Who’s left in the World Cup - Part 1
Etrit Berisha of Albania - still in the World Cup - just
And then there were 68. Two years and six months of football has cut the number of teams capable of winning the World Cup from 211 to just 68. Mongolia was the first side eliminated, on 17 March 2015, giving them just four years to rebuild for an attempt at Qatar 2022.
Fifa, the god of football, has split the football world into six confederations. The remaining 68 are scattered around the confederations thus:
North and Central America and the Caribbean 6 South America 8 Africa 15 Europe 32 Asia 6 Oceania 1 First of all the 68 has to be cut to 32, who will contest the World Cup Finals in Russia in June and July 2018. This will be achieved by doing even more football - big fun! Starting on 5 October are six days of crucial Qualifying matches. Further Qualifiers follow in November and then the 32 will be known. So which of the 68 are likely to make it to Russia, to the last 32? Actually, some teams have already qualified. Russia, as host nation, and seven others. For the rest, qualification is in the balance.
Aleksandr Samedov of Russia - definitely in the last 32, and it feels sooo good
The following summarises where we are and what's going to happen. I reckon. CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean)
The 5th and final round of Qualifying in CONCACAF, with two games to play
Mexico have qualified. Costa Rica need one point from their two remaining games. Even if they don't get it, it would be extraordinary if they don't qualify. Trinidad and Tobago need a miracle so I'm going to discount them. Panama, the USA and Honduras are in a three way fight: come third and qualify for Russia, come fourth and enter a playoff, come fifth and the World Cup is at an end. Panama have never qualified for the World Cup Finals; the USA nearly always do. The two teams meet in Florida next. The winners, I think, will take third place - Honduras finish with two tough matches. I think the USA will win in Florida and then win in Trinidad to claim third place. And I think Panama will take 4th place and enter the playoff. Sadly for Honduras.
Roman Torres, Panama’s captain and back four pillar - plenty more football for him, very much so
