#Explorecircus: Meet our trainer Kelsey
Today in our continuing series exploring the Flipside Circus family, we’re introducing Kelsey Adams, a Bachelor of Psychological Science student and Flipside Circus trainer.
How long have you been involved in circus arts for? 4 years
Tell us about the moment that first inspired you to start circus classes. I first saw Cirque du Soleil’s Varekai when it came to Brisbane and was so inspired by their physicality, the human connection and the way they told a story so beautifully. I was already doing gymnastics but circus seemed to mean so much more, it was so much more artistic and meaningful. I fell in love and it never went away.
What is your favourite apparatus to teach? Flying trapeze, but I also love acrobalance.
What is the best thing circus has taught you? So many things! Circus has taught me how to get up and keep going and keep trying my tricks, that pain is only temporary, that anything is possible if you want to create something… But I think the most important thing is that truly awe-inspiring things can be done when we work together.
Your funniest circus moment is… There’s a moment in everybody’s juggling career when they hit themselves in the face with a ball. It’s always worth a giggle.
Who or what inspires you the most? This is going to sound cheesy but within circus, the people who inspire me the most are my fellow trainers and performers. The people I know in the Brisbane and wider Australian circus community are doing amazing things – incredible performances and heartwarming outreach projects. It reminds me that we needn’t look any further than our backyard to be inspired to amazing things.
What else do you get up to when you’re not at Flipside? I’m about to finish my Bachelor of Psychological Science, so I’ll be doing an honours research project for that in 2016. I like to read and I cook a lot at home. I also really enjoy going out to see shows – music, poetry, circus, cabaret, theatre. Oh, and I have a little herb garden in my back yard.
