like who gave this band permission to murder me like this?
(This review was originally posted with an Apple Music link, but since Apple only ever has shitty embeds and Spotify finally came through with a real embed link, here it is again!)
Receiving its world premiere on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show on Apple Music, Twin Atlantic reveal the latest track from their forthcoming album GLA called ‘Ex El.’
Like ‘No Sleep’ and ‘Gold Elephant Cherry Alligator‘ so far, there’s also something reminiscent of TA’s first (mini) album Vivarium on ‘Ex El’ - the loose, sprawling vibes, the grit, the introspection - and there’s even an electro tinge to this track. Verses unfold in brooding, thoughtful fashion against an indie-charged beat akin to Stereophonics’ ‘Dakota’ (but cooler) and pumping ‘hey!’ chants before speeding towards an emotionally-charged chorus, while the rough, almost unhinged howl of frontman Sam McTrusty revels in this dark and fuzzy landscape, like some manic stream-of consciousness.
Three songs in and I’m so ready for this new album… ∩(︶▽︶)∩
GLA is out September 9.
