When I started working in Hollywood, if you had an accent you had to be a villain because villains were always foreigners. But now, when Hollywood is not making most of the money on the domestic market anymore, they can allow themselves to have good guys with accents as well because the world is [now] the market. (2014)
What you always want to do is to make [the villains] human one way or another. It's not about making them sympathetic always [or] making them psychologically understandable. 'Aww, he had a bad childhood,' or whatever. It's like 'Ecce Homo'. 'See the human', you know, like Jesus said. Even if you see someone that is a monster, when you recognize that there's a human in there it might even make you reflect on, 'well, where's the monster in me?' (2021)
Stellan Skarsgård on playing villains
"In the book, [Baron Vladimir Harkonnen] is very talkative but in the film I wanted him to be a man of few words. ... I wanted [him] to get away from a feeling of decadence and more toward a feeling of power." — Denis Villeneuve

I ordered some boiled ham hock, with floppy skin and everything on it. I was really happy gobbling floppy pork skin and that greasy meat. — Stellan Skarsgård
