I have sat on those wooden steps -- feet dangling over the edge, contemplating the stones and the pattern on the wall - many, many times. My favorite visit was during a torrential downpour when everyone and everything-but-the-rain stopped. If you go to Kyoto, visit this place at 8am sharp  and you'll have about 15 minutes of absolute peace before the school trip kids arrive and start counting the stones.  Until you can get there in person, here's a two minute video to plant the seed.

My neighbourhood has a lot of Buddhist craftspeople. They make altar fittings, carve statues, etc. One warehouse is used for cleaning parts of temples. I pass by every day and there is some new chunk of a temple that has been hauled over to be cleaned and repaired, before it is sent back to be re-installed!

Sunday morning. I hear the calling of Buddhist monks on alms round as they walk down the narrow street in front of my house. I give some dana. I had always lived in apartments in Kyoto, so never had this experience before. Anumodana! 🙏📿
