Yuri Altin Leads After Short at Europeans

Skater in line for third straight title

TALLIN, ESTONIA – Two-time and reigning European Champion Yuri Altin of Russia currently leads a tight field. The 20-year-old skated a clean program, despite still recovering from a injury that took him off the ice right before Russian nationals, which he was forced to skate with only triples. The reigning World Champion has gained back two quads – the toe and the sal – but lacked the more difficult quads he’s become known for. Still, he managed to score 103.99 and currently sits in first place, and received the highest component scores of the event.

“I feel good about how I skated today,” said the three-time Russian National Champion. “Of course, I know I can do better, but considering where I was at a couple of weeks ago at Nationals, I am okay with this. It’s not my best, and it’s not a lot of cushion between me and those behind me. I can’t worry about that, though. I don’t know if it’ll be enough in the free, but it’s going to be a good fight.” By far the highest ranked skater here, Altin has said that is goal is to remain healthy for the Olympics and Worlds.

Currently in second place is three-time European bronze medalist Michele Crispino of Italy. He skated a clean short program, though less technically difficult that even Altin’s, but received high GOE and component scores. He scored 98.34. “I skated a great program today,” said the 27-year-old, who will be retiring after the Olympics next month. “Winning any color medal at my final Europeans would be great. I just want to skate well in the free.” Crispino will be going to his third Olympic Games next month.

Sitting in a near-tie in third place is Emil Nekola of the Czech Republic. The two-time European bronze medalist skated a clean and technically difficult short program to score 98.12. “It was a great short program!” said the 24-year-old, who was moved up to participate in the cancelled Grand Prix Final after Altin’s withdrawal. “I’m not worrying about what color I’m going to win or anything like that. I just want to skate well and have fun in the free.” With Nekola’s technical content, it will be hard for Altin and Crispino to beat him if he’s clean.

The free program takes place on Friday.
