Experimental Imagery - Non Images 

The theme I have chosen for my project is identity. The first image represents personal identity and how without this particular piece of plastic with information on it your identity is automatically lost. The second and third images are of famous NZ landmarks (L&P bottle and the carrot at Ohakune) I have removed the landmarks from the photos to show the audience that without these particular icons in each city the city becomes instantly just another dull city with no real significance. The fourth image is of Silver ferns( Maria Tutaia )vs Diamonds. I have removed all the logos/names from their dresses which instantly takes away their identity and makes them just another netball team playing. I think that the idea of identity is communicated well through these four images as it shows identity through sports, location and personal identification. The main point I hope the images communicate is that without these famous icons we all as individuals instantly become nothing.

For the erasing image my intention was to heavily distort several images of famous people of various backgrounds for the sole purpose of attempting to make them unrecognisable and to destroy the history and story in the pictures. In addition to distorting them I degraded the newer images to match the older ones and create a sense of series. The large variance in what some of the people in each image represent again is to try take away from and erase importance from the other images in the series whether through making some seem irrelevant, or unimportant it is my intention that these images take away from each other and my hope is that for different people It will be different pictures that achieve this.

My method for creating these images was to as simplistically as possible make the people in the images unrecognisable and to start I only distorted their faces but this did not produce the desired effect, because of this I began to distort the entire body of each subject and found this was significantly more effective.

My randomized image has been processed through grid based transformations which were randomised by assigning each section a number and using a random number sequence generator to decided how they would be re-arranged. After this using an identical process to decide the path I used the liquify tool to further distort the rearranged image. My intention was to use a rigid and ordered methodology exemplified by my chosen picture in order to create a chaotic and non-sensical final result. 

The method I used required a time consuming approach of cutting the image into 25 individual and equally sized smaller sections. After this they were all given a number according to their position with 1 in the top left corner and 25 in the bottom right and then the order was randomised. The original sections were moved to their new positions based on the order that the sequence generator gave out. After this the initially randomised image is finished.

Expanding on my previous method and to give the final result a slightly more organic feel I decided I would allow the number generator to produce a sequence of 15 numbers of sections that I would create a line between while trying to have the line touch every square at least once. After the line was complete I ran the liquify tool over the line once creating the significantly distorted final image.

My Body images are composed of male silhouettes, female silhouettes and silhouettes that are a mix of both in some way. My primary design intention was to slowly produce a spectrum of work that started in clearly defined and made it's way towards completely unrecognisable. Using this method I was able to create several works that are difficult to distinguish between male and female as they have parts from both the original model pictures.

Using silhouettes as one of my primary tools in some of the images allowed me better control of what a viewer is able to use to define details about the figures. This is especially true for the images where I have combined aspects of both models to create whole figures. As silhouettes I was able to severly distort the images so they would fit together better making them seamless and easier to accept as human figures at first glance.

The entirety of this series apart from the most severe distortions play on perception of gender in some way. Putting the original models in the series unedited allows me to set controlled precidents of what kind of silhouette each gender has and I feels this helps the sections that defy or mix these gender precidents. With these images I wanted to heavily push the idea that regardless of what kind of gender mix is present that these figures can still be easily defined as human silhouettes.

The final images I created do not even give defined silhouettes for the viewer and generally are completely inhuman. My intention with these images in particular is to further push the viewer to understand what kind of distortions take away what makes a figure human. It is also intentional that these distortions do not play off gender.

Experimental Imagery Summative: Uncontrolled Image 2

Working on the developed ideas on uncontrolled images I thought about what would happen if I flipped the idea around, with me creating part of an image and letting others finish the image as an uncontrolled image. This went better than I would have thought, as one of the images I started to make (city) I had an image in my mind of hat it would look like and it game out pretty different while the other sort of matched what I would have done to complete it. It also highlighted, to me at least, the influence of having something on a canvas when working and how that influences your work from there. Because people could have crossed out everything, but they went and coloured the pictures in and add little things in places. This also showed me how valuable collaboration could be in image creation.

Experimental Imagery Summative: Uncontrolled Image 1

For this series of images, I expanded on the ideas of my previous uncontrolled image through the use of digital technology and colour. In my previous series I worked with only lines to create an image, with this I added colour and found that colour gives you much more ability to shape the image from the lines previously given. Also redoing this image, it showed me that when asking people to add to the drawing everybody tends to draw toward the free space available, making it a lot harder to incorporate all the lines. Drawing digitally also allowed for difference in the lines created as people could choose how thick or thin their line could be. When drawing over the lines, I tried to incorporate them as much as possible. I used the some of the lines as a starting point for an idea for the image then incorporate the rest of the lines into that idea. I believe these images helped me better and more quickly make create ideas and build images from them.

Experimental Imagery Summative: Non-Images

These images are a development on my previous non-images that were poems with repetitive words taken out. I wanted to take that censor like approach and apply it to actual documents, like governments use it to hide things from the public. So above is a couple of pages of the supposedly leaked TPP deal which I thought would be a good document to use because of the nature of the deal being highly secretive and shielded from public view. The pages I censored spoke a lot about negative reasons about why the deal had not gone through, so I censored the pages as if I wanted the the deal to look good only leaving a nice clean image as if all was fine. I like how the meaning of a page can be turned completely against itself through some censorship and it shows how much control people can have over how others can see things. This also showed me that image creation doesn’t necessarily have to start with nothing but can be reworked from other images.

to create these images we splatted yoghurt on a window and took a photo of it. We then used the form of the yoghurt splat as a shape to illustrate a scene onto the background scene.

It was a strange yet rewarding experience not having control over the final illustrations form, It was a process that required me to think creatively and unconventionally.
