crisis averted • steve harrington
you had learned long ago to trust steve’s driving abilities with your life. they had scared the hell out of you at first (the first several times, really) but now it was rather thrilling; the way he was so confident and stayed so calm, switching gears and flooring it without a second thought. truthfully it may have been more than the adrenaline you felt every time, that kept you climbing into his beemer without a single hesitation. you knew it was stupid to have such a huge crush on someone you had now considered family. the world was always near the end or in the middle of some crisis, but you just couldn’t help it. steve harrington was much too perfect and much too charming and too damn good at everything. also the hair. and the soft brown eyes… also his smile. okay, so you were pathetically whipped. you knew you had a problem that would not go away, yet you still did nothing about it. part of the problem was the constant looming threat of vecna and hellish monsters, while the other was your brother.
jonathan and steve hated each other. it had been an ongoing feud since sophomore year and you couldn’t quite wrap your head around why. you had initially assumed it was because of nancy wheeler, but lately steve hadn’t even so much as glanced at her. then you assumed maybe it was because jonathan knew that you were head over heels for steve and he was just doing his overprotective brother thing. whatever it was, it made every single crawl or planning session much more difficult… even know, as steve floored it at an impressive eighty miles per hour, jonathan was yelling at him from the back seat beside you.
“jon—“ you attempted to shout over his backseat driving and over dustin screaming about the location pin. you were starting to get a headache just as steve started to yell back.
“i’m trying to just drive, byers! do you want to come up here and take over!?”
“yes, actually i will! pull over.”
steve actually scoffed and you bit back a snort at the expression he gave jonathan but didn’t show him. “you are not driving—“
“no one is pulling over! we’re going to lose the signal!”
you sighed, thankful they had at least listened to dustin. jonathan was damn near sulking now and you actually laughed. you covered your mouth as he glared at you, now biting your lip to muffled the amusement you found in this.
“STOP.” steve hit the breaks so suddenly that your head snapped forward against the back of dustin’s seat.
“shit—!”
jonathan grabbed your shoulders, now looking over you as if you had been attacked. you groaned, tasting blood. your nose stung; when you reached your hand up to massage it, there was blood on your fingers.
“what are we doing!?” steve turned to dustin accusingly, wondering why the hell they had stopped. he glanced backwards and his eyes widened as they landed on you, now trying to plug your nose and stop the bleeding.
“shit!”
“you idiot!”
jonathan was back to screaming at steve. steve was digging through his glove box to try and find something to give you for the bleeding. dustin was screaming at both of them and your head was starting to hurt.
“drive, steve, go!”
steve cursed, passing the roll of gauze back to you as he floored it again, whipping around, his hand now back on you so your face didn’t go flying into anything else. jonathan shoved his hand away and put his arm across your chest. you huffed, holding the gauze up to your nose and feeling extremely stupid.
“hold on!”
you leaned forward this time, grabbing both the seat and dustin, holding your breath as the demogorgan hit the hood of the car and went flying. you cursed, laughing in relief, the adrenaline and smashed nose likely getting to you. jonathan looked mildly concerned that you were laughing, and even more so when steve joined you. it had been a long several days. the adrenaline and lack of sleep was certainly getting to everyone— just you and steve were the only laughing uncontrollably after running down a seven foot monster.
“you weren’t supposed to kill it, you idiot!” dustin smacked steve and he just kept laughing.
finally, steve seemed to find control of himself again and he sighed, running his hand along his face, “are you okay?” he glanced back at you, eyes soft and filled with concern.
you nodded, breathless now more from his gaze than the uncontrollable laughter and adrenaline, “i’m okay… are you?” steve did look exhausted. he kept his eyes on you and for a moment you were the only two in the world, “i’m okay.”
“yes, we’re all okay...” jonathan huffed, throwing his hands up, “what the hell are we supposed to do, now that we’ve killed it?” just as he said it, the demo jumped to his feet and took off at a run again. sprinting on all fours like a full demo/demodog hybrid. you cursed, sinking back against the seat as it tore a doorway through the silo and disappeared back into the upside down.
you shifted slightly, narrowing your eyes at the opening. the car could fit… if they were truly desperate to follow it tonight. “steve…”
steve had the same idea, “do you think the inside of the portal is like a peanut butter bopper?”
“what?”
“what the hell are you talking about?”
unfortunately, you knew exactly what he was talking about. “crispy on the outside, softening as you go further in?”
jonathan turned to look at you, gaping in astonishment, “what?!”
steve’s lip twitched up, “exactly…”
you narrowed your eyes, staring ahead, watching in slow motion as it began to close. the others were now understanding what the two of you had come up with and were shouting and pleading in panic. steve glanced back at you, jaw set, eyes anticipating.
