Rashaan and Kerquis... get along?!

Astarion's family continues to reconnect~

"I got so lost in my own grief", she says quietly, "that I forgot I still had a second boy. One who still needed his mother. I stopped supporting you when you needed me most. I left you to fend off your father's expectations alone." "I..." Evin opens his mouth to refute her—to tell her she did no such thing. But he can't. Because it would be a lie. She did drown in her grief. For years. Locked herself in her room. Stopped coming to his concerts. Stopped listening. Stopped being his mother. And now, instead of easing the weight on her shoulders with kind lies, Evin chooses honesty. Because this family has endured enough silence—enough false politeness—to last a lifetime. "It was like you died too", he murmurs. "Like I lost Starry and you in one fell swoop. And all I had left was Pa... just him and his lectures about what I was supposed to do with my life." "I know, Órellel." Tears well up again in Edraele's eyes—this time heavy enough to fall. She doesn't try to wipe them away. Instead, she presses her palm more firmly against his cheek, as if anchoring herself in the moment. "We lost so, so many years... Years we can't get back. Years I should've sketched, drawn, painted. For you. For me. For all of us. But that stops now." Evin can't help but smile at the quiet promise hidden in her words. "You really mean it?" "I mean it", Edraele nods. "You were so beautiful just now, lost in the music. I made a mental image of it—I'm going to paint you. Just like that." "Oh, Ma, that's... that's wonderful." Evin can hardly believe it. After nearly two centuries, she's going to pick up a brush again—to create a painting that, like her old work, might steal the breath from anyone who sees it. Overcome, he pulls her into a tight hug. She wraps her arms around him in turn, holding on fiercely. "It's time, Glirion", she murmurs against his shoulder. "You've grown so much. And I know that when your father hears you—truly hears you—he'll see it too."

Chapter 13: The Loan Shark

My petty side wrote this one.

Lachlan gets owned.

I will not apologize.

Evin closes his eyes, drawing in a slow, grounding breath. The exhale that follows is heavy, dragging with it years—no, decades—of fear, shame and struggling survival. The chains aren't just broken. They're gone. And yet the absence of them feels unfamiliar, like the silence left behind after a long, relentless storm. As he steadies himself, Octavian is already moving, efficient and focused. He retrieves a sending stone from a pouch at his hip, thumb brushing over the smooth surface as he activates it. His voice, when he speaks, is clipped, low and businesslike. "Sorry to disturb you this early, Jaheira", he says, "but do you have any Harpers undercover in a kingpin's network? Name's Lachlan. Operating out of Glórenel." A pause, then a female voice crackles through—seasoned, sharp, laced with dry amusement. "Not that I know of, but I'll double-check", Jaheira replies. "Why? You make another enemy, Octavian?" Her tone is fondly exasperated, like someone used to patching the holes he leaves in his wake. He chuckles, sliding a hand through his hair. "You know me. I'm a Vengeance Paladin who lives up to the name. And this piece of shit's got it coming. If we don't stop him now we might have another Gortash on our hands." His eyes flick toward the door Lachlan vanished through and something dangerous smolders behind them. "But get back to me when you can. In the meantime... I think I'll ask my boy for a favor." "He's more than capable", Jaheira responds without hesitation. "I'll let him know directly if there are any allies in Lachlan's ranks when he infiltrates." "Thanks, Jaheira", Tav murmurs, a small smile tugging at his lips as he pockets the stone once more. "What are you planning?" Evindral asks, his voice soft but edged with unease. Octavian's lips curl into a slow, knowing smirk. The kind that doesn't just promise action—it promises results. "You see..." he begins, tone light but undercut with steel, "the guild in Baldur's Gate doesn't let men like Lachlan thrive unchecked. They keep the more sadistic kingpins on a leash—just enough slack to keep the underworld orderly, but not enough to let them run wild. That balance? It doesn't exist here in Glórenel." He exhales heavily and runs a hand through his tousled hair, frustration flickering in his storm-blue gaze. "So if the guild won't clean house, we'll do it ourselves."

Currently working on the next chapter for Symphony of Colors

contents: paying Evindral's debts and taking Lachlan on a happy little trip because he is an asshole.

Premise/Notes for this bit:

Lachlan: I don't want your money, I want to extort you.

