WORLD CUP 2022 QUALIFYING UPDATE
Europe and South America are quite rightly obsessed with Euro 2020 and Copa America at the moment, but June 2021 has also been a big month for World Cup Qualifying in Asia and CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean): 38 teams were eliminated from the World Cup, ranging from Montserrat (population 4,649), to India (population 1.3 billion).
211 teams (every team eligible) entered World Cup 2022: 74 have now been eliminated, leaving 137 teams still fighting.
AFRICA: 40 teams remain, competing for 5 Finals places.
Mo Salah scored both Egypt’s goals at Russia 2018.
ASIA: 13 teams remain, including the hosts, who qualify automatically for their Finals. The other 12 are aiming for one of four guaranteed places: fifth place brings an inter-continental playoff. Japan, South Korea, Iran and Australia are still going.
EUROPE: Qualifying has only just started, all 55 teams remain. There are 13 places available.
Manuel Locatelli and Virgil van Dijk. Both Italy and the Netherlands failed to qualify for Russia 2018, we missed them.
NORTH & CENTRAL AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN: 8 teams remain, including Mexico and USA, playing for one of three guaranteed places at the Finals. Fourth place produces an inter-continental playoff.
OCEANIA: Qualifying is yet to begin, so all 11 teams could still win the World Cup, including Tonga.
SOUTH AMERICA: A third of the Qualifying matches have been played, all 10 teams can still qualify.

Qualifying in all confederations (except Oceania) begins again in September 2021.
WORLD CUP 2022 QUALIFYING: ASIA
Round 2 has finally concluded, 21 months after it began, and it’s been epic. In June 2021, 20 more teams have been eliminated, in a frantic finale, leaving 12 teams to go forward to Round 3. They are:

Syria 🇸🇾 Not bad, considering the ongoing Civil War.
Syria: well done lads.
Australia 🇦🇺 8 wins out of 8.
Iran 🇮🇷 Were in real trouble before wins against Bahrain and Iraq.
Saudi Arabia🇸🇦 Won a decisive match with Uzbekistan 3-0.
Japan 🇯🇵 8 wins out of 8, goal difference +44, including a 14-0 win over Mongolia.
Yuya Osako of Japan scored three against Mongolia and five against Myanmar.
United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪 Beat Vietnam 3-2 on the final day to avoid elimination.
Ali Mabkhout of United Arab Emirates is the top scorer in all World Cup Qualifying with 11 goals.
South Korea 🇰🇷

These 12 teams will compete for four places at the 2022 Finals. The team that finishes fifth will enter an inter-continental playoff. Matches begin September 2021.

WORLD CUP QUALIFYING: CONCACAF
Round 2 in CONCACAF (North & Central America & the Caribbean) has ended. The six surviving teams from Round 1 were drawn into three ties, played home and away. The winners were:
Canada 🇨🇦, defeated Haiti 🇭🇹 4-0 on aggregate.
El Salvador 🇸🇻, defeated St Kitts & Nevis 🇰🇳 6-0.
David Rugamas of El Salvador is top scorer in CONCACAF qualifying with 8 goals, including two in the 4-0 first-leg win over St Kitts
Panama 🇵🇦, defeated Curaçao 🇨🇼 2-1.
So Canada, El Salvador and Panama go through to the final 8 team “Octagon”, where they will join top seeds Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico and USA, to decide who goes to the Finals. Top three will qualify, the team that finishes fourth will play an inter-continental playoff. Matches begin September 2021.

WORLD CUP 2022 QUALIFYING: SOUTH AMERICA
June 2021 saw two more match days: a third of the matches have now been played.
Two more matches, two more wins, two more goals. Business as usual for Neymar and Brazil.
An equaliser by Miguel Borja of Colombia in the fourth minute of injury time left Argentina with two draws from their two matches. He needs to work on his Superman impression.
Bolivia’s chances have revived with four points in their last two games. Marcelo Martins Moreno scored three times in those matches, and is now top scorer in South America with 6.
Qualifying resumes in September 2021.
WORLD CUP QUALIFYING: CONCACAF
April is the cruelest month, said T.S. Eliot in The Waste Land. Well T.S. never knew about June 2021 and World Cup Qualifying in the CONCACAF region (North & Central America & the Caribbean). It’s been savage: Round 1 has been concluded, and from the 30 teams that set off, just 6 teams survive and progress to Round 2.
The 6 Qualifiers won their respective Groups:
El Salvador 🇸🇻 Big congrats to Montserrat (population 4649) in this Group, who were unbeaten, and until recently, the lowest ranked team in the world.

Curaçao 🇨🇼 Managed by Patrick Kluivert.
Panama 🇵🇦
Anibal Godoy (#20) scored Panama’s first goal in their decisive 3-0 win over Dominican Republic.
Haiti 🇭🇹

They don’t hang around in CONCACAF. Round 2 begins almost immediately, and consists of home and away matches played on 12 and 15 June 2021.

The three winners go through to Round 3, where they join the big boys, Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico and USA. Round 3 begins September 2021.

Qualifying in South America returns in June 2021 with two rounds of matches.

WORLD CUP 2022 QUALIFYING: CONCACAF
June 2021 will be a brutal month in Qualifying in the CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean) region. Round 1 will conclude: only the 6 Group winners qualify for Round 2, but 21 teams can still qualify.
Antigua and Barbuda or El Salvador will probably qualify from Group A. Group B should be decided by Canada’s match with Suriname, and Curaçao-Guatemala should determine Group C. In Group D, Panama, who qualified for Russia 2018, will probably have to beat Dominican Republic to avoid elimination. In Group E, Haiti will probably need just a point against Nicaragua. St Kitts & Nevis are favourites in Group F, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago.

