an energy-intensive process in which users focused a lot of computer power on challenging challenges.
When mining Ethereum's main net reached "terminal total difficulty," the predefined threshold at which it became almost impossible, the network automatically started switching to a proof-of-stake consensus method. This is what caused the incident. The changeover proceeded well in those twelve minutes. After 12 minutes and 48 seconds, or two epochs (a period of 32 slots), the Ethereum network successfully reached finality, the crucial test to determine whether the merging had been successful. Only one block had been missing. Major cryptocurrency exchanges including Binance, FTX, Coinbase, and Kraken briefly halted trading for ETH and other tokens tied to Ethereum during that period as a precaution. Trading affected by Ethereum is anticipated to start up again soon on such sites. In the minutes that followed, Ethereum's core engineers celebrated the creation—the fruit of years of difficult testing and planning. The seamless implementation of the merging is a groundbreaking technological achievement that has been compared to replacing a rocket ship's engine in mid-flight.
Tens of billions of dollars worth of digital assets, applications, and decentralized finance (DeFi) systems are presently supported by the Ethereum network, and none of them appear to have been negatively impacted by the network's switch to proof of stake. Following the completion of the integration, the price of ETH fell by 0.4%.
