Topic: Bootlegging
The idea of copying a work and re-selling it as the original. Created a book on my experience with bootlegging and my relationship with it. I’m into the front cover and the back cover. Hopefully I’ll push this experimental typography more in the future.
The Young Billionaires Magazine
Of course the magazine was interested in the Young Billionaires life style. The magazine wanted a small window into the Young Billionaires life; preferably a window with soft furnishings and maybe a gold plated swimming pool. The magazine got a dirty draughty industrial building with ferns and a van.
The magazine had expected daft furniture not tatty old wooden things covered in fluorescent coloured knitted patchwork blankets. “Help yourself to coffee” the Young Billionaire Woman said. The Magazine people looked into a tatty ex office with cheap plastic kettle, secondhand fridge freezer and no water source. No crystal filtered chrome percolator. INSTANT COFFEE.
One of the magazine people had a moment of bright thinking “expensive clothing”... they peered into the solar powered van for clothing storage. Inside was an old heavy grey chest. The magazine people looked at each other glumly. One noticed a flash of glitter and eyes widely, got excited. Aggressively Comfortable sweaters were inside.
The Young Billionaire smiled triumphantly. Lets have our ‘coffee’ in the garden. The magazine people imagined old tatty plastic pots with dull ferns an old wooden bench and wild plantlings in the cracks. They went through a small door at the back of the industrial building into a bright sunny day. A bright sunny smallish space out the back with large delicate Italian terracotta. Stems with Bay leaf pompoms. Tropical multicoloured flowering. Walls of green and delicate pinks. Flourishing yellow and green variegated bushes. And tented, squishy soft furnished, loungers. A modest sculpture of diving blue whales splashing with water sprinklings.

Everybody’s Leader
Everybody wants to rule the world; the green aliens noted. But what would happen if just an anybody ruled the Earth.
The green aliens vast bulbous purple super cruiser halted, floating, just above the house of one soon to be Leader. The house in a smarter part of a northern town in the north of England. The worlds media of course turned up. The vast purple globular space cruiser had been there for two days. There was no sign of any green aliens. When the people knocked on the door of the smart house, no one answered. The curtains were closed for both of the days.
On the morning of the third day the Leader sheepishly opened the front door to hundreds of cameras filling the small street of nice houses. The heads of a twenty year old Leader's parents peered from behind the curtains in the front windows. “erm, i'm afraid I’m your new leader" a small voice told the world.
The world blinked and every single human looked at their companions disbelieving; they looked back to their various sized televisions. A small girl called from some shoulders “prove it". The Leader looked up to the vast space ship, looked back at the world. “no more war". The massive purple spaceship changed colour. Clouds gathered around it’s great hulk, the clouds shimmered with an intense aqua marine. Every tank, fighter plane, gun, knife, warship and experimental weapon turned a dusty rust colour becoming useless. Most of the world hadn’t observed this. Slowly pinged messages clattered from all the smartphones of planet earth. The news about the weapons was spreading.
An encampment grew in the Leaders nice street. All the worlds media were making themselves comfortable, quietly. There was little chatting. There was little info. Only a giant purple alien spaceship and the Leader. The worlds leaders came to see the new Leader of planet Earth. They asked questions about the aliens that they assumed had visited. The Leader had no answer for them, they had seen no aliens. Only a small voice in the back of the Leader’s head had convinced them. The media had this small morsel to report.
Over time things got better on planet Earth. The brown children were eating as well as every child and new highways were being built around them. Nice houses everywhere. Organic food, only organic food. Solar panels in the hot places. Clean water for everyone. Climate change halted. All done without help from the purple spaceship. The schools became the best buildings, experimental buildings; lots of ideas for enriching places and the best equipment. Still plenty of billionaires. Threats of alien prison time for trash leavers. Animal happiness came third; no more misery, the natural life cycles of the livestock respected. Abusive humans skin starts itching whenever they are inclined, they don’t want to know what happens if they give in to the violent ape. Fish allowed to flourish in their waters.
The green aliens looked amused with their experiment. They watched from far far away. The vast purple super spaceship was not real. A trick with light. A trick that in the future disappeared one morning.

