Learn Basic Khmer Language and Culture - 4 Nov ‘til 9 Dec
Once again we are running our very successful Basic Khmer Language and Culture program. This series of workshops is just for you if you are new to Cambodia and want to learn a little of the language as well as the culture.
This program is not to teach you how to speak Khmer fluently but will teach you basic words and phrases that will help you get by. Unlike other Khmer learning classes we will also add a cultural element so you can learn some important customs. We are offering a series of 5 x 2 hour Wednesday evening workshops, by a facilitator skilled with both the English and Khmer Language.
Session 1 – Basic Numbers, Greetings and farewells
This session focuses how to say the numbers 1-10 in Khmer as well as basic greetings such as ‘Hello’ and how are you? You will also learn suitable answers for this question as well as appropriate ways to say goodbye. During the session you will also learn certain cultural ways to do this such as body language and what not to do such as pointing at certain things.
Session 2 – Advanced Numbers, Food and Drink
This session focuses on the remaining numbers you need to know as well as a majority of foods and drinks. With this knowledge you should be comfortable in most Khmer markets and restaurants. You will also be taught about certain Khmer cuisines/drinks and what they consist of.
Session 3 – I want, I need, Urban vs Rural Life
This session focuses on how to tell Khmer speaking people what you want and what you need. It will also explain how to ask for things particularly foods and drinks that were discussed previously. This workshop will also focus on the differences between urban and rural life for Khmer people.
Session 4 – Asking for directions and days of the week/months of the year, Relationships
It’s very easy to get lost in Cambodia even if you have stayed in the country for a while. This session will focus on how to get to places and to ask where they are. The workshop will finish by learning the days of the week and months of the year. The cultural element this week will focus on relationships for both friends and something more serious.
Session 5 – Everyday Khmer Nouns, Buddhism
We want to finish this program by introducing you to popular nouns other than foods and drinks and nouns covered in the previous sessions. We will use these nouns with some of the questions and statements that you have learned previously. The cultural element will focus on Buddhism, the main religion of Cambodia.
