When Baekhyun was still in high school, he'd taken a Photography course-- it was only to get his fine arts credits out of the way (for some reason, Music courses didn't count)-- but they'd learned and dabbled briefly in the mechanics of cameras, both learning how to use them and how to put them together, this much he remembers. He knows Yifan had mentioned it fleetingly in a bout of anger, that one of his cameras had been broken, but he'd never given much thought to it (not how it came to be broken, nor what he'd do with it) until he'd wandered into the study one day, patting around in search of his jacket when he'd instead found the shattered remains of what he was almost sure was said camera. Normally he'd just leave it, but there was a quite unpleasant feeling twisting in his stomach uncomfortably, something that was just not quite right, and he picked up the pieces carefully, meticulously (they turned out to be larger and easier to handle than he'd originally thought) and slowly but surely, began to piece it back together while the other man is out at his piano lesson. Really, Baekhyun wasn't even sure if this was turning out right-- something told him it must be a lot easier to do with actual sight-- but he can only cross his fingers, hope for the best.
He's not silly-- he knows that it won't ever quite work again and that his creation will turn out deformed at best, some pieces missing and some where they shouldn't be, edges jutting out. But he also knows that it was one of Yifan's favorites, that it had been important to him so what good is it to toss it away, or leave it there in pieces? It takes him a few hours and a couple cuts on his fingers where he'd been careless with handling the pieces (a feat within itself, for anybody who knows Baekhyun well knows he hardly has enough patience to wait for food to cook, let alone sit down and glue things together for a hours upon end) but in the end he's created something that he thinks might... vaguely... resemble a camera? Maybe? Hopefully? He's got no idea how to go about giving this to Yifan-- surely just going up to him and plopping this mess into his hands and saying "hey I fixed your camera it probably looks like shit but I really tried" wouldn't work. So he cradles the camera (if it can even be called that anymore), finding his way to the bedroom-- it's getting a little bit easier to navigate around the apartment these days-- and sets it down gently on the pillow, hoping, wishing that the reaction will be a positive one-- he's really got no idea if the other man will be angry at him for touching his possessions or if maybe he'll get a good laugh out of this but he hopes his effort, although he hasn't got much to offer, will be appreciated.
Yifan comes home to a dark apartment. It wouldn't be abnormal, seeing as he's lived on his own for several years in even more places than the years in his lifespan, but he's grown accustomed to seeing the same bright smile and mess of brown hair greeting him whenever he comes through the door. It's something he has come to expect— even if the other boy hasn't actually moved in, there is just never a day that he isn't here (not that Yifan minds having the extra company around the house though). There's only a brief flash of concern on his face as he rounds the corner before his entire countenance alters, a grin working it's way onto his lips as he catches a first glimpse of the boy while toeing off his shoes. Coming closer, he finds Baekhyun strewn across the couch, tuckered out and sleeping with his head nearly falling off the corner of the armrest, a little spot of drool pooling on the corner of his mouth— which would probably be repulsive if it was someone else, but it's Baekhyun so of course YIfan is going to find it endearing instead. His mood visibly lifts as he reaches the other, fingers briefly running through tangled locks to push them back, lips brushing over the cool skin of the currently sleeping male's forehead.
All too soon, he's unwillingly moving away and further into the depths of his apartment. He lets the man sleep for now, knowing fully well that he won't be able to handle the distraction of that little ball of energy being awoken when he has so much more to do. Just because Yifan is home doesn't mean his work is finished for the day. He has photos that have yet to be developed and endless amounts of past due assignments steadily piling up, things that could have easily been completed before this evening if he hadn't had so many thoughts and issues eating and clawing around at his insides. He had spent most of these last few days in disbelief, images of his camera shattering— his relationship shattering— continuing to run through his head. He's slipped into his bedroom by now, fingers scrunching up the fabric of his shirt as it's tugged up and over his head. He tries to put the memories away for now, but he knows the attempt is useless. He needs that camera, the information that had been safely stored in the memory card that he hopes survived the fatal crash, but just the thought of going back into that room and reliving what recently happened has him shuddering.
He's about to suck it up though-- not like he really has a choice or anything with several companies at his neck for his lateness-- and stride back into that one dreadful room when something glimmers in the corner of his line of sight. he's shocked, bewildered even, upon moving closer towards his bed when he spots his camera, or at least what used to be his camera, placed on top of a pillow sitting at the top of the mattress. The piece of equipment is a mess, pieces missing and all not in their original places, other shards poking out around the edges almost dangerously. He knows it will never work again, the camera beyond repairable and yet, his heart still swells in his chest anyways, an odd fluttering coiling around the insides of his stomach to know that Baekhyun would put in the effort to fix something that was so important to him. He knows just how impatient the other can be, and it must have taken a considerable amount of time for the younger boy to accomplish this, (and that is a feat in itself) so Yifan carefully scoops up the small camera that meant so much to him, the camera that is even more significant to his life. It signifies a new beginning for him, ending the issues and memories of the past and opening up a whole new path for him to take. He rushes back into the living room with a completely different outlook, camera clasped tightly in his hands before he's setting it down ever so gently on the coffee table. Pride expands his chest as he takes another glance at the tangle of limbs located on the edge of his couch, almost unbelieving of how somebody so caring had found their way into Yifan's life, and straight into his heart. And as he's slipping underneath the sleeping body beside him, grinning fondly at the way the man begins to instinctively snuggles into his chest, Yifan reasons that maybe having a distraction from his work isn't such a bad thing.