“do it.”
that was all steve needed.
you lurched forward, wrapping your arms around the chair and grabbing a screaming dustin. you closed your eyes, now realizing you may have doomed everyone. your pulse skyrocketed, a panic raising into a roaring in your ears. there was a thud, a scraping against the side of the car and you started screaming. dustin was still screaming, jonathan was yelling expletives and nancy looked like she was going to be sick. they broke through, the mirrors ripped off the side of the beemer and steve pushed the petal down harder. “how’s the signal!?” he didn’t glance at dustin, eyes now locked on the demo increasing its speed.
dustin was grinning, “strong!”
you were rapidly gaining speed, your pulse increasing with it. the demo was still yards ahead, and then vanished suddenly. there was several cries of surprise and more curses, and then nancy was screaming for steve to stop. steve swore, slamming on the breaks, attempting to swerve but failing. the front of the beemer crashed into something solid, your head whipped forward and everything went black.
steve stumbled out of the front seat, ears ringing slightly. he was dizzy, hand on his neck, hand running through his hair. “shit.” he stared at the smashed front end of his car, disappointed but no longer surprised. he turned back to the car and his heart fell. “dustin…” dustin was slumped forward, head on the dashboard, blood trickling from his forehead, “dustin!” he sprinted over to the other side of the car, grabbing him frantically and shaking him. there was a curse from the backseat, then your name, panicked. steve’s blood ran cold, hands still on dustin as his eyes fell on you. slumped over like dustin, head against the window, eyes closed.
“no no no no no no no…” panic filled steve instantly, nausea roaring through him like angry waves. he shook dustin once more, panicking, voice soft, “dustin…. hey. buddy, wake up. dustin…” dustin groaned, eyes fluttering and head rolling to the side. breathing. alive, just not conscious…
steve stumbled backwards, moving to the back seat and nearly shoving jonathan to the side. jonathan was panicking, muttering to himself, cursing, “this is your fault!” jonathan shoved steve and steve turned, furiously, glaring at him. he ignored him, pushing forward to open the door. you nearly fell out as he opened it, steve catching you before you fell. you moaned, head falling against his shoulder as he lifted you up. steve let out a shaky breath at your sign of life, almost laughing at himself for how relieved he was.
jonathan was trailing along beside him, hands on your neck, checking your pulse, too many hands on you as steve moved for the church, “jonathan!” it was nancy this time, scolding, “she’ll be fine. help me with dustin!” dustin. steve swore, nearly dripping you as he tried to glance back at his unconscious friend. he was fine… dustin would be just fine. you both would be.
steve laid you down on a church pew, hand on your forehead to make sure your temperature was normal. dustin was laid on the other end, steve sitting between you to keep a better eye on both. jonathan was pacing, muttering to himself and ignoring nancy’s pleas to stay calm and assurances that you would be fine.
“we shouldn’t have followed it!”
“we went after it to find my sister!”
“and now my sister is injured and unconscious! where theres no medical supplies and no help!”
“jonathan! it was her idea! she’s just knocked out! she’ll be perfectly fine!”
“how do you possibly know that, nancy!? you don’t actually know everything, you know!”
“will you two please just shut up? go do that outside, or something. that won’t help anything…” steve was too tired to raise his voice and argue. he let his head fall in his hands, exhaling slowly, forcing himself to stay calm.
“don’t tell me to shut up, harrington!”
“byers!” steve stood to his feet, “don’t test me right now, man, alright? whatever the hell your problem with me is, it’s time for you to get over it! it’s not my goddamn fault you only started remembering your sister when she started getting close to me.”
jonathan lunged forward and nancy grabbed him, snapping at him to stop being an idiot. there was another groan and and both boys froze. you moved to sit up, and both pairs of hands were on you. you pushed jonathan off, squinting against your blaring headache. you groaned, letting your head fall backwards. “easy…” steve held your shoulders gently, hand on the side of your face, eyes soft with concern and anxiety, “you okay?” you groaned again, squinting through one eye, trying to nod your head. the slightest movement hurt and made you dizzy.
“hey…” jonathan had stopped panicking and would— reluctantly— apologize to steve later. steve knelt in front of you, wincing slightly, “look at me…” you did, expression soft. steve’s breath caught at your pinhole pupils, “shit… i think you have a concussion…” you laughed weakly, “i feel like i have a concussion…” steve smiled faintly, “try not to move too much… it’s best to just sit still.”
