[ letters to you | rebekah ]
For a man who could talk himself out of hell, I've certainly found myself at a loss for words. But there are things I need to say that I couldn't bring myself to the last I saw you on that godforsaken backroad.
You'll have to forgive me for keeping my thoughts to myself but keeping to a strict business regimen the night I handed my daughter to you was for the best. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my thousand years and somehow I know you understand that, sister. Just as I understand and know you will give her everything I cannot at the current; everything I failed to provide her.
It pains me, Rebekah. All I ever wanted was to give her a world where she never had to fear the way I did and though I was never deluded enough to believe it'd be peaceful, never did I think I would have been bested the way I was. Giving Hope to you was the right thing to do for her but that doesn't keep me from wishing the situation were different. There are no words that could adequately describe how I miss her which is strange considering I had her for less than forty-eight hours. I reckon that's what fatherhood does to one.
Still, Hope is hardly the only one I miss. Your presence has been sorely missed, little sister. It was another necessary evil as we both needed the space to process what had happened betwixt us but your departure was what jumpstarted my desire to stake my permanent claim on New Orleans with both the Crescent wolves and, eventually, the remnants of my true father's pack. I do not blame you for my downfall. My arrogance and the shade it pulls over my eyes is mine and mine alone. I realize that now. But as the bastard son who knew only a handful of things to be true his entire life, it's very possible I was always aware of yet simply dismissed it as another lie. Regardless, I'm now paying the price as you care for and raise my daughter in mine and Hayley's stead.
I do find it sickly ironic that your happiness comes as a result of my failure to provide for my child but do not doubt for a second that I do not wish you happiness. I do. I wish you the very best. If I could only apologize for all I've done to you, I would but I don't think even another millennia spent in repentance would be enough. It may be difficult for you but I do ask you to remember, I soley thought my misguided intentions were the only option I had to keep you safe from Mikael and his never-ending vendetta against myself and the abhorrent sin and weakness I represented to him. I can live with myself knowing that you despised me for my actions but I would never have been able to live with myself had you been caught in the crossfire of my war with Mikael. And, before you say anything, I know you swore 'Always and forever' but Mikael's problems were with me and me alone.
From time to time, I've caught myself wondering what life would have been like for you and Elijah had I simply given in and let Mikael rid the world of me. And just as often, I've found myself wishing I wasn't so selfish in my endeavor to stay alive to spite our father if only it would have resulted in your happiness. I once told Marcellus I was your constant but never have I told a larger lie. You were right when you told me it was always you, Rebekah. You were and will always remain my constant, not the other way around, which is why I could never let myself be selfless in regards to you, little sister.
I think now of the future-- of cleansing New Orleans of my enemies and vanquishing any unforeseen threats housed here, of Hope's return. But I also think of your return as well. That is if finding it in your heart to forgive even a fraction of my wrongdoings where you are concerned so you'd like to return to us. After all, sister, New Orleans is our family home and I'd very much like you to be a part of it.
