I have sat on those wooden steps -- feet dangling over the edge, contemplating the stones and the pattern on the wall - many, many times. My favorite visit was during a torrential downpour when everyone and everything-but-the-rain stopped. If you go to Kyoto, visit this place at 8am sharp and you'll have about 15 minutes of absolute peace before the school trip kids arrive and start counting the stones.
