This past April I was invited by BLACK DIRT STUDIO head honcho Jason Meagher to take part in a new music recording project called NATCH. The idea of the project is to bring two different sounding bands/artists to collaborate on a few songs together. So for one full day and night I recorded four tracks with Brooklyn dream folk duo MIGHTY MOON. My pal and drummer Ethan Schmid came up to add his percussion and banjo skills.
Fans often ask me why I don't play more covers. Truth be told I just don't know many. But in true "folk" tradition the few covers I do know are usually my own adapted version of the song. Here we have my own warped take on Robert Johnson's immortal "Love in Vain". I've been playing this song for years in live sets. I feel like this version really captures the mood of the narrative. Possibly the most haunted of all versions.
"Memory Loss" is an instrumental that I composed during the sessions for my forthcoming album. It was written with lyrics in mind but for this version I thought it would be cool to experiment with the natural drone of the guitar pattern and the overtones that it creates on endless repeat. Be sure to check out the entire session on the NATCH tumblr page HERE You can also download the session from WFMU's Free Music Archive HERE. Don't forget to share the music!!!