“you would know wouldn’t you?”
steve actually laughed at this, “yeah…. why don’t you just leave the head injuries to me?”
you smiled, glancing slowly over to dustin, “we figured it was time we took some of the beatings… only seemed fair…”
steve cracked a smile, “i think you both should leave the beatings to me. i’m used to them by now...” his voice was playful, but you never found his constant injuries funny. steve could tell, the way your smile vanished, “hey— i’m kidding… you scared the hell out of me, you know…” steve glanced over to dustin, who was now opening his eyes with a groan.
“dustin…” you moved, forgetting your orders not to. “hey…” steve helped him sit up slowly, holding him not as close as he did with you.
dustin spit out blood, face scrunched up in pain, “shit…” he rubbed his forehead, the blood now drying, sticking between his fingers. “god damn it…” he groaned again, closing his eyes and letting his head fall against the back of the pew. “easy, henderson… you clunked your head pretty hard.”
“yeah, no shit.”
dustin huffed, looking at steve like he was a colossal idiot. dustin shifted to look at you, squinting slightly. you nodded to him, knowing his dazed, blurry expression reflected your own. you snorted then; suddenly so thoroughly amused that you had both been injured the same way in a situation that wasn’t even exciting and hadn’t involved monsters. dustin choked out a laugh, now doubling over and almost falling off the pew. you gasped, reaching out to catch him and only making yourself dizzier. steve just stared between the two of you, horrified and alarmed and maybe slightly amused. “my god, you both need to lie down…” he shook his head, holding back laughter. dustin slumped over, collapsing onto the pew with another groan between the laughter.
your head throbbed, surroundings only slightly blurry as you turned back to steve, “is it normal to see two of you?” steve sighed and turned back to you, “i think you’ll be going to the hospital as soon as we’re out of here. both of you… i think both of you are delusional…”
you narrowed your eyes, “i’m not complaining. two of you to look at is even better than one…” steve’s eyebrow quirked up and he eyed you, “oh, is that so?” you nodded, shifting forward with a wince, “i feel so weird…” you moved to stand up and barely heard jonathan caution a warning. the church started spinning, and you were swaying. steve’s arms were around you in an instant, catching you as you started to fall forward. you gasped in a laugh, exhaling shakily. you tilted your head just slightly, meeting steve’s soft gaze.
the corner of his mouth quirked up and he lowered his voice, “still seeing two of me?” you hummed, waiting for the church to stop spinning so you could decide. steve came into focus as you narrowed your eyes, “unfortunately not.” you pouted just slightly, realizing just how close he was to you.
dustin was standing now, nancy and jonathan both following behind him with outstretched arms, both looking anxious. he was reaching for the radio. he held it up, once again searching for a signal. you shifted your gaze just slightly, watching jonathan and nancy follow him outside.
your lip twitched up just slightly as you turned back to steve. you were pressed right up against his chest, his arms still around you, caging you in and being about the only thing keeping you standing. steve put a thumb on your temple, brushing a streak of blood away, “we really need to get you to a hospital… dustin too. we’ll never find holly now.” his thumb felt hot against your skin and you instinctively leaned into his touch. steve’s breath caught and he tensed for just a moment. he said your name softly, almost cautioning.
it was probably the concussion, but it felt like you were finally thinking clearly. he was holding you so closely, arms locked around you so firm and securely, looking at you with concern and something else. the signs had been there all along. even when you had been hung up over him and hanging onto his every movement for the last year. you leaned in before he did. steve’s lips brushing against yours made your head spin even more than the concussion and then you were melting into him.
the church and the upside down vanished, and it was just you pressed up against him. his arms were even tighter around you, feeling your knees growing weak from something much stronger than the head injury. you only pulled away when you ran out of breath, the smallest tear running down your cheek in relief.
“it’s about damn time, byers…” steve smirked softly, brushing your cheek with his thumb and stealing one more kiss.
asshole. he could have kissed you any time he damn well wanted to and the outcome would have been the same…
you melted into him again and only pulled back when the church doors creaked open. “it’s hopper! we got hopper! he’s alive! he’s down—“
you glanced over your shoulder, still wrapped up in steve, still breathless and standing much too close. jonathan looked between the two of you with something between disappointment and disproval. nancy had the faintest smirk on her face, shaking her head slightly. and dustin threw his hands up, “finally, you two! i was starting to think it would never happen…”
truthfully, so were you. all it took was a smack on the head and you had a concussion to thank for making you delirious enough to finally have the courage to kiss him.