Round 2 will be played on 12 and 15 June: the six qualifiers from Round 1 will be reduced to three. The three survivors go through to the final Round 3, to begin September 2021, where they will be joined by Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico and USA.
Andrés Guardado is the captain of Mexico, with 166 caps, and has played in the last four World Cups. Mexico has been eliminated at the Round of 16 at the last seven Finals.

WORLD CUP 2022 QUALIFYING: ASIA
World Cup Qualifying returns in June 2021. Yay!
Round 2 will finally conclude in June 2021, having started in September 2019. There will be carnage: there are only 11 places left in Round 3 (Japan have already qualified) and 33 teams still capable of qualifying. Syria and (sigh) Qatar (who are guaranteed a place at their wretched Finals anyway) look almost certain to make it. Australia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and South Korea head their Groups.
Sardar Azmoun of Iran. Iran qualified for the last two Finals, and are the highest ranked team in Asia, but are really struggling to qualify for Round 3. Their situation isn’t helped by the decision to play all Group C’s remaining fixtures in Bahrain, above Iran in the table.
Son Heung-Min has scored 26 goals in 89 matches. South Korea have appeared at the last nine Finals, but things weren’t going well in Group H, until two recent pieces of luck: 1. they were chosen to host all remaining fixtures and 2. North Korea, their biggest rival, withdrew from the Group, which also meant Turkmenistan lost the 3 points they had gained for beating them. South Korea are looking good now.

WORLD CUP 2022 QUALIFYING (CONCACAF)
Qualifying has started in North and Central America and the Caribbean in the traditional fashion, with Round 1.
30 teams have been placed in 6 Groups: only the 6 Group winners go through to Round 2.
9 teams have already been eliminated. The leading contenders for a place in Round 2 are:
In Group A (easily the tightest Group): Antigua & Barbuda 🇦🇬 and El Salvador 🇸🇻 (twice qualified for the Finals), Grenada 🇬🇩 and Montserrat 🇲🇸 have chances.
In Group B: Canada 🇨🇦 (qualified for the Finals in 1986) and Suriname 🇸🇷 (with a combined goal difference of +25 from four matches).
In Group C: Curaçao 🇨🇼 and Guatemala 🇬🇹, having eliminated Cuba 🇨🇺 with narrow wins.
In Group D: Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 and Panama 🇵🇦 (Russia 2018 Qualifiers).
In Group E: Nicaragua 🇳🇮 or Haiti 🇭🇹 (qualified for the Finals in 1974).
In Group F: St Kitts & Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago 🇹🇹 (qualified for the Finals in 2006), possibly Guyana 🇬🇾.
Round 1 concludes in June 2021. The six Group winners are reduced to three in Round 2. These three teams join USA 🇺🇸 Mexico 🇲🇽 Costa Rica 🇨🇷 Honduras 🇭🇳 and Jamaica 🇯🇲 in Round 3.

WORLD CUP QUALIFYING (EUROPE)
The third round of matches, 30/31 March 2021.
Aleksandar Mitrovic scored two excellent goals for Serbia in their 2-1 win over Azerbaijan, and is now leading scorer in European Qualifying with 5 goals. Serbia are level on points with Portugal at the top of Group A.
Memphis Depay. Gibraltar 0 Netherlands 7: why is a team ranked 14 playing a team ranked 195? Money, presumably. There should be a Qualifying Round for lower ranked teams, as in other confederations. The Netherlands’ win means they are level on points at the top of Group G.
Armenia have got it going on, 3 wins from 3 after a 3-2 win over Romania, who led 2-1 before George Puscas was sent off. Varazdat Haroyan makes it 2-2 with 3 minutes left.
Best goal so far in European Qualifying was scored by Besar Halimi of Kosovo in their 3-1 defeat to Spain. First, winning the ball off Spanish keeper Unai Simón, who had gone for a wander, then scoring from 40 metres.
North Macedonia inflicted Germany’s first home defeat in a home World Cup Qualifying match since 2001. Timo Werner, in poor form for Chelsea, missed a sitter. It’s hard not to feel sorry for him. Germany are third in Group J, 3 points behind leaders Armenia.
Stefano Sensi scored Italy’s first goal, against Lithuania, two minutes after coming on as a sub. Italy recorded their third 2-0 win.
World Champs France won 1-0 in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Antoine Griezmann celebrated his goal with a moment of calm reflection. France lead Group D by 4 points.

FRANCE: the champions dropped points at home to Ukraine
CROATIA: lost their first match in Slovenia
BELGIUM: semifinalists and FIFA ranked number 1 dropped points against the Czech Republic
ENGLAND: the other semifinalists have won both matches. Deep joy. Well done boys 👍
GERMANY: after a terrible Russia 2018, they have started with two wins

ITALY: failed to qualify for Russia 2018 and much missed, they now have two wins
NETHERLANDS: also failed to qualify etc, lost to Turkey in their first match.

SPAIN: were a goalkeeping mistake away from starting with two draws, but have 4 points
Dani Olmo scored an injury time winner for Spain against Georgia: the keeper should have saved it.
PORTUGAL: have 4 points, but should have 6....
Serbia 2 Portugal 2: Portugal were denied an injury time winner by two injury time goal line clearances by Stefan Mitrovic. The first of these looked to be over the line: Cristiano definitely thought so. He threatened to remove his shorts in protest, but settled on the armband.

Irish goalkeeper (and debutant) Gavin Bazunu keeps out a shot by Luxembourg’s Gerson Rodrigues. 5 minutes from the end, though, Rodrigues scored the winner, to give Luxembourg just their 6th ever win in a World Cup Qualifier.
