Prompt #52

"Daddy?" The little girl asked her father. "How did you and mommy meet?"

The ex-hero and ex-villain's eyes widened as they looked at each other before stealing a glance at the child.

A small smile slipped onto their lips as they're eyes met and they both remembered that day 5 years ago when the hero and the villain met. The villain's smile widened when he remembered the hero's innocent eyes as she attempted to stab him, only to fail and stab the brick wall next to him.

"You missed, darlin" the villain sneered as he thrusted the blade into her leg and punched her square in the jaw.

The hero felt the light die from her body as she started passing out, yelling "I swear on my own grave villain, I will capture you!"

And from that fateful day 5 years ago they spent the next 5 years playing an unstoppable game of cat and mouse, constantly hunting each other down and trying to kill each other.

And the ex-hero did keep her promise. She had captured him, and she captured his heart as well. She captured him and made him fall so far in love that he stopped being a villain and started a family with her.

"Daddy?" The little girl asked, making the ex-hero and the ex-villain fall out of their trance of going down memory lane.

"Sorry hun" the ex-villain smiled sweetly.

"How did you and mommy meet?" The child asked again, curious.

"Well" the ex-hero started, setting down a plate of pancakes down in front of the ex-villain and her child. "You're father and I bumped into each other in a coffee shop and it was love at first sight. "

"Yeah" the ex-villain grinned as he took a sip of his coffee. "That's exactly how it went. "

No fuck you guys im talking about Incipient

My idea of the story featuring the superhero turning evil and leading a team of supervillains spawned six new characters, most of whom are still in the early planning stages. But it's Incipient and Sweet Mary that (predictably) captured my attention the most. A love story between two mentally unstable psychotics? I am all over that shit.

And (even more predictably) out of the two, Incipient is the one who grasped me the most. I mean he's the male so it was obviously going to be him I don't think I've discussed my inability to truly connect with female character extensively but I'm pretty sure people will have noticed that when it comes to favourites, 99% of the time I go for the guys (Roxy in Homestuck being the only exception I can name off the top of my head). 

Slater is in his early thirties, but it's not clear how old. His past is foggy and he's not the talkative type meaning a lot of it never gets revealed. He has connections with some kind of cult, but what the cult is and what their intentions are are unknown. He has ritualistic scars on his torso he flaunts, but hides the scars on his hands under gloves. Where he's from, if 'Slater Joe' is his real name, if he has any family, what his childhood was like, are all unknown. He's quiet and secretive and utterly insane.

He's prone to violence and has little to no impulse control. He isn't especially childish, but he's not very intelligent and he's easily provoked. He's fairly sadistic- he's not as bad as Sweet Mary but that's not saying much- and is known to indulge in cannibalism. His superpower is pyrokinesis and he loves it. He will always seek out revenge.

In daily life he tends to stick to routines and patterns, he has ways of doing things that he hates to break away from even if there are quicker or easier ways of doing them. He gets upset if people try to push him into changing the ways he does things. While in-costume as 'Incipient' he's a never ending fountain of confidence, outside of that he's even quieter and more introverted and frequently suffers panic attacks. He spends most of his time in the home he shares with Sweet Mary (AKA Honey Porter) and is known to stay in bed for days. He's impatient and moody and extremely anti-social, with very little tolerance for people as a whole. Outside of Honey he doesn't have anyone he'd even consider a friend. He can barely stand the people in his team.

There's a very clear line between Incipient and Slater. They're not split personalities, but he's definitely playing a character when he's wearing the gas-mask. Incipient is capable of handling people and crowds, he's confident, he's manic, he's more talkative and able to be funny and sarcastic. Slater is quiet, cold, suffers from pretty strong social anxiety, is subdued but volatile, and is incapable of anything even approaching humour. Incipient very much consists of traits Slater would like to be, but can't. 

One of Slater's few saving graces is his relationship with Honey/Sweet Mary. The two originally met through their positions as supervillains; Sweet Mary fell for Incipient's destructiveness and pursued him out of costume. Against the odds they fell in love pretty quickly, and Slater depends on Honey quite heavily. They live together because he can't handle living alone for extended periods of time, and she looks after him to a large extent. She's a ditzy, childish, happy-go-lucky psychopath but she ends up being the one in charge most of the time because Slater is mentally unable to care for himself. But she needs him too, because she needs the support and the comfort and the loyalty. It's a very co-dependant relationship, but Slater would suffer the most if he didn't have Honey rather than vise-versa.

But he adores her. Wouldn't harm a hair on her head. Lives and breathes for her. Would die for her- and ultimately does, in an attempt to protect her from Atlas' murder spree. His world starts and ends with Honey.

Not healthy, maybe, but it gives him a reason to get up in the morning.

Slater turned out to probably be the darkest character in the story. He ended up a whole lot more real than the others when originally I was expecting something ridiculous and like a caricature. But I think having the more realistic psychology forced into a cartoony context makes the ending twist more believable. And having him be a loud bouncy maniac who spends his whole time drenched in blood would have been tedious and without much room for development. Too DeviantArt. 

I like Incipient a whole lot.

im calling the ex-hero Atlas i give up

its already been used but i honestly cant find anything i like more and it fits him and the Atlas being the Titan who held up the world is perfect for his characterisation?? like he quit being a superhero because he felt he was the only one there supporting so much of humanity and the pressure drove him insane and imigary of him holding up the Earth is perfect for him so yea
