From New Home Purchase to Renovating into Something Special
Well, here it is - the middle of winter, and the middle of our indoor renovations. Coming home to dropcloths and paint fumes isn’t too comforting. But if the results are anything close to our fantastic exterior remodel that was completed this summer, it’ll be worth it.It’s a bit frustrating!
The house looks so great from the outside, people are already wanting to comeover and enjoy the house. I tell them to wait for the inside to get done too, unless they want to party on the roof. Not the best idea in February. A lot of people have been asking me about the details of the exterior. Here’s what we ended up going with: an aluminum-paneled roof, a partial garden terrace roof, copper gutters, stone siding accents, and a copper bay window accent. Our old house in Windsor had the standard asphalt shingles. We wanted to step it up a bit for our new house. Our family’s here to stay. We figured we’d save ourselves the hassle of getting a new roof built 15 years down the road.
We found an aluminum paneling pattern whose angled lines draw the eye in and tie the whole place together. It’s amazing what roof designers can do. It’s lucky that Jeff and I had our minds made up on stone siding when we did. For us, it was a fairly simple choice - nothing else even came close to the permanent and contemporary look. As it turns out, our siding installation was finished right as it started to get cold. It takes a lot of time to install, so be sure to budget plenty of time.
The real ace up our sleeves has been, of all things, our eavestroughs. Subdued, yet seen through the whole of the house, they’re the perfect place to add a bit of boldness to your roof design. We went with copper. The bright, shining reddish-gold we have now will turn into a bold, stately green in a few decades – all while being the best gutters money can buy.
These were the biggest parts of our design game plan. I’ll get into more detail about each one later on. Put it all together and you’ve got a stunning picture of a house that gets everybody asking when the inside will be ready. Only a few months more, guys!
