Bored, Eun-hyuk walks through the halls of the green building, watching how the residents interact with each other. There’s a small, barely noticeable smile on his face as he thinks back to his sister’s little "between-the-lines" proposal to Hyun-su.
As he crosses the hall, his eyes land directly on your figure, sitting absentmindedly. Beautiful. He can't help but think it. He stands there for a moment, arms crossed, quietly observing every little detail. The pencil in your hand, tracing perfect lines in the notebook on your lap, your foot tapping quickly to the music playing through your headphones, and even the way you keep tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear without realizing.
To anyone else, it would just seem like a cute, ordinary scene. But Eun-hyuk knows you. He loves you. Which means, of course, that he knows you very well — and he can tell something’s wrong. You’re nervous, anxious — worried, to say the least. You always do that when you’re worried, nervous, or even scared. Art always caught his attention, and from Eun-hyuk's point of view, he thought it was an interesting way for you to escape. But even so, his concern doesn’t fade.
He’s been noticing how restless and distant you’ve been for a while now. He’s often distant too because of his role as the group leader, so it’s normal for him not to see you sometimes. But oddly enough, you hadn’t come to see him, which honestly worried him. He figured maybe you just didn’t want to bother him — something very typical for you, since you always tried to give him space when you thought he needed it.
He slowly and silently walks toward you. He watches carefully as your fingers nervously scratch the edge of the notebook. Your head hangs low as you hum softly, trying to focus on the music — anything but your problems.
Sitting next to you, Eun-hyuk gently removes one of your headphones, making you flinch slightly from the sudden movement. You sigh when you realize it’s him, forcing the biggest smile you can manage — though it’s not much.
“Oppa! How are you?”
Just by looking into your eyes, he can see clearly that something’s not right. Instead of answering, he simply smiles, taking your hand and gently pulling the pencil from your fingers, resting it on the notebook.
“How are you? I haven’t heard from you lately. I was worried.”
“I’m fine, don’t worry.”
A lie. And he knows it. You can lie pretty well, but not to Eun-hyuk. His heart aches as he realizes you’re not going to tell him anything — probably trying to keep him from worrying.
“Something happened, didn’t it? You’re restless. And you always do this — listening to music like this when you’re nervous or sad. You can tell me, y/n. It’s okay.”
You look at him with uncertain eyes, hesitating whether you should talk or not. Leaning back against the wall, you sigh and stare up at the ceiling.
“It’s something silly, Eun-hyuk.”
“But it’s still something. Tell me.”
“It’s just… today was supposed to be my test. The most important one of the semester. The test I spent weeks studying for because I wanted something for my future, but with all this monster situation, I wonder if there’s even going to be a future.”
You let out a sad little laugh. You hadn’t wanted to tell him because it felt silly, but only you knew how much it actually meant. A foreigner who left her family behind to make them proud, to become the most accomplished one in the family, to bring the life you always dreamed of. Only you knew how hard you and your parents worked for you to be here.
“I know it sounds stupid, but… I’ve been waiting for this since I was 14. I worked hard, studied, even worked jobs for it. And in the end, it feels like it was all for nothing.”
A silent tear rolls down your cheek.
“Sorry… it’s stupid, I know.”
“No… it’s not stupid.”
He gently pulls you to sit between his legs, leaning you back against his chest. He wraps his arms around you, resting his chin on top of your head, and presses a soft kiss there.
“I know how important this is for you, and I understand better than anyone what it’s like to have to drop out of school for something bigger.”
“But the worst part is that I won’t be able to keep our promise.”
The promise. He remembers it so clearly.
You were in your small apartment, studying together one afternoon. Eun-hyuk was sitting in your swivel chair while you sat on the bed, leaning against the wall. You let out a sigh, dropping the book onto the bed with a quiet groan.
“Oppa! Why is studying so tiring?”
He turned his chair toward you, looking into your eyes with a small smile. He adjusted his glasses and got up to sit beside you. You intertwined your fingers with his, gazing at him in admiration.
“You know what? When all this studying, tests, and practice exams are over, I’m going to marry you,” you suddenly said, catching him off guard.
“Marry?” he asked, a little panicked by your sudden declaration.
“Of course, silly! Or would you rather I marry some random college freshman?”
“What? No, no! Of course not… I’ll marry you.”
“Then…” you hooked your pinkies together, locking your thumbs like a seal.
“…it’s a promise.”
He loves that memory, but it’s become sadder and heavier as time passed and their situation became more complicated. You bite your bottom lip, remembering all the effort you put into finishing college. Now it all feels like it’s falling apart.
“Don’t think like that. The world could fall apart, but that’s no reason for us to fall apart too. I love you. It’s hard, yeah, but if we’re together, we’ll get through it. Together. No matter what.”
You stay quiet, letting his words sink in. You couldn’t disagree — he really is your everything, and you couldn’t let the situation take away your hope for the future. He knows things might never fully get better, but he loves you. Deeply. And he wants to face it all with you.
“…Thank you, Eun-hyuk. I don’t know what I’d do without you. I love you so much, and more than ever, I want to be with you until the very end.”
“I love you too. And I’ll make it happen. I’ll keep the promise, my love. Don’t worry."
