Extreme Measures: A Reflection
After series of discussions we are ought to watch a film which is related to our medical field in nursing. The movie entitled “Extraordinary Measures” is a medical-thriller moral dilemma about a good doctor who finds the mystery about the bizarre death of a homeless man while under his care having unusual symptoms, caused him to probe for answers in finding the cause of this death, but his body and all of his medical records vanished. The good doctor, Dr. Guy Luthan, a promising young physician practicing medicine at a central New York City hospital has a bright future ahead of him but it comes crashing down through a rapid change of events as he was to discover a secret of Dr. Lawrence Myrick, in which might took of his practice, or might be his life.
Even this film only depicted limited scenes about the use of technology by healthcare professionals in relation to nursing and medical informatics, but somehow we can proved that the use of it is very important and a very big help for them to make their work easier. The use of technology in patient record is very important because with just a single type and click we can find what we are looking about our patient, as compared to manually written records in which we have to read and scan the pages all together. The Management Information System (MIS) patient billing was also applied to the film as they are investigating in regards to their patient’s balance dues and what diagnostic test was used which lead to that amount.
In totality, I was really thrilled and amazed by how the story goes on. As an audience I had also thought of things that “What if this situation will really happened to me? Will I hinder Dr. Myrick’s vision of helping finding cure for paralysis? Or will I follow my moral beliefs and value the lives of those people in the experiement group?” This movie had broaden my realization on what decision to make in terms of what you believe is the right thing to do. Being in the healthcare profession is very challenging that we wanted to help every ill people to find a cure for their disease without harming other healthy people.
At one point the hero is asked by the villain: “If you could cure cancer by killing one person, wouldn't you have to do that?” My answer to that depends when the cure is really effective because I might waste someone else’s life without really finding the accurate cure. But when the cure is really effective, then it is up to the person’s decision if he/she wanted to sacrifice him/herself to be an evidence in such history, and I will follow his/her decision of killing him/her.
For me, the solution could probably should go with testing drugs in accordance to the right level such as first to the animals (such as rats) and if the drug goes well with the animal, we can proceed to let it tested to the next level which were healthy persons who themselves volunteered. It should abide the law and not violate human rights in which it is based on the person’s permission and right orientation to be under the experiment so that moral ethical issues can be avoided.
