Upstairs, Downstairs DVD Commentary: On those bedroom scenes with Rose and Sarah:
Jean Marsh: There were a few scenes, in maybe two episodes, when you really learn a lot about Rose because she's reacting to what a fantastically brave girl Pauline was. Sarah was. All these bedroom scenes — which I think people make a mistake about. You know, they think it's sapphic and they're sexual scenes, but I don't think they are. I think it was quite normal for downstairs people to sleep together. They were freezing.
Fay Weldon ("On Trial" writer): I think they were fond of each other, and there was a kind of tension there, but they wouldn't have ever known or thought about any such possibility.
Jean: Absolutely not. I think, in a sense, Rose had a crush on Sarah —
Evin Crowley (Emily): What, physically?
Jean: No, no, no. They're like girls at school.
Fay: And they had an emotional relationship. And you admired somebody, and you lived in a world without men or boys.
