It had only been three days since arriving at the shelter. The whole thing was strangeâ leaving this perception of altered reality. She was finally away from Caleb and his house of horrors. There were times when she felt like could finally breathe without being critiqued but every once a while she slipped back into hyper-awareness as the smallest noise would make her jump out of her skin. One of the catches about the shelter was required counseling. It seemed a small price to pay, but Etta was beyond hesitant. Given her ex-abuser had once been her therapist until lines were crossed and they turned into something more. Still, she had no regrets pulling that flyer down in a dodgy diner just outside Pensacolaâit felt like divine intervention.
Looking over at the community room she eased off the couch and walked down the hall stopping at Mr. Rollins door before gently knocking. Honestly, she hoped he wouldnât answer and she could go back to reading a book. The door opened at her eyes fell to his feet immediately. Bruises still marred her face which was why she kept her distance from mirrors for the last several days with the exception upon dressing for the day. Uttering a soft-spoken greeting entering the room, âHello.â Stil in an insurmountable amount of pain she eased down slowly on the chair. The staff kept asking if sheâd like to go to the hospital but she refused. The only insurance coverage she had was Calebâs and the last thing she wanted was him to know where she was.Â
The last meeting with the therapist was awkward and he was left to do most of the talking. Etta clammed up but wanted to make an effort to try and get something out today. Letting her eyes drift to his desk she tried to excuse her behavior from their previous visit. âIâm sorry. Itâs nothing against you...itâs just that my ex-fianceâthe man Iâm running from was my therapist at one point.â Unknowingly her hands balled into tight fists before she went on; still unable to look the man in the eye. âSo sitting here with you makes me feel not safe.âÂ
Known Associates | Jack & Etta
Jack sat in the late model sedan flipping through the file folder. Terrance âTreyâ Walker was a thorn in Jackâs side. Honestly, he could not figure out why the courts had decided to parole the guy to begin with. He had enough criminal offenses to kill a small forest if printed. The mother said she didnât know, the last three girlfriends hadnât seen him either; Jack needed now to follow up with his other known associates. One of Treyâs charges was a misdemeanor offense of carrying weed without a medicinal license. Heâd claimed in court that he was given the weed as a gift from some musician and that he didnât know the guyâs name, just the name of the band.
Blotter. That was all Jack had to go on. They were easy enough to find, the problem was there were four band members and the first three said they had no idea who Trey Walker was. Riva, the only women in the band scoffed stating she does not know the name of all her fans. Miles, the drummer said outside of gigs he never hung out with the band. Ezra, one of the singers was very nice but also a dead end saying he was not really into paling around with people who came to see him perform. He loved being a musician but wanted a private life as well. The only other member was Johnnie Fiske. All the flyers for the band had him listed as Johnnie but all the members of the band called him Bud. Jack had to wonder if that was the lead he needed. Was he Bud because he was everyoneâs friend or because he sold it?
Double checking the numbers on the house, he stepped out of the vehicle and put on the department issued windbreaker that read PAROLE OFFICER in bold yellow lettering across the back. Adjusting the badge over his front left pocket and unsnapping the holster just in case, Jack walked on to the porch of the small house and knocked. He was hoping Johnnie Fiske would answer but when the door swung open a captivating redhead with eyes like sapphires stood there with a meek smile on her face. âPardon me, Miss, I am looking for a Johnnie Fiske. Is this his place of residence?â