The Twenty First Century Woman, part 2
Now seventy first century Woman had to secretly make her own fun time. When the seventy first century people had said they knew nothing of smoking, she kept quiet about alcohol. Fruits and sugars were being brewed in sterile equipment on the galactic light ship; at least the food is good. She hadn’t even seen Earth yet, though the images were utterly unrecognizable. They were due to cycle Earth soon and the Twenty First Century Woman was thirsty for some yellow sun, blue sky and little fluffy clouds.
The Woman asked for old-time fruity flavourings and a strange triangular shaped receptacle at the end of a thin straight elongation with a circular foot. The seventy first century people were intrigued… perhaps this twenty first century woman was worthy of more scientific interest. A ‘harmless’ scan of her palatial quarters was made. It found nothing unusual. In fact it found very little. No sign of the equipment that had been requested. And no sign of the triangular long footed receptacle. Just some fruit peelings and an old suit of twenty first century armour. This twitched a scientific nerve in the seventy first century people. Their internal ship scanners searched the whole ship for the sterile equipment and extra scanning for the unusual receptacle. Nothing.
The Twenty First Century Woman had full access to the knowledge of her new companions including their galactic light spaceship.
Of course the privacy of the people was supreme. But an exception could be made for their older century guest. A close eye was kept on the Woman’s visitations around the light ship. The Woman would visit the laboratory areas asking about the abundant experimenting. The Woman went into the dark matter reactor generators, asking about the workings of the galactic power systems. Then, bizarrely, the Woman entered into a maintenance crawl space near the internal sensory systems. The Woman was in there for a short time then went for lunch with a slight stumble.
The seventy first century people entered the sensor equipment crawl space, but found nothing unusual. This Twenty First Century Woman was turning out to be an interesting new specimen.
Though the seventy first century people no longer have a need for survival instincts, they had guile enough to realise the Woman was hiding something from them. They searched every small space around the internal sensor system. Found nothing. The secret wondering, about the Woman, was novelty for the future people. The Woman had noticed the extra interest in her and adjusted her thinking. The Woman found purpose in eluding the future people. She found new things to hide from the internal sensors of the great galactic light ship.

I’m making an experimental book on bootlegging. This page is about m experience in growing up and traveling to different countries, and seeing how people treat the idea of bootlegging.
BLOG POST : FIVE
And here if my final experimental book!
It was...a process. Unfortunately in the end I did not have time to make a box for it like I had initially planned, so it was a last minute decision to add a ribbon to keep it bound. I personally don’t prefer this on my final piece and will probably remove it and make a box for it when it is returned to me.
The theme is related to springtime and faeries. The book is called “La Primavera”, inspired by song with the same name that was inspired by Botticelli’s painting, Primavera. I adore fantasy and love the aesthetic of fairytales, and in this style of book I thought it would be neat to ‘take a peak’ in the world of a springtime fairytale.

I decided later that I didn’t like my initial idea of the zodiac book, and instead wanted to do something much more experimental (probably not a good idea since i was already handing in my book a week late). One book that caught my eye when Reg brought it into class was a tunnel book, so I decided to make one myself.
I looked online for the tunnel book tutorials since i’ve always been interested in a more artistic approach that would require more use of my hands.
Tunnel book tutorial
This was pretty difficult to do since I needed to gather matching images to fit the scene, and to place them appropriately so that each image would show. I had the most trouble of folding the attached paper and making it even (later I realized that a lighter weighted paper would be best to not only fold but to keep it flat.
My biggest concern was hand cutting everything---I got major cramps in my hands afterwards, but it was worth it.
This was something I did not want to mess up on so I first created a whole black and white version. My print ink was running out, too, so this step was important.
BLOG POST : THREE
Experimental Book
I wanted to go in an experimental direction for this project. I decided to make my book look more sculptural with the theme being about zodiac.
Here are the resources I used for inspiration and tutorials:
Accordion book tutorial
Example 1
Example 2
The theme is to have one side with positive traits about the zodiac signs and the other side with negative traits.
First i did a practice booklet and then continued on making more prints. I had difficulty with making a tunnel book that required no gluing since the idea was to make it interactive and having the user fold it backwards to learn the ‘darker’ side of the zodiac.
I also wanted to add something special by placing it in a box. I’ve used balsa wood in the past to make boxes so this wasn’t too hard for me. I struggled with coating it with paper, though.
