You should listen to Slowdive
Let’s start the year by being a nuisance. Happy 2026, by the way.
This year greets me with a strange mix of relief and vertigo, as if I had finally pushed open a door that had been stuck for months. After almost three months of absolute creative block: ideas that stayed half‑formed, texts that seemed to promise something and then deflated, that feeling of staring at a blank page that stares right back at you, etc. I’ve finally felt that spark again. That urge to write on anything, even the walls of my room.
Still, even when I wasn’t writing, I never stopped listening to music or reading. Those two things are my vital constants.
And it was precisely while listening to music that my end‑of‑year revelation arrived. I was going through my library of albums, doing that little farewell ritual for everything I listened to in 2025, what saved you, what transformed you. And then Souvlaki, my beloved Slowdive’s album, appeared, hitting me straight in the emotional memory. That’s where it all began. Well, there and with Lana Del Rey, but Lana deserves her own chapter, her own altar, her own post. Today is not her day. Today is Slowdive’s.
My musical awakening happened almost by accident. One day, sometime in the post‑pandemic haze, I watched Persepolis (highly recommended, truly). And I don’t know if it was the film, my mental state or some cosmic alignment, but one thing led to another and I ended up listening to Souvlaki Space Station like someone locking eyes with a wild animal in a moment of spiritual connection. Suddenly I was alone in a cold galaxy, suspended in an immense void, yet with a warm glow cutting through layers of distortion. It felt like the music wrapped me in a kind of luminous fog, a strange embrace that promises nothing but holds you anyway. First came Souvlaki, then Just for a Day, then the entire concept of shoegaze (yes, yes, the whole staring‑at‑your‑feet thing), Pygmalion… and there was no turning back.
And Just for a Day, wow. Let me start there. That album carried me through some of my hardest moments. I remember heading out in winter to catch the 6 a.m. bus: absolute darkness, that kind of cold that bites your fingers, the bus stop full of hunched‑over bodies waiting in silence. And me, with my headphones on, simply hitting play. It has tracks that begin slowly, unhurried, without overwhelming you, building themselves as if they were breathing. And then there’s Primal, which I think is an absolute masterpiece. That commute was so beautiful, watching the day begin while the world was still half asleep.
I have to admit I’m not the most objective person when it comes to Slowdive. I love all their albums —some more than others, of course—, but even the ones that touch me less still have something that pulls me in. Their discography feels impeccable, coherent and honest. Slowdive isn’t just a band I listen to. It’s a place I return to.
Like many other things in life, Slowdive and their music have shaped me into the person I am today with the tastes that define me and the sensitivity that follows me everywhere. Thanks to them I discovered not only that I love music, but that I can appreciate it from a different place, deeper and more aware. With them music isn’t just melody or rhythm, but atmosphere, texture, intention. And ever since, I’ve enjoyed analyzing it, taking it apart, letting myself be carried by whatever it makes me feel. It’s as if they opened a door I didn’t know how to cross. And maybe that’s why starting the year talking about them feels almost like an act of justice.
