Arkhelios Adventures
Too launched herself at the dust bunnies lurking behind the stairs. With Theo being away from his familiar, the cat had very little to do every day, aside from watching Roman bake. Roman was currently baking elaborate twin birthday cakes in the kitchen and Too had been repeatedly removed from the area. She would come back later when he was distracted. She and Theo had spent countless hours rehearsing the perfect cupcake heist, so she was confident that she could steal something small without Theo's help.
Only a fraction of the food would remain at the Bellamy estate. After a quick meal and some cake, the thirteenth birthday party was transferring to the Helios estate with the extended Helios family, leaving Too plenty of time to hunt leftovers.
Luciana wasn't paying attention to the scheming cat by her feet. Her friends were texting her about their lives away from Pleasantview and how miserable they were. With Princess Zarah's closed due to the threat of the plague, Luciana had been trapped in Twikkii Island half of the time, and trapped in Arkhelios the other half. In Twikkii Island, neither her father or stepfather were really avaliable to their kids. Evren was frequently gone, putting out fires for the Pleasantview coven, and briefing Queen Claudia on the progress being made against Xexys.
Adrian practically lived in the palace with Queen Maura, only coming home at night to care for his family. It worried Luciana how afraid both of her Twikkii Island parents were. Neither would willingly be this far from home if the world wasn't in danger and both Evren and Adrian were on the front lines of the threat from Jubilant Accosts.
It made Luciana's stomach churn just walking by the memorial to Prince Ewan Goldman whenever she visited the palace. He had once held her father's job leading the military during a war with Pleasantview, and he'd died horribly as a result. Several of his siblings had died and even one of his kids.
Queen Maura had lost her mother and two of her children to the same assassin that threatened Pleasantview now. There was a reason Luciana was barely passing Twikkii Island history in school: in her textbooks, most of her family had died gruesomely and it was extremely difficult to write essays about it. Her father had already been declared dead once, the day she and Rien were born, so it was extremely easy to picture her life with her father and stepfather buried together in a royal vault described by a history textbook. There was a very real chance that at least one of them would die in this conflict and the only way Luciana knew how to manage this anxiety was to lose herself in a sport or to spend time with her friends. All of her friends were stuck at home, just like she was, and most sports were cancelled, so Luciana kept herself sane swimming in the ocean and texting everyone she knew. One day, she would take her father's position and become a duchess, making her a target whose grusome death might one day also be in a history textbook for her child to read about.
It was harder to deal with her anxiety when she spent time with her Arkhelios parents. The ocean there was too dangerous to swim in, and cell service wasn't always great. Theo's absence was driving her father crazy, though he had gotten much better at hiding it. Luciana desperately missed Theo too and feared his own messy death, despite the immense power he had. What would happen if her brother didn't come home from Jubilant Accosts? The thought was unbearable.
It was her thirteenth birthday, as well as Rien's and Noelle's, and there wasn't a Winterfest decoration in sight. Noelle had been born during a Winterfest party at the Bellamy house, but there wasn't any festivities or decoration outside of the cakes Roman was making. It wasn't Winterfest when a member of their family was missing, according to Roman, and the family had supported this ruling. It helped that Queen Maura was equally distressed at the thought of celebrating a happy holiday while under the threat of a demonic sleeping plague caused in part by her father. It was too risky to hold the annual ball and invite potential enemies into the heart of the palace and Maura had already lost too much to chance her remaining children's lives.
The Bellamy-Siew blended family would still exchange gifts this year, but everything else special about the holiday would be celebrated next year, provided that everyone survived that long and Theo returned home alive and well. It wasn't the thirteenth birthday or Winterfest that Luciana had pictured, but at least most of her family would all be in the same house together. Unless a queen needed help with an emergency, Luciana and Rien had their Twikkii Island parents' promise to stay with the family for the entire day.
"Boys! Watch those wands! If you're not careful, you could snap it in half, and then we'll all have to spend your sisters' birthday in the medical center. You promised that you would be careful if I let you use real wands and if you break these, you won't be getting them back."
Evren watched his sons attempt to mimic the proper form for holding a wand, and sighed with relief. He didn't have time to mediate sibling squabbles when he could barely keep his promise to the girls that he could stay to celebrate their birthday.
