Fail Better
“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” - Samuel Beckett
What does that even mean? Fail better? Surely failure is a bad thing, not something one generally aspires to you. Can you hear it, “This time I’m going to try really hard to fail!”? No, maybe not quite. Failing is definitely a negative result, however, that doesn’t mean that good cannot still come from it. It helps us to learn, it shows us what doesn’t work and it lets us figure out what to try next. I suppose we should welcome failure sometimes so that we can actually move on from something that clearly is not for us, because think of all the things in the world that are far better than we can imagine, and here we are sitting in our own pity party, settling for less than we’re capable of when we could be out there, trying again.
A young designer and PDE graduate, Matt Marais, came in and basically gave us all a pep talk on life, and specifically on being a designer. He’s had some really great successes since graduation, but he’s had his fair share of failure too, there will always be peaks and troughs to any career you choose, and expecting to immediately fall into the career of your dreams is ridiculously unrealistic. With that in mind, why not do something you really love! If it’s inevitable that you’ll have bad days, why not make it worth it? Really make it count! And how do you know what you love? By finding out what you don’t love, which means a little bit of failure. Say yes to opportunities! Try it out and maybe it’ll be a “failed” endeavour, but then, will it really be? Now you have a better direction than you would have done had you stayed in your own pity party.
That quote from Samuel Beckett became Matt’s mantra in a time where nothing seemed to be working. It gave him the courage to keep going, to keep trying, to keep failing, so that he could fail better next time.
Oh and by the way, I’m the one in a pity party, I’m the one who’s settling for less than I’m capable of and I’m the one who needs to learn how to fail better.
