Known Associates | Jack & Etta

Jack sat in the late model sedan flipping through the file folder. Terrance 'Trey' Walker was a thorn in Jack's side. Honestly, he could not figure out why the courts had decided to parole the guy to begin with. He had enough criminal offenses to kill a small forest if printed. The mother said she didn't know, the last three girlfriends hadn't seen him either; Jack needed now to follow up with his other known associates. One of Trey's charges was a misdemeanor offense of carrying weed without a medicinal license. He'd claimed in court that he was given the weed as a gift from some musician and that he didn't know the guy's name, just the name of the band.

Blotter. That was all Jack had to go on. They were easy enough to find, the problem was there were four band members and the first three said they had no idea who Trey Walker was. Riva, the only women in the band scoffed stating she does not know the name of all her fans. Miles, the drummer said outside of gigs he never hung out with the band. Ezra, one of the singers was very nice but also a dead end saying he was not really into paling around with people who came to see him perform. He loved being a musician but wanted a private life as well. The only other member was Johnnie Fiske. All the flyers for the band had him listed as Johnnie but all the members of the band called him Bud. Jack had to wonder if that was the lead he needed. Was he Bud because he was everyone's friend or because he sold it?

Double checking the numbers on the house, he stepped out of the vehicle and put on the department issued windbreaker that read PAROLE OFFICER in bold yellow lettering across the back. Adjusting the badge over his front left pocket and unsnapping the holster just in case, Jack walked on to the porch of the small house and knocked. He was hoping Johnnie Fiske would answer but when the door swung open a captivating redhead with eyes like sapphires stood there with a meek smile on her face. "Pardon me, Miss, I am looking for a Johnnie Fiske. Is this his place of residence?"

Play a song tonight

The ice cube in Theo's glass was starting to melt. He'd nursed this drink a little too long but was still debating if he wanted another. Work was never the issue but he felt ridiculous that his mood and the tone for the evening was being decided by his mother. Theodore Durrant was not only a grown man, but the eldest of two boys and yet at nearly fifty that woman still found a way to crawl under his skin. It was enough for Tristan to leave town and go stay with his sister.

Theo hated when they fought. Tristan just wanted Theo to tell his parents the truth. His brother Ian knew, and was quite happy for them. Hed thought over the years that perhaps she'd figure it out, that hed never have to speak the words 'I'm gay' but damn it if Rowena Durrant wasnt going to fight him till her death about the whole thing. Always with the comments about grandchildren. He and Tristan talked about maybe adopting one day but times like this, when they fought? Theo had to wonder somedays if they'd last that long. Not because of his lover. No, because he knew he was too weak to just come out of the closet. What would it do to his reputation? The reputation of the paper? And would it send Rowena to an early grave?

He liked coming to The Piano Bar when he was feeling melancholy. Most nights the pianists were so-so but the young woman performing tonight was always radiant. He wished he could play as fluid as she but watching her was the next best thing. It was mesmerizing. His lip curled in disgust with himself that he was hurting Tristan. Liquid courage wasn’t what he needed. When the song ended, the woman stood and he stood in turn and walked closer to the piano. “I’m sorry, Miss, I know you’re taking a break but I was wondering. When you come back do you think you can play a specific song? I mean, do you take requests?” He paused, knowing this was one of Tristan’s favorite pieces. “If you know it, it’s called Gaspard de la Nuit by Ravel?"

Glass Lake Asylum: Nurse

Despite never being overly sensitive or a sympathetic person Etta found herself drawn to the nursing profession. Really two things attracted her to the position: power over others and that she could support herself without having to rely on a man. Fresh out of school she worked her way through several hospitals eventually growing bored with each until she found Glass Lake.  Finally, where the majority of the patients were too sick to be believed she could play out the power dominance she so intensely craved. Etta continues to find the most fulfillment in life from her work at the asylum.

When Luke and Andy announced the charity event Etta beamed with pride that they were wanting to showcase the students talents, and even more so when she found out that the new music program would be the focus. She felt honored and immediately set to task to pull together a program that included any child that took interest. In a matter of weeks she assembled a small choir, and picked songs that where universally known, and also had an overall uplifting message.

Etta walked up to the small assembly of children, and while everyone pretty much had their placement correct she did have to switch out Hunter and Jaden. Leaning into them she smiled wide and gave her last words of encouragement. “You guys just remember to sing from here,” and placed her hand over her heart before she added, “and have fun. It’s all that really matters.”  She nodded and applauded them even before their performance. Turning back to the audience she stepped forward and provided a very brief introduction in front of the piano. 

“Hello Everyone, we all just wanted to thank you for joining us here on this perfect night. Music is something that encourages and feeds the soul, and serves as such a powerful conduit bringing people together.When I explained to the kids this event would be taking place we had a brief discussion, and it was decided we would have a volunteer chorus. I’m pleased to say all participants in the music after school program raised their hands. Ladies and Gentleman without further ado I give to you the Boys and Girls Club choir, and their first ever performance. For our first piece we are pleased to present Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey.” She turned taking her seat at the piano, and began to play.
