If you wanted, more than anything, to make me weep with classical music in the style of Everywhere at the End of Time, then replace the terminal lucidity section with a semi-degraded version of the nocturne from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
There’s a specific recording of that piece that I grew up listening to. It was track one of a collection of lullabies I listened to every night from infancy until I was 12. And we know that in dementia, childhood memories last the longest. So if I heard that piece at the end of “Place in the World Fades Away”, I would bawl like a baby.
I still consider that nocturne to be my favourite piece of music ever composed. My god, it’s devastatingly beautiful.