Slightly bored after finishing up vacuuming Etta began to paint her nails a soft pastel pink. Johhnyâs amazing sound system played softly in the background and while it usually had heart-thumping rock blasting through the speakers Etta preferred the company of Ludovico Einaudi. Pulling out a top coat sheâd given it a proper shake when she heard a knock at the door. The normalcy of the day suddenly stopped at the thought that someone she didnât wish to see may very well be standing within several feet. Looking down at her cell she knew it would be a bit before her brother was home and her shoulders slumped. At the very least she was going to have to look and walked over to the window above the couch and carefully pulled the curtain back. A rather tall man stood outside the door and with some sort of badge and Etta became nervous. Did Caleb file a missing personsâ report clutching the curtain she froze on the spot?
Something must have caught the manâs attention for he turned and she thankfully caught the bright lettering across his back. Breathing a sigh of relief she backed away careful the newly painted fingers and toenails. Parole officers donât concern themselves with missing people unless they have a record. Making her way to the door she unlatched the lock and pulled it open before offering a friendly smile to the man. At the mention of her brother her brow furrowed. Wait...was he in some sort of trouble? Gripping onto the edge of the door until her knuckles whitened a concern took over her features as she bit at the edge of her bottom lip. Suddenly, she regretted opening the door. âYes, this is his home.â Looking over her shoulder before turning back to the officer. âHeâs not here right now...Iâm not entirely sure when he will be.âÂ
Music played softly in the background as the rain began to pelt down suddenly. The skies had been gray and threatening all morning and the timing of it all couldn't have been worse. Feeling bad since there was no awning she opened the door in an invitation, âPlease come in...â After the screen door closed and he stepped in she was able to appreciate his stature as he all but blocked out the doorway. Keeping a respectable distance she introduced herself, âIâm his sister Etta. Is he in some sort of trouble?âÂ

The end of innocence || Etta x Delilah
So this was the day they´d all been waiting for. End to all the training, the lessons, mannerisms and thoughts inoculated, the constant observation, the sparse praise for obedience and the abundant punishment for failure. It was a strict place, sometimes, but it was the home they knew, a treatment they were used to enduring and not questioning, much easier because they had each other. The day marked with a massive red X in their calendars to remind each girl of its inevitability and importance. All the pain and biding would pay off now, as their adoptive parents had declared, as this day would denote a start into a new life for them. What exactly that meant they´d never quite gone into detail about but the weight and the ceremoniousness in their voices didn´t leave a single doubt.Â
Prim and proper as ever, the two young women, just grown out of their kid´s shoes and having entered adulthood at a vastly celebrated 18th birthday, sat together in the living room of the lavish three-story house, waiting where Harold and Elvira Griffin â their quasi-parents, teachers and  guides â had instructed them to. A strange sort of excitement bubbled in Delilah´s stomach that clearly showed in her dilated pupils and the flush on her cheeks, her cold hand tightly tucked into her sister-in-spirit´s, Etta. âI cannot believe today´s the day,â the girl murmured, free hand twirling a long soft lock of red. She looked down at their not similar but matching ivory dresses and the shiny patent-leather shoes, liking how they appeared more like sisters than ever before and leaned her head on the other´s shoulder. âI´m so nervous I couldnât sleep a single minute.â Her head lifted in sudden concern as she looked at Etta. âDo I look tired? Oh no⌠I cannot look tired, today of all days.â It was of utmost relevance to look their absolute best, as they´d been told during those last months of diet, skin treatments and working out.

The young redhead had difficulty rising from bed as the day sheâd been dreading was finally upon them. Granted, the last several years of training had all led to this moment but the thought of being separated from her sister left a hole in her heart. Always a sensitive and shy girl she relied on Eleanor for so many things and losing her anchor was nothing to celebrate. Slowly she dressed and prepared herself with all the excitement of going to a funeral before heading downstairs to the lavishly decorated living room. Seeing her sister there formed a lump in the throat; unsure if she was prepared to leave everything sheâd ever known. While there was a general excitement swirling around her naturally vivacious sister, she paled in comparison. Nodding gently in agreement before leaning in as she wished not to be overheard, âNot a wink either.â Etta pressed her chin to her sister's forehead before offering a quick kiss to others alabaster skin. Doing her best to try to share the sister enthusiasm she smiled, âYou look pretty as a picture...always.âÂ
Etta reached over and filled up a cup with tea before adding one sugar and smidge of cream. Anything else would be gluttonous or so she was told. Letting her eyes take in the room she made sure the staff was not in earshot when she asked, âAre you happy to leave me? Are you not even the slightest bit scared?â Eleanor had always been the braver of the two. Leaving her cup to the side she prepared some tea to her sisterâs liking. Offering the tea she tilted her head, âIâm not sure Iâm going to be able to do this without you.âÂ

Hey-a,Â
Iâm laying low today. Overdid it a bit yesterday with my marathon cleaning and paid for it when my feet swelled up last night(that was fun). The only thing on the itinerary today is making banana bread and trying to catch up on drafts.
Needless to say, Iâll be around for plotting and what not.Â
Happy Writing!!

