One of my favorite things about this book is how different it is from the other stories in the series. Obviously, it has a lot of similarities, but the narrative and perspectives are so fresh that it feels brand new. There is also a new level of darkness in this novel that varies from the rest of the series. 

Shasta/Cor is such a great character because Lewis writes him like a real boy that faces very real struggles; especially when we see him interact with Aravis. Our introduction to a young Northern boy in a foreign land and culture gives a new perspective of the world in the wardrobe.

The Horse and His Boy Characters: Aravis Tarkeena 
//She wasn’t looking for a knight, she was looking for a sword// 
Aravis’ character exemplifies being an independent woman. Not only do we have someone who flees a life of arranged marriages and abuse, but does so on her own accord, dressed as a man, with nothing but a horse and a scythe. She is one of my favorite characters because of her ferocity throughout the book.
There is a lot of debate about Lewis’ thoughts on women/girls, especially referencing Susan, but I think we often forget about Aravis’ strength and the type of unconventional female role she represents. Her story is one that may have not typically been presented to children, especially young girls, but I think she acts as a unique role model.

@narnianexus Second Excursion The Horse and His Boy Characters: Lasaraleen Tarkeena //Her whole being dilated in an atmosphere of luxury. It was the background she required, the only climate she could breathe in// As much as I didn’t want to solely focus on the opulence of Lasaraleen’s life it is such a significant part of the book that I can’t not talk about it. What has always intrigued me about this character is the insight it gives into the world of Calormen. Not much is written about her past the surface level, but her actions throughout the book stand out more than her description. Despite being the superficial girl she is originally presented as, her loyalty has always stood out. She remains steadfast to her childhood friend, and although she finds her choices funny, supports Aravis.
