EU VAT Update
I thought I might update on how the EU VAT change has affected me and digital comics sales of The Pride.
Anyone who’s been following for a while probably recalls how I said quite a lot leading up to the new year that the EU VAT change was hugely damaging for small business and small creators like myself, and it would drastically limit our reach, as our options are either to stop selling, or stop selling to Europe.
I took the latter option, so I could at least keep digital comics available from The Pride Store to the rest of the world, and within the UK.
However, even with them still open that way, I have noticed a drastic fall in sales of the digital comics from my own store.
I personally believe this is because the EU VAT changes, which have caused me to have to advise with where to buy depending on where you live, have confused customers, even if they are not in the EU.
Thankfully, there are two rays of hope in this: our Comixology sales have in fact continued to increase in this time, in part due to EU buyers HAVING to get from this third party marketplace, in part because many more people find it easier to use and lastly, because of the incredible amount of support Comixology have given me and The Pride (Comixology in fact recently included The Pride in their recommendations at SXSW festival).
The other ray of hope? Already, the commission behind the EU VAT changes have announced the changes will be put under review...just months after coming into effect. They have already said that if they find that it has caused massive damage, then they could be looking at options...
...so maybe, I’ll be able to sell digital comics direct to the EU market again. I am crossing my fingers.
At any rate, it is worth noting that these things only affect digital comics, and physical copies of The Pride can be sold to absolutely anywhere in the world with no issues (and I will ship ANYWHERE, so seriously, wherever you are, you can get The Pride from The Pride Store).