Head Canon: Fashion
In the main verse, Etta always wears flats courtesy of her ex-fiance Caleb. They were the same height and at one point he threw out all her heels. He would regularly ridicule her about her ghastly height of 5â˛10 and how unfeminine it was. In the end, he created a complex.Â
Play a song tonight
The ice cube in Theoâs glass was starting to melt. Heâd nursed this drink a little too long but was still debating if he wanted another. Work was never the issue but he felt ridiculous that his mood and the tone for the evening was being decided by his mother. Theodore Durrant was not only a grown man, but the eldest of two boys and yet at nearly fifty that woman still found a way to crawl under his skin. It was enough for Tristan to leave town and go stay with his sister.
Theo hated when they fought. Tristan just wanted Theo to tell his parents the truth. His brother Ian knew, and was quite happy for them. Hed thought over the years that perhaps sheâd figure it out, that hed never have to speak the words âIâm gayâ but damn it if Rowena Durrant wasnt going to fight him till her death about the whole thing. Always with the comments about grandchildren. He and Tristan talked about maybe adopting one day but times like this, when they fought? Theo had to wonder somedays if theyâd last that long. Not because of his lover. No, because he knew he was too weak to just come out of the closet. What would it do to his reputation? The reputation of the paper? And would it send Rowena to an early grave?
He liked coming to The Piano Bar when he was feeling melancholy. Most nights the pianists were so-so but the young woman performing tonight was always radiant. He wished he could play as fluid as she but watching her was the next best thing. It was mesmerizing. His lip curled in disgust with himself that he was hurting Tristan. Liquid courage wasnât what he needed. When the song ended, the woman stood and he stood in turn and walked closer to the piano. âIâm sorry, Miss, I know youâre taking a break but I was wondering. When you come back do you think you can play a specific song? I mean, do you take requests?â He paused, knowing this was one of Tristanâs favorite pieces. âIf you know it, itâs called Gaspard de la Nuit by Ravel?â

While her brother had she reassured Etta that rent wasnât needed she wanted to give him something. After all, heâd offered a safe place to stay while she tried to forge a new life from the ashes of the former. The last thing she wanted was to wear out her welcome so when sheâd seen the help wanted ad for The Piano Bar she called and spent the rest of the day fretting about the interview. Despite the scholastic achievements sheâd never held a job; thus never been on a true interview. It was something Caleb thought would take her away from the house too much and prior to graduation persuaded her to stay home. All the worry and fret was for nothing as the shy woman relied on talent and was asked to start the position immediately.Â
Wearing a simple floral cream dress with a lavender sweater she sat on the small bench. The flats periodically pushing down a pedal her mind drifted a bit. Sheâd been at the bar for several weeks and while the job was easy enough it wasnât incredibly fulfilling. More times than not she provided background soundtrack to the patrons' conversation and was all but ignored. Not that she minded fading into the background but music was something that tended to bring others together. The disparity made her a bit sad. Midway through the second piece, she noticed the man. Always well dressed and attentive Etta looked forward to seeing him out there. It was as if she was connecting with someone even if it was in her own mind. Offering a soft smile of acknowledgment she looked at him before turning back to the piano as her nimble fingers danced across the keys.Â
Finishing up the piece she stood ready to take a break in the set when he approached, He was considerably taller than originally thought. Feeling suddenly nervous she lowered her eyes and grasped her hands together. When he spoke she kept her gaze lowered to the ground until the mention of a request. Finally, finding some esteem she looked up at his soft brown eyes and nodded, âI do take request.â In all her time at the bar no had ever requested anything so this was a new turn of events. At the mention of the song she smiled gently and tilted her head, âSuch a beautiful piece. I hope I can do it justice.â Deciding she didnât want him to wait or leave she took a step back towards the piano and explained, âIâll play for you now and then take my break.â Sitting back at the bench. The song was lovely and had this almost transitional magical quality about it. It wasnât for an amateur. Etta played for the man if he was the only one in the room and would periodically look up to gauge how she was doing. At the end of the song, she dropped her head for a momentâ feeling a satisfaction of sorts. Standing up she bowed to the man before making her way over the bar and sat down on the stool before ordering a club soda and lime.Â
