Hi! are you a student at the New School? I'm thinking about applying next year, but don't know if it is the right choice for me. Can you tell me a little bit about the school, the social life or the students? Anything will help really. Thank you so much.
Hi! I graduated in 2015 from Lang with a major in Lit Studies Writing.
I really really enjoyed TNS as a whole. I made some incredible friends and really got the chance to take classes that challenged me and that were wildly more interesting than most classes that my friends who went to other schools were taking. Like, I legit took a class called “Cooking, Culture, and Cannibalism” which was one of the best classes I’ve probably ever taken. The school is not perfect by any means, there are many things that I disagree with including the ridiculous attendance policy. With that being said, I went through something really traumatic during my time at TNS and the professors were really understanding even with the ridiculous attendance policy. They gave me a lot of time and I appreciate them so much for that.
That being said, though, I really loved my time at The New School. There are no sororities or anything but the classes are super small so it’s very easy to make friends. You tend to befriend the people in your class often. The class sizes are usually like between 10-20 people in a class which I loved because it gives everyone a chance to speak their mind and sometimes you get into really interesting debates. The professors are extremely talented and many have written books or done impressive things in their fields. They also tend to be very understanding. The students can be hit or miss, some people are not the best but I think that’s with any college tbh. I made friends there that I know will be my friends forever. Especially in the writing community. We all still talk about books and writing and it’s just really great.
My suggestion is to do a tour of the school and then apply. If you get in, go to Accepted Students day. I was on the fence when I got in between TNS and another school but the Accepted Students Day made me fall madly in love with the people and the school so I knew I would be going there. TNS is not for everyone but I’d definitely suggest doing your research, going on a tour, and if you get in, definitely go to the event I just mentioned because you’ll really get a feel for the people who will be in your class!
Good luck and let me know if you need anything else. I hope this was helpful xoxo
