1. What is your favorite subject and why?
That's a difficult question that I hear all too much. I guess out of all the classes I've taken at my particular school my favorite would either be Biology or English.
Outside of school I can't choose a favorite subject. I love all too many things and am constantly researching them. It's a bit excessive and definitely obsessive.
2. If you could meet one deceased person, who would it be?
I've been asked this before and responded with a list of ten. But uh... currently I have a huge brain-crush on Democritus. I too believe there is nothing but atoms and the void and, like him, knowledge is my joy.
3. If you could rewrite any part of your life story, would you?
That's something I've pondered for a very long time. It's kept me lying awake at night, anxiety-filled and scraping at the skin on my face (bad habit I've developed during times of stress)... I used to say that I wanted to live life with no regrets, but in fact I've done things that I do regret. Everyone does, I'm told.
Starting over from age 5 with all the knowledge I have now would be amazing. I'd be more confident. I'd be happier. I'd get involved in more. I think I'd even stop myself from getting depressed or becoming incredibly insecure. But I'd still make mistakes. That's a self-evident prophecy for humanity. And I like to think that all these idiotic, self-serving, naive, or spiteful things I've done will change me for the better. I think experience comprises the majority of what creates a person and so the regret of my errors and the errors themselves are a part of who I become.
Bukowski, an author I respect highly, said that we all become what we most hate in this world. I think what matters is how we react to that. Whether we change upon elucidation. That is the deciding factor in whether we have really transformed into that monster we've always despised.
I want to take back a lot. I want to take back not reporting my friend cutting herself and I wish I had gotten her help. I want to take back the callous words that came out of my mouth towards someone that was once dear to me. I want to take back all my fights. I want to take back the thoughts of self-hatred and tell myself that those 3rd graders were vindictive and that what they said had nothing to do with me. I want to take back a lot of my past relationships. I want to keep the old me from trying so hard to fix those around me and therefore losing my own happiness. I want to rewrite my story completely. I want to be so much more than I am.
But whenever I come to this question, I always arrive at the same answer- no matter how many quotes and facts I add into the discussion. I wouldn't change my past. They made me into this current state of being that I hold and will only help me form into something greater in the future. We are ever-changing and I need to look towards the future instead of scrutinizing and crying over the past.
4. What is your favorite book?
Currently it's Cosmos by Carl Sagan. It's non-fiction so not for everyone, but it changed my perspective on the entire universe. I find it difficult to express my thoughts in a way that's understandable to others, but I found such solace in highlighting and annotating its text.
5. If you could have one ability that you don’t have now, what would it be?
By ability I think you mean something that's seen as plausible so I'll narrow it down to... the ability to understand math or to be great at something musically. Those are areas that I really lack in. One because I find numbers constricting and the other because I've always thought I have no rhythm. It'd be nice to have another art form in my arsenal and if I were great at math I'd have the confidence to go into the field of quantum mechanics or become an astrophysicist.
6. You are given an unlimited amount of money. What is the first thing you do with it?
Unlimited!!! That changes everything. I think I'd first sign up for every college course I've ever wanted in either New York or Paris. I'd be so incredibly excited.
7. What fictional world would you choose to live in?
Hmmm... I've also thought a lot about this one as well. Haha. I like the idea that fictional worlds are actually alternative universes so it's come to mind often. As a person who has read both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (not to mention knowing all of Jabberwocky by heart...) I'd have to say Wonderland sounds best to me.
8. What is your dream house?
My favorite animal, the tardigrade, inspired a house actually and I'd love to live in it. Otherwise my dream house is just one where I get to paint murals everywhere.
9. If you could switch places with someone for 24 hours who would you choose?
That's an interesting question. I've never actually desired to be someone else no matter how much I've disliked myself. I suppose for 24 hours I'd love to be... Hank Green. He's one of my favorite people that are alive. I'd rather meet him than be him though haha. This is one I'll have to think about more I guess.
10. What is your favorite animal?
THE TARDIGRADE!!!!!!! You have no idea how amazing they are just AAAAHHHH! Watch this video: Tardigrades: Adorable Extremophiles
