I came home for Easter weekend, and kicked it off by going with Mum, Hannah, Helen, and Mum/Hannah's friend Jen (from work), to see the film 'Hidden Figures' - which, in a word, I thought was excellent. It reaffirmed my faith in good old-fashioned film making; no over-reliance on special effects or other paraphernalia, simply hitting the sweet spot plot-wise - the right amount of subtle and simple; I feel like it's been an age since a film has fully satisfied me like this. I thought the cast was strong across the board, although towards the end I realised that the charming, slick gentleman portraying John Glen had also played a very disturbed youth in Drillbit Taylor, which distracted me somewhat! There were understandably poignant moments throughout - given the content of the true events the film is based on - but it was managed tastefully, and in a way that meant you didn't feel the film was constantly screaming the obvious at you. But despite this, the overriding emotion is joy, and I got a lot of enjoyment from watching it. It's the best film I've seen in a cinema for a long time...scratch that, best film I've seen anywhere, and I'm not one to wax lyrical, but this is my movie recommendation of the year. So now that you've read the best blog you will read this year, go see the best film of the year.
