The transformation happens overnight, as all magic happens. When morning arrives, there are countless canopy tents surrounding Yeyun Inn along with many tables and chairs. Sturdy poles line the side of the Boowan Hiking Trail, hanging flag streamers, inviting the inquisitive to continue onwards. At a small clearing near the top, close to the Yunhwa flowers, there are a few more tents standing proudly among the trees and even a small makeshift stage.
Right now they are empty except for a few equipment scattered here and there. But by late morning, shop and stall owners will move from their usual spot to the tents around Yeyun Inn. This will be their workplace for the next three days as the Spring Equinox Festival begins.
A popular festival for both tourists and citizens alike, the Spring Equinox Festival celebrates the entrance of spring. It offers a chance for local artisans to advertise their goods to a bigger crowd, and for arts and cultural expressions in music, dance, theatre, film, visual and digital arts, poetry and photography. The festival is so important that Monday’s considered a local holiday and everyone from young and old has time off to visit.
While the usual merchants linger on ground level, the town designates the upper level of the festival for more exclusive stalls. Run by people selected by the mayor, they offer Yunhwa flower flavoured delicacies. Here people can buy things such as liquor, honey, jam, tea, chapssaltteok, injeolmi, an endless assortment of items infused with the Yunhwa flower. There are also bihourly performances on the stage, ranging from theatrics about local legends to performances. It begins with a taepyeongmu on Saturday, then continues onto singers, traditional Korean drum performances, line dancing, and fan dances. Then there’s a closing ceremony on Monday night. Nobody famous performs, but it is an excellent opportunity for those living in the surrounding area to showcase their talent to curious viewers.
It is the belief and love for spring entering the countryside which strives as the inspiration for an annual spring cultural festival year after year. The Spring Equinox Festival has been around for generations and there’s no denying it will continue onwards for many more.
OOC Note: Hello happy first day of spring everyone! This is our first big major event, in time for the spring equinox. If your muse works at a business or stall during the period of the event, please assume they are working around Yeyun Inn. It is also reasonable for those who work in the Inn to assume there’s an influx of customers. Those who work at city hall, please assume your muse will run around the event, mostly ensuring everything is running smoothly. If anybody has a muse who they’d like to volunteer for a chance to shine on stage, please write a solo of their performance and we will add it to our newspaper article. While we want writing to be pressure free so you all can have fun, for the competitive we’re hosting a little contest. We will mention the top three with the most threads related to the event in the Ilbo. But we strongly reiterate this is optional! The event will go on from today until April 3rd and please tag all threads: #event1yh.