There had been a Coby Wall sighting in Pleasantview-at least what someone swore was a sighting, and it had taken all of the early morning to deal with. It was a false lead, but the news of Coby being anywhere near Pleasantview had sparked concern in Twikkii Island. Evren had endured a conference call with Queen Maura and Queen Claudia at three in the morning where absolutely nothing at all had been accomplished.
"Hey, Renarde. Don't mind me, I'm just looking for Roman. I assume he's in the usual place?"
The dog seemed satisfied that the warlock wasn't a threat to the household and wandered past Evren to find one of the many toys Abe Jr hid underneath the couch. Evren wasn't a threat to his family.
"It sounds like Evren's here," Adrian announced, looking warily at his ex-husband. "You promised that you'd behave for the twins' birthday, remember? It's not Evren's fault that Theo is gone. He can't change anything with the coven in a situation this dangerous. You said that you understood all that, Roman. Can I trust you not to pick a fight with Evren? Seriously. You promised."
Adrian and the kids had come over early, partly to help Roman prepare for cake and gifts and also to prevent sparks flying between Roman and Evren. The two men had been in the same room since Theo's departure only a few times, and you could practically physically feel the tension when they were together. Roman's resentment and Evren's guilt hung over every family occasion, and frankly, Adrian was getting sick of it.
"I remember my promise," Roman replied, his voice irritated and cold. Adrian swore that he could hear Roman's teeth grinding from across the room. "It's not his fault that Theo was sent into a war zone. It's not his fault that we aren't even celebrating Winterfest this year. Wanda was so disappointed when I told her, but she understood. A coven that we are all going bankrupt to made this decision. Evren is just a part of it."
Adrian smiled weakly. At least some of the phrases he'd practiced with Roman were sticking. Evren was slowly fading from being the object of Roman's resentment to only being a part of the group Roman hated. It was progress at least.
Abe had been doing his own part in trying to manipulate Roman's mood for the sake of family unity. He and Adrian texted often and were starting to see some improvement.
"Saturnia, honey, have you put your cupcakes in the oven yet? I have the frosting here when they're done cooking."
No rant about warlocks followed, which Adrian took as a good sign. This was going surprisingly well. Roman could put the happiness of their daughters before his anger; this celebration might actually go well.
"Do you think Theo would be mad to know that you're playing his guitar? He doesn't like when I touch his stuff."
Rien struggled to hold her half-brother's guitar in her arms, but she knew that Fiolett's question didn't matter.
"I'm not you, and it's my birthday," Rien pointed out, sticking her tongue out at her half-sister. "You're too young to play guitar and I'm not. It's not like he plays it that often anyway when he's away at school. I'm doing him a favour by making sure it still works and hasn't broken a string or anything. You just stick to your violin."
"Fine. I'm better at it than you ever were anyway."
Fiolett confidently began the piece she was working on for her music exam, drowning out her sibling's efforts with the guitar. Rien and Luci were home more now that their fancy school was closed and tensions were flaring between the siblings. Fiolett didn't attend Princess Zarah's because both of her parents had had miserable experiences with boarding school when they were children. The twins had been enrolled as toddlers in the proper preschool and had attended Princess Zarah's when they were old enough because that was what was expected of future ladies of Queen Maura’s court. Luciana would be a duchess one day, and before becoming a princess, Rien had attended as the spare. Fiolett and her brothers weren't likely going to inherit their father's title, so Evren had insisted that they attend a private school in Twikkii Island where they would return home everyday. Roman and Abe couldn't afford to send any of their other children to boarding school, and they had the same protests as Adrian and Evren. So the eldest three children got to live in Pleasantview and do homework with future monarchs and magical prodigies, while all the other children lived an average life. It hadn't been their parents' intention to create resentment between the siblings, and they did their best to treat every child equally, but it was impossible to keep some resentment from creeping in.
"Evren! You made it! I'm glad you were able to get the time off to visit."
Abe intercepted Evren on his way to the kitchen, drawing the warlock into a fierce hug. It truly was good to see Evren and the presence of a powerful warlock usually made the kids behave better when he was around. Abe understood the pressure the warlock must be under. Sometimes the Pleasantview coven sounded just as expectant as his mother or Wanda could be, but with the magical power to make Evren comply with their demands.
