Main Ridge Forest Reserve in Tobago: The Oldest in History
Advancement is the backbone of civilization, but it also has its downsides. Nature lost a considerable part of its wonderful reserves, which once echoed the idyllic visions of “God’s Eden”, since the wheels of progress picked up speed. To prevent more damage some organisations like UNESCO came forward with the determination of conserving Nature. But, even before UNESCO was incepted, the government of Tobago thought of protecting one of its precious possessions, the Main Ridge Forest, as early as 1776 and good gracious it did! Today the lush rainforest stands as a thriving earthly representation of a Speilbergian “Lost World”, except the dinosaurs of course. However, the forest houses their dwarfed successors in the form of an exotic species of reptile called the ocellated gecko. Besides, it is also the habitat of sixteen species of the most elusive of mammals and two hundred and ten species of birds, including the Sabrewing Hummingbird.
If you are a hearty explorer, don’t miss the opportunity of hiking through the forest trails that elevates up to 600 meters, with the canopy of evergreen trees providing a protective roof overhead throughout your journey. A truly Amazonian experience, reminiscent of the rare vistas of the wild nature caught in Attenborough’s wildlife show, Birds’ of Paradise.
