Do you think hijacked Peeta fell out of love with Katniss? Or did he hate her/was afraid of her but still loved her? Is post hijacked Peeta the same Peeta or a new person altogether?
Thank you, ❤ @everlarkshipper
That’s a good question, but I personally think he’s always Peeta? I posted a gifset with a quote from Johanna that I really love which encapsulates an idea that’s tough to grasp when you’re younger but gets clearer with time and experience:
“He’s changed,” I say.
“So have you. So have I. And Finnick and Haymitch and Beetee. Don’t get me started on Annie Cresta. The arena messed us all up pretty good, don’t you think? Or do you still feel like the girl who volunteered for your sister?” she asks me.
“No,” I answer.
“That’s the one thing I think my head doctor might be right about. There’s no going back. So we might as well get on with things.”
He obviously wasn’t acting like himself when he was hijacked, but that was done without his consent so the resulting behaviour isn’t what Peeta wanted. Seeing himself attack Katniss on the Capitol broadcast horrified him because he couldn’t see himself clearly until then. The Capitol stripped down his identity, as Beetee states upon his return to 13. You can’t really apply rational thought or explanation to his violent episodes, but he was obviously very afraid and confused when he was first rescued. They mention that he starts arguing with himself at one point after being especially mean to Katniss and everyone else gets mad at him for it. Poor dude was put into an internal Hunger Games against his will.
It’s also part of Katniss’ journey where instead of having a target she can shoot, she has to stay and face down something she’s really afraid of - being vulnerable and admitting she cares about something that she could very likely lose or thinks she has already lost. She has to find her real self somewhere in the middle of being forced into the roles of the Capitol darling (and then enemy, WHICH MIRRORS HER RELATIONSHIP WITH PEETA TOO) and the untouchable District 12 rebel, just like Peeta has to find himself again.
She talks about it being an impossible task and says that she has no idea how to help him, but it ends up happening organically because their love and compatibility is genuine and Peeta is a truly compassionate person deep down. The further he gets from the influence of the torture and violence, the more he returns to himself. He’s ill, but Katniss, friends, art, baking, happy memories, etc and time/space to heal are the remedy.
