♖ for a childhood headcanon

Kai's favorite books as a little girl were Lord of the Rings. She had the trilogy in paperback that she had kept hidden away with her things as a new recruit in the Reds. It was a challenge for her to read, given her limited schooling, but they got easier every time she finished them.

Send for a story--

Nerves don't control you as a cop until you're stuck in a room with a psychologist and doctor. Both the same person, mind you. With her stern gaze watching Adam from behind her glasses, the officer sat there in discomfort, dressed to the nines within his dress blues, rank glistening upon his chest.

Still, the blonde doctor was adamant. Hands resting in her lap, legs crossed, she never let her gaze lift her as she continuously bombarded him with questions... as if the third degree could get any more weirder...

        "Have you ever killed a man?"

        "Only if I need to, m'am."

        "Are you afraid of me, Officer?"

        "I don't understand why I should be, m'am."

"You don't know why? Megan learned the    majority of any surgery techniques from    me. You make my little girl cry, hurt her    in any way-- I want you to know that I'll    have you unmanned before you could ever think of it."

         "Dr. Reed, I--"

"Her father isn't here to give you-- what you         kids call 'the low-down' of how you're          going to treat our little girl, Officer--"

          "--Commander..."

An uncomfortable shuffle as he pressed his glasses back up the bridge of his nose. Cassandra was steaming from his interruption, but all he did was correct her. Then again, he was hoping this didn't make him look like a bad guy for the first time meeting her mother... right?

Yet, a sound of another clearing their throat was not what washed away his unease, it was the sight that held it. A sight that would burn into the back of his mind labeled under "unique beauty."

Forever in white, the lavished, strapless dress hugged the doctor's curves so nicely. It was as if he had been awaiting the sight of his prom date the way his heart skipped beats. But it all brought a smile to his face, ignoring the fact that he had almost tripped over his own dog that laid at his feet-- twice. 

With her hair down, she looked like an entirely different woman. Although it was salvation away from her mother, it was the freckled smile that picked him back up. It was always that freckled smile that forever picked him back up.

Upon leaving, Megan squeezed Adam's arm, lips twisting as she craned her head upward to face him.

"You're not afraid of my mom... are you?"

               "No-- No. She didn't scare me once." Maybe. Intimidated, really. God only knew how her father was.

A text should have brought some relief, but it doesn't. Instead, she bites back the sting of tears (only he can make her cry purely out of frustration; he has that hold on her), and quickly sends a text in reply.
