Google Pledges $3 Million to Singularity University to Make Graduate Studies Program Free of Charge

Google, a long-time supporter of Singularity University (SU), has agreed to a two-year, $3 million contribution to SU's flagship Graduate Studies Program (GSP). Google will become the program's title sponsor and ensure all successful direct applicants get the chance to attend free of charge.

XMED: Retrospective Part II

So much sweet tech here, it was like going to our decade’s version of the 1940’s World Fair.  All of the company’s largest partnes were there (Aldebaran, Deloitte, 3D systems, Suitable Technologies, etc) along with SU’s spinoff company Scandu and a ton of new companies that I didn’t even know of like BioLucid (which does some incredible work with VR) and MyDigitalHealth Network (a company founded on revolutionizing patient-doctor relationships through mobile technology).

I’m really glad I got to go to this event because there’s a lot of companies that are doing fantastic and interesting work that I never would have heard about had I not been given the opportunity.

XMED: Retrospective Part I

So one of the curious things is that in college, I remember being vastly interested in the future of health care technology.  UBC’s robotic division had an open house and were showing off a robotic arm that could perform delicate complicated tasks with 6 degrees of freedom.  To demonstrate their robot, they had it doing a mundane task like folding a bed spread but I loved it. It was completely enthralling and even though I decided to major in Cognitive Science/ Sociology I did my best to follow the team through school and learn how robotics and health care might overlap.  

Five years later, in early November, when Singularity University needed additional tech support to help staff their event website for XMED (a futuristic five day conference in San Diego dedicated to showcasing the future of health care technology) and I immediately leapt at the chance to go.  Thankfully the company agreed and it was here that I was sent on my first company trip to sunny southern california.  The event took place at the extremely luxurious Hotel Del Coronado (seriously, Google it, it’s a freaking dream) and in addition to running tech support I also helped man the mobile innovation lab booth.

Again, as a newcomer, words fail to describe how awesome an event this was to work at.  Remember when I compared GSP as Singularity University’s Avengers initiative?  Well, XMED is like a future Comic Con except instead of costumed characters, you have doctors, Ph.D graduates, business entrepreneurs and health care revolutionists gathering under one roof to learn how medical technology is rapidly improving in this coming age.