Octavian: How about a flight?

Lachlan: You mean fight?

Octavian: Did I stutter?

"Evindral", Octavian cuts in sharply, his voice shifting with chilling precision, smooth as drawn steel, "open the window. Wide." It's a voice from another life—the voice of a commander in the assassin pits, of a man who once issued orders to those who dealt in death like it was currency. It isn't a request. It's a command that vibrates through the room like thunder. Lachlan barks out a laugh. "What? You think a little fresh air's gonna change my mind?" But the twitch in his eye betrays him. His instincts whisper that something is wrong. That he's just stepped into a trap. And if there's one thing men like him know—it's when the predator has stopped circling and started moving. To his credit, he doesn't show fear. Not outright. And Tav respects that, in a way. Weakness, after all, is a death sentence in the kind of empire Lachlan runs. Behind them, Evin obeys without a word. The windows creak open, spilling cool morning air into the room. Then Tav moves. Despite the weight of his armor, he lunges with startling speed, all thanks to year long training with a vampiric husband. He snatches Lachlan by the front of his leathers and hauling him to his feet. The chair skitters backward and before Lachlan can even draw a full breath, Tav surges forward— —and dives through the window. The world erupts into cold air and open sky. Lachlan gasps, the wind tearing the sound from his throat. They plummet for a heartbeat before, with a burst of force and light, enormous blood-red and silver wings explode from Tav's back, catching the air and wrenching them skyward in a violent ascent. "You see", Octavian says as he climbs with slow, powerful wingbeats, voice cutting clean through the wind, "I'm used to carrying others. My husband. A child or two. They're light. You? Not so much." He tilts slightly mid-flight, letting Lachlan sway in his grip. "So if I happen to let go...", a smirk with all teeth and dark glee, "well, chalk it up to exhaustion." Lachlan snarls again, struggling to find purchase on Tav's armor. His hands scrabble uselessly across polished metal, seeking anything to hold onto, his earlier bravado all but evaporated in the face of empty sky. And Tav... just keeps rising.

Name: Octavian Dominic Simon Exeltis III Born: 30th Flamerule 1371 Height: 6'5 Species: Aasimar Class: Paladin (OoV) Romance: Astarion Other details: Durge character, he's been obsessed with Astarion since they first met in 1391. (He grew a soul for Astarion) He was made by Bhaal without a soul, grown in a surrogate mother and placed into a noble house so the cult could have access to all that sweet, sweet coin. When he was 5 his wings first emerged and Bhaal used them to slaughter his entire family to ensure he was the last living heir to the fortune. He never got over that.

Name: Amelia Katelynn Geneviève Exeltis Born: 1st Eleint 1360 Height: 5'5 Species: formerly half-elf, now vampire Class: TBA Romance: none so far Other details: She was only 16 when she stumbled out of her burning family home after Octavian slaughtered everyone. Through some miracle she survived the initial injuries but Petras snatched her and Caz turned her into one of his spawn, she's been rotting in the tourmaline depths ever since.

Name: Rashaan Aleval Born: 10th Uktar 1463 Height: 6'2 Species: Seldarine Drow Class: Rogue/Assassin Romance: first love: Vitani, FWB: Ievos, second love: Maya Other details: The Bhaalspawn Octavian never wanted to create. Details here He's a guildsman, an assassin taking jobs that require the best stealth skills to go around. Sorcha taught him most of what he knows about his craft and he's most accurate with throwing knives. He's also able to blend into the slightest shadows. In my universe he killed his twin Riminar in one of their first Bhaalspawn'esque outbursts of bloodlust. Riminar belongs to @acutecastle

Name: Vashti Aleval Born: 1399 Height: 5'4 Species: Drow (exiled Lolthsworn) Class: TBA (something with magic tho) Romance: absolutely not Other details: She survived Tav's attempt on murdering her because of a medical condition that cause her organs to be flipped in her body (Situs Inversus) A heavy drinker, she's both fond of her son and hates him all the same, it's complicated.

