This is Yukimura Ruki‘s (yukimuraruki-art) New Year’s present for Gwynes (aubergineinfatuation)

Dear Gwynes, thank you so much for providing such an exciting wish list! I am in the middle of moving stress and could therefore not write a fanfiction which would have been more suitable for Manga Kaworu meeting Anime Shinji and vice versa. Writing fanfictions in English is always time consuming to me since it’s not my mother tongue. However I hope you don’t mind receiving a little drawing of our favourite NGE couple KawoShin! I wanted to capture the traditional flair of New Years over in Japan, but wanted also to let it appear a liittle bit christmassy, still. I hope you like it even so it’s a fan art :) The size of the original digital painting is A4 and its resolution is at 300 dpi, but I was a little concerned about the maount of data going through the submission, so I decided to make a smaller version here. If you want to receive the original size, please let me know via a message.

Shinji tries tapping the elevator console – a prism of undulating lights that seemingly make no sense, but nothing he's done so far has made the bubble stop, or even remotely change course. "Damnit, how do you control this thing?" There's no readable text, no handles, no switches like an Evangelion cockpit or anything. With each attempt, the feeling of the future's alienness trickles more into his mind.

Stevie, not being his chattery self, observes the results of what Shinji does. It seems as if the machine is based on optical technology. Light patterns reflecting, refracting, being diffused. He thinks of what Scientific American articles have been writing about, quantum computing and all that jazz, and it hits him – this is how it's implemented!

Traditional computing has always been based on the binary on/off switch. Either it's 1 or it's 0, no in-betweens, and while computing power over the years has evolved exponentially on that paradigm, it's always been limited by the fundamental fact that binary is only in black and white. You couldn't have lifelike phenomena, no matter how complicated or clever your algorithms were, but with light waves, you can do naturalistic stuff very easily – like conveying natural thought processes (artificial intelligence).

That's what they're using here, light waves!

"Do you have to be an android to do stuff, that's the thing!" Shinji shouts in exasperation, and he kicks the console, sending a sudden jolt of brightness – the bubble they're in slows to a crawl.

Utena glances outside. It looks like sunset, with that yellowy haze that's being refracted across the many crystalline buildings. It's a dazzling view – nobody could've imagined this up. A feeling comes across her; like when you're feeling isolated, and long for contact. Even the slightest hello would be a romantic gesture.

A handful of things I noticed watching Evangelion 3.0+1.0 a second time...

Speculation and spoilers behind the cut.

We never get a clear explanation of just what happened during “Near 3rd Impact.” There’s only the vague insinuation that Shinji lost control of Unit 01 while trying to rescue Rei and then everything went to shit.

Except at the end of 2.0 Kaworu seemingly stops Shinji, descending from the moon in Evangelion Mark 6.

So what happened?

In 3.0+1.0 We get the quickest of glimpses of Near 3rd Impact...and that sure as hell isn’t Unit 01 holding the severed head of Lilith.

That’s the Mark 6.

And this is never explained.

Moving on, when Asuka is about to be absorbed into Unit 13 you can see Kaworu in the distance, between the legs of the “Shinkinami Type” as Asuka calls her.

My best guess is that when Kaworu was killed in 3.0 his soul remained in Unit 13, and Unit 13 being a dual-entry-plug type required two souls for it to take place in Fourth Impact.

As an aside, it’s revealed that in the Rebuild films, Asuka is the lone(?) survivor of a series of clones called “Shinkinami Types.” She ponders if the Shinkinami Type she sees when Unit 13 is absorbing her is “the original.” So it seems that in Rebuild, it’s the original Asuka’s soul inside Unit 02 (instead of the soul of Asuka’s Mother, like in the TV series). Which may explain why Mari was able to pilot it so easy in 2.0.

Lastly...(and I noticed this the first time around but) MARI’S ORIGIN FROM THE MANGA IS CANON APPARENTLY?!

In a bonus epilogue chapter of the Evangelion manga by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, we learn that Mari was a young prodigy that attended the same school as Gendo and Yui, and was in fact in love with/jealous of Yui. In 3.0+1.0 when Gendo flashes back to his college days...there’s Mari. Everywhere.

She seems to be the one that introduces him both to Yui and Fuyutsuki and

IS EVEN PRESENT WHEN SHINJI WAS BORN. 

And before this flashback, she has a brief encounter with Fuyutsuki and calls him “Professor” when addressing him.

Fuyutsuki in turn calls her “ Maria Iscariot” which I don’t think is supposed to be her “real name” but a nickname, implying Mari betrayed him (and Gendo?) in the past.

And finally (I didn’t take a screen cap of this but I want to remark about it) When Mari is teasing Asuka about possibly having a romantic interest in Shinji, Asuka replies “That boy doesn’t need a lover...he needs a mother.”

And it immediately cuts to Misato.
