Extremely #Piaget - The Making-Of
In 1967, Piaget started making watches with dials made of colored hard stones set in abstract, sculptural bracelet designs, a revolutionary idea that has since become enigmatic of the cultural freedom and extravagance during the 1970’s. Those daringly bold jeweled watches serve as inspiration for Piaget’s newest high jewelry collection for the Biennale des Antiquaires this September, aptly named Extremely Piaget.

An ode to the brand’s iconic watches and cuff bracelets designed by Jean-Claude Gueit, the new collection features 37 watches and 88 pieces of jewelry invigorated with the asymmetrical compositions and riot of color inherent of Piaget’s original designs. Watches and jewelry blend together in almost psychedelic fashion as vibrant hard stones collide and combine in fluid works of goldsmithing art. Vivid turquoise plays off the soft hue of pink opals in one wide cuff while striking blue of lapis lazuli looks extra cool set against icy diamonds and white gold in a bracelet of interlocking loops.

Juxtaposing the opaqueness of the hard stones, the collection’s other half is Extremely Sparkling, marked by a glittering profusion of marquise-cut diamonds. Also celebrated in this scintillating portion of the collection is a variety of different diamond settings, including the ‘jupon’, or petticoat setting, first developed in the 1960s. A ring demonstrates the fluidity of the jupon setting as baguette-cut diamonds are arranged in concentric circles and appear to seamlessly sparkly together like fabric.

With a modern 21st century twist, Extremely Piaget pays homage to the brand’s most recognizable and iconic designs of the 1970’s that epitomized the free spirit of the decade.