Name: Maya Evorio Born: 14th Tarsakh 1469 Height: 5'1 Species: High Elf Class: Wildmagic Sorceress Romance: Rashaan Other details: She was raised by a dragon on his own demiplane called Aurum. She's never been off that plane which made it all the more confusing when she fumbled a dimension door spell and ended up in Toril and was unable to return to Aurum. When she gets nervous or surprised she loses control of her magic, though nothing ever truly tragic happens, mostly just changing her appearance or that of those around her or summoning mephits or quasits.

Name: Verysyssak Born: don't ask... he is OLD (a great Wyrm) Height: 7'8 as a Dragonborn, 70 ft bodylength as a dragon, tail length 76 ft Species: Dragon (Electrum dragon) Class: TBA Romance: None worth mentioning Other details: He once fought a green dragon near Maya's home village, the village got destroyed but in the aftermath he found a toddler on a mountaintop. Maya; her wild magic had teleported her off when the fighting started and she got scared. He took the kid along with him because he felt guilty about having part in killing her family. He taught her magic but when she was older he purposefully disrupted her dimension door spell to get her back to the plane she came from because he thought it was about time she find out about where she came from and found some friends.

Name: Aodhán Tóirfhiontar Born: 19th Ches 1255 (Spring Equinox) Height: 5'8 Species: Wood Elf/homebrewed Leopard shape-shifter/wereleopard Class: Circle of Land Druid Romance: Halsin Other details: The anchor-being of my universe, there was one pivotal moment where either him or another druid could've survived in a fight between the two. If it hadn't been Aodhán, the world would look very, very different. I will explore this in AUs at some point.

Name: Sorcha Tóirfhiontar Born: 14th Eleasis 1251 Height: 5'2 Species: Wood Elf/homebrewed Leopard shape-shifter/wereleopard Class: Gloomstalker Ranger/Thief-Rogue multiclass Romance: Rolan Other details: She carries a boatload of duty, guilt and regret around with her. Life was not kind to this woman. But she always saw to it that the weight of the world steered clear of Eithne, she wanted her little sister to have a happy childhood at least.

Name: Eithne Tóirfhiontar Born: 21st Alturiak 1260 Height: 5'4 Species: Wood Elf/homebrewed Leopard shape-shifter/wereleopard (Panther form) Class: Circle of Land Druid Romance: Evindral Other details: She grew up with Sorcha as her surrogate mother and working the one or other odd job for the guild with her. She's a very fancy druid.

Name: Solasán Tóirfhiontar Born: 20th Kythorn 1493 Height: 6'3 Species: Wood Elf/homebrewed Bear shape-shifter/werebear Class: Circle of Moon Druid Romance: none yet, but he might be poly Other details: As an elven soul who wanted to reincarnate, he picked Aodhán and Halsin as his parents which meant that Aodhán had to come up with a ... creative way to create him a body.

Name: Evindral Ancunín Born: 4th Nightal 1267 Height: 5'10 Species: High Elf Class: Bard Romance: Eithne Other details: After Astarion died, his parents tried to have him exhumed and brought home to rest in the family morgue. Alas the body was gone, and they spend most of their fortune to pay people to find it. This resulted in his father sort of neglecting him and split up the family. Apart from that Kerquis tried to make Evindral the next heir but Evin didn't fit his picture of that as he was more interested in music than in politics. Evindral tried to make it on his own, resulting in a gambling addiction and crippling debt...

Name: Edraele Ancunín Species: High Elf Occupation: Painter Romance: Kerquis Other details: Astarion's mother, she's a painter, his parents never quite got over the fact that their first born's body vanished.

Name: Kerquis Ancunín Species: High Elf Occupation: Magistrate Romance: Edraele Other details: Astarion's father his parents never quite got over the fact that their first born's body vanished. He became even more strict after that. There is a wedge between him and Evindral these days.

Name: Vincent Born: 1246 Height: 5'6 Species: Half-Drow (Lolthsworn origin), turned Vampire Spawn Class: Ranger Romance: Sebastian Other detail: My first trans male character because I want to be more inclusive in my writing! He's been locked up in Reithwin morgue for 130 years until the party found him during their time in the Shadow Cursed Lands. As a result of that he wasn't very vocal for quite some time, kept thinking he did talk when in fact he only thought what he wanted to say.

Updates may slow down as I only have the VinSeb chapter prewritten, working on the Sorlan chapter though. Just hoping the smut-muse smiles upon me.

