Reverb-soaked guitars dominate the sound of Baltimore, Maryland's The Smashing Times. This might be my favorite Baltimore band since Expert Alterations...whose sound is not that dissimilar (aside from the reverb).

The Smashing Times can recall bands as like The Pastels (listen to those vocals), Franky Flowers, and Crystal Stilts. And I noticed that Philip Sutton (Pale Lights) is a supporter as well.

This is being released by Painter Man Records. In fact, their Big Cartel website has a limited purple vinyl version.

Micah and I saw Rays open up for Expert Alterations a couple of years ago.  Their set was short, but I remember wanting more.  Here it is (or has been...this is a couple of months old), released by Trouble in Mind.

Rays are a Bay Area band.  They really sound like they were made for the late 1970s/early 80s.  There is just a post-punk/synth/jangle sound that could fit in on the Ork Records label.  The guitar/rhythm section reminds me a little of Glenn Mercer’s band Wake Ooloo.  Finally, there is a definite Velvet Underground and Flying Nun vibe at work here.
