Twitter contests are a great way to successful promote your event using social media. TARGET AUDIENCE
To begin the promotion, you need to clearly decide what your target audience is. Create a master list of key targets in your industry you would like to attend the event. A great strategy is to include both national corporations and local group prospects. For example, if you are throwing a tradeshow for owners of non-profit organizations held in Cincinnati, you would want to create a master list of all of local groups, organizations, chambers and meetups in the nonprofit industry as well as nationwide and even international non-profit organizations and groups in your industry to target. PARALLEL AUDIENCE
Don’t forget parallel audiences! These are audiences that might not be directly a part of your industry but there are people within these groups that can benefit from your event. For example, many for-profit businesses, may also have a department for their non-profit fundraising and charity efforts. You want to add some of these parallel audiences to your list.
HASTAGS AND @MENTIONS
Now, that you’ve listed your targets, it’s time to get on twitter! Begin by creating a master list of influential twitter handles and hashtags. @Mention the twitter handles of target groups from your list and other influencers in your industry. Klout is a great tool for locating key industry influencers to connect with over social media. List all trending hashtags and twitter handles and start using them in your posts!
PRIMARY MESSAGING
Next, create a primary message that you will use to promote the contest. A great way to do this is to create a tweet with a specific hashtag for your contest. Each time a user retweets your message with the hashtag they are entered to win your contest, if it’s a raffle, the more retweets with your hashtag, the greater chance they have to win! It’s a good idea to encourage multiple retweets, since that also promotes your event.
Here is an example of a primary messaging for a twitter contest to promote the a food network cupcake event: “RT & Follow @greatcupcakes23 for a chance 2 win a collection of 50 top sprinkles and frostings #Cupcakes #EatMoreCupcakes29”
In this example, the hashtag #EatMoreCupcakes29 is the primary hashtag that will be promoted in all messaging throughout the event.
CROSS CHANNEL MARKETING
To receive maximum exposure, it is best to promote your twitter contest through as many avenues as possible – you don’t just have to use twitter. Promote your contest through cross-channel marketing including on Facebook, Instagram, blog outreach, your newsletter, event posters, QR codes, mailers, flyers, guest blog post, your website and other content marketing outreach.
THIRD PARTY APPLICATION
Use a 3rd party application like WishPond, which syncs directly to Twitter page to help promote and run the contest.
ATTENTION GRABBING IMAGE
Design and promotion of an attention grabbing image that goes along with the hashtag and Tweets you are promoting.
PAID ADVERTISEMENT
In addition to viral and shared media, you should also promote your event via paid advertisement including promoted tweets and promoted Facebook posts.
RELATIONSHIPS & PARTNERSHIPS
You can build relationships and partner with key industry influencers in your niche to promote the Tweet throughout their various channels. You want to have as many influencers in your industry promoting your tweet on their channels as well. If you are running a tradeshow, as your vendors to promote the contest on their social media channels. You can even offer an incentive or discount to your special partners that participate alongside you, in promoting the contest.