"It's you", she repeats, her voice steady, but there's something fragile underneath it, something hesitant, as though saying it aloud has made it more real than even she was prepared for. "My panther decided that she wants you. For now, for later, for forever." She shrugs—small, awkward, like it should be so simple, and yet, it is the most profound thing she has ever said. Her smile tilts uncertainly, almost shyly, as she continues, "I just... I didn't want to overwhelm you with something so profound when you didn't even want a relationship yet." And Evindral? He laughs. Not just a chuckle. Not a small exhale of amusement. He throws his head back and laughs. A full-bodied, wild, disbelieving sound that pours out of him in waves, shaking his chest, forcing him to clutch his ribs from the effort. Because—gods above—the absolute absurdity of this moment. "I've held back because I didn't want to get hurt when you found this profound connection with someone else!" he exclaims between fits of laughter, his jade eyes alight with incredulous amusement. "And you've held back because you thought I was too chicken to allow us to have something like that? Oh, that's just hilarious, Gwaewig!" His laughter fills the room, unrestrained, unapologetic, and it's only made better when Eithne joins in. Her own melodic, bell-like laughter spills into the space between them, mingling with his in a way that makes it sound almost like a song, like a harmony they didn't know they'd been composing together all along. It's ridiculous, stupidly perfect. And gods, it feels so right. "We're quite the idiots, aren't we?" she muses between laughs, her smile wide, bright, unguarded, her hair a wild halo of copper curls against the pillows. Evindral, still chuckling, shakes his head, his smirk just as fond as it is playful, before he leans down, brushing his nose against hers, lingering there for just a breath. Then, with unspoken understanding, he captures her lips in a kiss—brief, gentle, effortless. "It seems we are."

Chapter 16: The first leap

Kerquis makes an effort. Things are starting to mend.

Kerquis nods as he looks at her, his blue eyes meeting her jade gaze. Striking eyes she passed onto their son, Evindral. But where hers show the softness, he so often basked in when they were still younger, when his soul wasn't so jaded, Evin's eyes look at him with suspicion these days. And he's beginning to acknowledge that he's more than earned that particular look. In his attempt to navigate Evindral toward a life of security, he'd pushed so hard that his youngest now expects his disapproval with everything he does. And, he realizes—it pains him. It pains him that his own son is constantly bracing for the next blow Kerquis might deal to his self-esteem, for the next time he might belittle his passion for music and disregard his talent. And he can't help but ask himself: When was the last time I truly—truly—listened to Evindral play an instrument? His fist clenches underneath Edraele's warm hand on the table. Then, Kerquis forces himself to relax and turns his palm up, entwining his fingers with Edraele's. He allows himself a small smile in her direction before he turns to face his youngest during a lull in the conversation. "You are practicing for the concert tonight, are you not?" he asks, he can't entirely keep the ice out of his tone. He realizes he, too, is bracing for a blow. Bracing for Evindral to hiss at him. To tell him that it's none of his business anymore. The strain on his relationship with Evindral hurts to the point where it feels like it's choking the air from his lungs, and the ice on his soul is the only thing keeping him from unraveling completely. It's a habit he learned from his own father. If one ignores their emotions often enough, they eventually vanish into the depths of one's soul. It becomes hard to love, hard to show that one cares. But at the same time, it also becomes hard to get hurt. It's what kept him sane, what kept him standing through the pressing grief of Astarion's death. But now, the ice doesn't serve him anymore. Yet still, old habits die hard. The conversation on the other end of the table stops abruptly, and five pairs of eyes turn to Kerquis. Rashaan lifts an eyebrow, his lips curling up in an amused smirk, while Astarion glares at him on Evindral's behalf. Only Octavian shows him a benevolent smile, while Nigel's eyes look slightly confused but otherwise attentive. But it's Evin that Kerquis is focused on right now. And there it is again: That narrowing of jade green eyes. Suspicion about what Kerquis might say next, bracing for yet another blow to his self-esteem and yet another lecture about how music is not the way to go. "Yes?" Evin's voice lilts up at the end of this one small word. The question he isn't asking hangs heavy in the air between them. What's it to you? "Naturally", Evindral continues. And then— Kerquis pushes the words past the frost in his chest and voices his wish. "I should like to listen in... If you'll allow me."
