You Don’t Trust Your Government. But You Still Obey. Why?
In spring 2025, the European Commission quietly released a truth it didn’t mean to.Not a scandal. Not a leak. A statistic. Only 32% of EU citizens trust their national governments.Only 36% trust political parties.Only 38% trust the media.(Eurobarometer 103, Spring 2025) And yet—people keep voting, paying, complying. Not with conviction. With inertia. This isn’t just a crisis of politics. It’s a…

Το κόστος των τροφίμων απασχολεί περισσότερο τους Ευρωπαίους σήμερα από ό,τι πριν...
Pesticide residues (69%) and additives such as dyes, preservatives or flavorings (54%) top the list of food safety concerns among Greeks.
The cost of food is more of a concern to Europeans today than a few years ago, making it the main factor influencing the food purchase, followed by taste.
At the same time, as noted in a related announcement by the Unified Food Control Agency, almost half consider food safety equally important and 41% of EU citizens take it for granted that the food they buy is safe.
These findings come from the 2022 special Eurobarometer on food safety in the EU (the fourth such survey since 2005). Based on interviews with 27,000 people across the EU, the survey provides a picture of how Europeans make food choices, their food safety awareness and concerns, and who they trust for information on food safety issues .
According to the executive director of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Bernhard Url, the events of the last three years, among which the global pandemic and the outbreak of war in Europe stand out, have had and continue to have dramatic consequences and it is not surprising that that for many Europeans, the rising cost of living is affecting their food choices more than before. On the other hand, food safety remains important to many EU citizens and it is encouraging that almost half of them are concerned about healthy eating as well as food risks.
It is noted that this survey, which is the latest snapshot of citizens' views, comes at a time when the EU's food safety system, EFSA and food safety agencies in several Member States are celebrating their 20th anniversary. . They were created in 2002 (it is worth noting that in Greece EFET has been operating since 2000), to give food safety in Europe a strengthened scientific basis, harmonized rules and to strengthen cooperation across the continent.
Regarding Greeks, the survey showed that the cost of food is of great concern to Greeks (70%), making it the main factor influencing food purchase decisions, followed by food safety (65%) and nutrient content (50%).
Almost all respondents (99%) are interested in food safety issues. They are also likely to have heard of pesticide residues in food (86%), food or drink additives (81%), food poisoning from food, drink contaminated with bacteria, viruses and parasites (75%) , diseases found in animals (73%) or residues of antibiotics, hormones or steroids in meat (72%).
Pesticide residues in food (69%) and additives such as dyes, preservatives or flavorings used in food or drinks (54%) top the list of food safety concerns among Greeks. Fewer people were concerned about microplastics found in food (12%) and the welfare of farmed animals (10%). It is noted that 59% of respondents care equally about healthy eating and about the dangers of food.
Around 7 in 10 (66%) cite family, friends, neighbors or colleagues as one of their main sources of information about food risks, followed by television (65%) and search engines in internet (49%).
Doctors are trusted by 9 out of 10 respondents (94%) and academics/public sector scientists (93%) for information on food risks.

Images: http://ec.europa.eu/commfrontoffice/publicopinion/index.cfm/ResultDoc/download/DocumentKy/83548
The publication assess the attitudes and opinions of Europeans about cultural heritage, investigating their personal involvement, interest, and the perceived importance and values they attach to Europe’s cultural heritage. It also looks into the impact of cultural heritage on tourism and jobs, accessibility, and responsibilities for its protection in Europe. The results help us understand the opinions and attitudes of Europeans so that we can promote our collective cultural experience.
So, what did we find out?
The vast majority of Europeans (84%) feel that cultural heritage is important to them personally, and 90% believe that it is important to their country. There is also a strong feeling that cultural heritage is a crucial part of European identity, with 80% believing that it is important to the EU as a whole.
Many Europeans are proud of the history and culture within their local communities; 82% take pride in historical monuments or sites, works of art or traditions from their region or country. Also, 7 in 10 agree that they take pride in a historical monument or site, work of art or tradition from a European country other than their own.
The majority (70%) claimed that living close to places with remarkable examples of Europe's cultural heritage can give people a sense of belonging to Europe.
Cultural heritage is clearly at the heart of our everyday lives, with 7 in 10 Europeans (71%) living close to a historic monument or site, and over half (51%) being personally involved in some form of cultural heritage. Moreover, 71% also believe that living near places of importance to Europe’s cultural heritage can improve their quality of life.
A large majority of Europeans (88%) believe that Europe's cultural heritage should be taught in schools, as it is highly relevant for our history and culture.
This is a small snapshot of the findings, but the full results are available on the Eurobarometer website. Country files are also available for all 28 EU Member States.