"I told Alicia that I would challenge her leadership if she didn't let me have the day off," Evren laughed. "I don't think she believed me, but she didn't want to chance it. I gave her my endorsement when Master Ewan Maricourt fell, and I can always revoke it if I want. But seriously, things aren't getting worse. They're not exactly going well, but we aren't about to fall to this plague any time soon. Everyone has been working hard. Now that Edana has been expelled from the coven, there's even less bickering between members about what to do with her. We have a singular goal to focus on: defeating this dream illness by any means necessary."
"I hope you guys can fulfill that goal soon," Abe replied. "Has the illness begun to spread outside of Pleasantview yet? Adrian told me that it's progressing slower than everyone expected, so-"
"Evren, my love! You made it! How was the queen? Was Claudia in a festive mood?"
Evren smiled at the sight of his partner.
"She didn't attend today's meeting. One of the royal twins has caught a cold, so she stayed at the castle with the children. There's nothing really to report anyway. The dream illness isn't progressing quickly, but we've made no progress in curing it or making our captive dream demon give up its secrets. We're stumped. I wish I had better news."
"I know that you'll solve it," Adrian assured him, pulling Evren into a gentle kiss. "Maura and I have every faith in your abilities. The coven too, but mostly you."
"Well, as I was just telling Abe, we seem to be holding the line. We're no closer to defeating Xexys, but we're not scared or weak like he wants us to be. No one has even credibly reported seeing Coby Wall. We have some time to catch our breath."
"Do you think that Theo's safer than we expected then?" Abe asked, lowering his voice so that Roman couldn't hear him discussing their son's role in this international nightmare. "If Coby is struggling to spread this plague as quickly as he wants, then maybe it's the same in Jubilant Accosts."
Evren smiled tightly, but it didn't reach his eyes.
"That sounds logical," he lied. Everyone knew that the disease was more potent in Jubilant Accosts and that the country had been ravaged by it. The teenage refugees hadn't painted a hopeful picture of their homeland when questioned.
"Cakes are done! Everyone to the kitchen! Be sure to grab the birthday girls if they're too busy on their phones to hear me."
"Hi, Roman." Evren waved slightly at Roman, trailed by Abe and Adrian. Roman nodded in reply, but didn't glare as obviously as he usually did. It was a Winterfest miracle.
"Luci! Rien! It's time for cake, not Simstagram!"
The girls stood beside their own cakes. Some twins might have to share one cake, but not Roman's girls. He'd been baking all day just to make them feel special on the day they became teens. They were his babies and they deserved whatever they wanted.
Luciana had chosen a castle cake, fitting for a duchess, while Rien had chosen an ocean themed cake, just because. She didn't elaborate besides "wanting to visualize the enemy" which hadn't made any sense to Roman. He'd placed little plastic crabs around the base just in case she was talking about frightening things on the beach. As a toddler, Rien had once gotten her finger pinched by a little crab on the beach of her father's estate, and she hadn't liked crabs since.
"Happy birthday, honey," Adrian said warmly, hugging his daughter before Roman could light the candles on the cakes. "I'm so lucky to be your dad, and you're growing into such a beautiful young woman. I'm so proud of you."
"You too, Luciana. You're going to be a brilliant duchess one day, I just know it. You're so talented with your sports and dancing. You're so special to me and your fathers, both of you."
"Dad!" Luciana whined, pulling away from her father, looking embarrassed. "Don't be so embarrassing! People might see!"
"Through the windows? Who could possibly care if I'm hugging my children? Honestly, you sound like your brother."
"No, Theo's still the most embarrassed child on the planet because of us," Roman laughed, pushing Adrian out of the way to hug their daughters as well. It stung to think of his son and the mortified looks he gave them when he was around his friends. Roman missed that kid beyond what he could put into words. "I love you girls so much, even if I am embarrassing. Everyone here loves you so much. I can't wait to see the young women you become."
"Things will get better, Daddy," Rien promised her father, hoping to be released from his crushing hug. "The voices don't need to tell me that; I know things will get better."
"Rien, it's your birthday, so don't worry about anything other than having a good time," Roman ordered, finally releasing her. "We're all going to eat some cake and have some fun to prepare ourselves for the really dangerous mission we have tonight: dinner at Grandma Elaine's house."
