Forget about babies crying on planes, let’s talk about Ezra crying on planes! Someone please give me an award for the title, I thought I was really clever.
CW: panic attack, plane??? heights?, fear of heights, unwanted touching (not sexual)
- - -
The take off was the worst.
Ezra couldn’t tear his eyes away from the window as the plane slowly gained height. His heart was going a mile a minute, he could hear the pounding of blood in his ears. His vision was distorted by tears, which had now completely overcome him. Don’t cry don’t cry don’t cry- A voice in his head chanted over and over again, though it did nothing except get him more worked up.
He felt like he was gonna die any second now- whether of a heart attack or due to the plane crashing; it was gonna happen any minute, it was gonna crash, it was gonna crash, he knew it!!
“Calm down, Ez.” Ezra distinctly heard Drew whisper into his ear. “Now.”
Finally tearing his eyes away from the window, Ezra buried his face into Drew’s shoulder, still gripping his captor’s hand.
“Hey- is everything okay?” Ezra heard a voice from his right ask, sounding concerned.
“Yeah, he’s just afraid of heights.” Drew answered, sounding equal parts concerned. Ezra hated- he hated that, how he could just act like he cared about his health after forcing him onto this plane in the first place!!
“Oh, I’m sorry.” The flight attendant said, her voice dripping with pity. “I can get some food if that would help.”
“Yes, please.” Drew stroked Ezra’s hair gently, prompting the boy to cry more.
Ezra don’t know how long he was sobbing into Drew’s shoulder. The flight attendant returned with a bag of trail mix. Ezra didn’t eat much of it.
An unknown amount of time had passed when the plane began to shake beneath them. Ezra suddenly found breathing hard. He felt like he might pass out.
“We are now experiencing some brief turbulence, please remain seated with your seatbelts on.” A voice from over the intercom spoke.
Ezra thought he would rather die than sit another second on this plane.
- - -
After what felt like hours, the overwhelming sense of panic had died down in Ezra. Drew was still holding him tightly, and gently running his hand through Ez’s hair, but Drew seemed either tired or done with Ezra’s antics.
Ezra was quietly crying, but now for a different reason than the height. The view outside was beautiful, he had to admit. The clouds created a white fluffy blanket below them, and the morning sun danced in rays over the white puffs.
All Ezra could think about know was the destination. How far away was he going? Nobody would even know who he was, much less that he needed help. Nobody would ever find him. If Jason couldn’t find him when he was in his own neighborhood, how in the world would Jason find him when he was who knows how many miles away?
Ezra didn’t even know where he was going; he was worrying too much at the gate to try and find a sign telling him where the plane was going.
Ezra closed his eyes, and started to daydream that he was back home. Or at work, or in class, he didn’t care anymore. He would give anything to be home.
- - -
The voice from over the intercom shook Ezra awake:
“—to the Santa Fe regional airport. Local time is 6:38 AM. The temperature is 43°. Please remain seated until...” they continue to speak. Ezra sat up, rubbing his eyes. Did they say Santa Fe, as in New Mexico? That was so far, he couldn’t be..
Ezra glanced out the window. The airplane had landed. Surrounding the airport was an unfamiliar city. Before he had time to fully take in his surroundings, he was being pulled to his feet by Drew.
“That wasn’t so bad, was it?” Drew ruffled Ezra’s hair one final time, Ezra looking up at Drew like a wounded puppy.
Ezra watched as Drew pulled their luggage out from the overhead bins, putting all the bags on one side so he still had a free hand, which he used to take Ezra’s.
“Don’t worry, Ez, we won’t be staying here long.” Drew whispered, kissing Ezra’s cheek.
Ezra shuddered. Nothing sounded worse right now than getting further from his hometown.
Hey! Hope you like this chapter! You don’t understand (you probably do) the amount of research on phones and tracing calls I had to do to make sure this chapter would even work. I did not proofread. Again, if you see any typos, no you didn’t<3. With that information, I hope you like it!
Ezra screamed and flailed and kicked and fought, though this had absolutely no affect on Damion.
As soon as Damion entered the living room, he threw Ezra to the floor, pressing his boot onto his chest, pinning him there. Ezra screamed in response.
“Listen closely because I’m only gonna say this once. You are not to, under any circumstance, attempt to resist against anything I do to you. Is that understood?” Damion’s voice was low as he threatened the younger boy.
“Yes- yes, yes, I understand!!” Ezra cried.
