People give aesthetics blogging a lot of shit for being twee or vapid or done for attention, but you know what? I'm a very visually oriented person. I love art. I love tiny gestures and movements and shapes and the way light hits things. I think the artistic composition of a practice space or a beautiful tool or spell can hold great meaning and significance. I believe things can be messy and ugly and still hold beauty. My worldview is heavily shaped by stories, symbols, metaphors, and the arts. Collecting visual imagery helps me to compose my thoughts.

And actually I think dismissing people as being empty or thoughtless or meaningless because they make moodboards or want their altar to be pretty is in fact not the moral high ground that some people think it is. Especially because why do you assume that's the extent of what they do or think or believe? Why are people are so quick to accuse others of emptiness or falseness when they do share their practice, just because it's aesthetically pleasing?

I think irony poisoning and allergy to nuance and sincerity is far more of a problem of social media than someone posting pics they think are pretty. The person whose only goal is to make the hit count go up and the person who dismisses someone's interiority based on appearances are two sides of the same coin.

We can be thoughtful in our practice and apply critical thinking to our social media consumption without this kind of arrogance. Cringe culture will strip anything of meaning for you, when that's the only god you really believe in.

Not to be all love and light uwu, and I do think baneful magic has its uses and that people have a right to protect themselves against real harm, but sometimes the things I see people talking about casting curses on others for just tells me that the curseworker is not a safe person to be around.

The way I look at it, baneful magic can be the magical equivalent of a physical assault, yeah? I keep seeing people talking about cursing someone over a disagreement, or general dislike, or something that could be resolved with a conversation, like adults.

If you would physically hurt me, just because we disagree or don't like each other, then you're not someone I care to engage with full stop. I see no difference with baneful magic.

So if you are thinking about cursing someone, I believe it's important to sit with it for a while and think as diplomatically as possible about why you want to, and to try and be specific about what you want to happen to them. If baneful magic is about defending yourself and applying consequences, then you still have a responsibility to mind yourself. What did this person actually do, and is it worth violence towards them? Would it be justifiable for you to, say, punch them in the face for this? To cause serious or lasting harm, that may extend beyond them to their loved ones who have nothing to do with the situation? Or are you in fact being the aggressor here, just because you can get away with it, over something that is just not that serious?

I'm queer and I'm pagan. There have been more than enough restrictions placed on what people are allowed to say and do and believe over the past couple thousand years, and I refuse. Censorship is a tool of oppression, full-stop.

It's become very common to see people who probably mean well trying to argue that topics of sex, violence, and abuse should be censored and limited to protect people. Fear-mongering about "dangerous ideas" is the same thing that was argued in order to burn, destroy, and suppress books of magic, science, sexuality, feminism, anti-racism, history, and theology. The same texts that record or translated pagan traditions and narratives often reframed those traditions and stories from the perspectives of oppressive regimes.

Censorship is used to suppress the voices of the oppressed and abused, to silence and limit religious minorities, queer people, people of color, women, and the lower classes. When you argue that censorship is protecting people, you are arguing against autonomy, against people's ability to think for themselves and decide what is right for them.

Let me be clear: censorship does not protect anyone. Censorship is a call for silence, to suppress the ability to share knowledge and information. Censorship is the rhetoric of oppression and control — that is its only purpose.