“Good.” Damion removed his boot from Ezra’s chest. Ezra lay there, his body unmoving apart from the shaking of his chest as he sobbed.
At this point, Drew had entered the house. He walked over to Ezra, kneeling down to his level.
“Shhh, don’t cry.” Drew scooped Ezra up, carrying him as if he was a baby. He set Ezra down on Damion’s couch, stroking his hair for a moment before standing up to his full height again.
“Would you mind showing me around? It looks really different since I’ve been here last.” Drew said pleasantly, returning to casually playing with Ezra’s hair. Ezra flinched at the touch.
“Yeah, sure!” Ezra could hear the smile in Damion’s voice.
“You don’t mind waiting here for me, do you, love?” Drew asked Ezra.
After a moment, Ezra shook his head. Drew smiled, leaning down to plant a kiss on his forehead. “I’ll be right back, don’t move.”
“Yeah, don’t move, or you might accidentally tip the house over the cliff.” Damion chuckled.
“Oh, shut up.” The younger brother laughed. “Let’s go.”
- - -
Damion’s living room was nice by Ezra’s standard, if you weren’t counting the view of the cliff edge and the mountains beyond that just outside the windows. The windows went from floor to high ceiling and they covered most of the western wall. The setting sun shone through those western windows, illuminating the living room with rays of golden light.
On the northern wall sat a stone fireplace, with a blue expensive looking rug on the floor directly in front of it. On the mantle were a few pictures, framed: one featuring a younger Drew and Damion, looking to be around ages 6 and 10. Another displayed the brothers in their teenage years, with an older man that Ezra could only assume was their father.
Before Ezra could observe the final walls in their full detail, Drew and Damion re-entered the living room. “Just passing through.” Drew smiled at Ezra cheerfully as he followed his brother up the stairs to the second floor.
Ezra sighed heavily, turning to look at the wall opposite of the wall with the fireplace on it. It had the archway entrance to the dining room and at the other end of the wall was the a hallway, lined with doors. Other than that, it was plain.
Hanging in between the entrances was a beautiful, custom-made painting of the view from the western windows. Ezra had to admit, the painting was amazingly beautiful and well-made. He just wished he could enjoy the real thing without feeling nauseous. Since he had started looking around, he had gotten over his initial fear of being so close to the cliff edge, and he had stopped crying, but he was still careful to avoid looking out the windows. He didn’t wanna start crying again.
On the last wall was the one with the front door and the staircase that Drew and Damion had ascended a few minutes earlier. Pressed against the staircase was a console table, with another picture- this one containing a woman holding a baby- and next to that, a telephone.
Ezra shot up from the couch in an instant. He knew he wasn’t supposed to leave the couch, but he had no idea when he would get this opportunity again. He crept over to the phone, snatching it up from the stand where it was charging. He heard Drew and Damion above him, and Ezra knew he had to make his call fast if he wanted to not be caught. Ezra hastily dialed the first number that came to mind; Jason’s. Thankfully, Ezra had it committed to memory by now. Ezra brought the phone to his ear and silently begged for Jason to pick up.
“Hello..?” Jason’s voice came over the receiver, clearly confused.
“It’s m-me.” Ezra stammered, his voice barely louder than a whisper.
“Oh my god- are you okay?! Did they hurt you, where are you?” Concern flooded into Jason’s tone, the words tumbling out in a rush.
“I’m-“ Ezra thought for a moment. “Fine? I- I don’t know where I am, they took me on an airplane and- and it landed in Santa Fe but then we got in the car and we drove for a really long time and now I don’t know where I am but there are lots of mountains and cliffs and I’m really scared, Jason, I’m really scared and-“ once Ezra started speaking, he couldn’t stop himself.
“Ezra- hey, calm down, I can’t- are you hurt, Ez?” Jason’s voice was still panicked, though now less so, as he tried to comfort Ezra.
“Um- a little.” Ezra sniffed, trying to hold back tears.
“What did they do to you..?”
“W-ell.” He fought to keep his voice steady. “They- Drew-“
Ezra froze as he heard the sound of creaking wood from the top of the stairs. Ezra glanced up- at the top of the stairs stood Drew, who was staring down at Ezra with a barely controlled fury in his eyes.
“And what do you think you’re doing?”
Ezra’s jaw dropped, and the phone slipped out of his hand, clattering to the floor. “I- it’s not-“
“It’s not what?” Drew’s glare didn’t falter as he quickly descended the stairs. Ezra could hear the faint sound of Jason screaming as Drew finished walking downstairs. Drew picked up the phone on the ground, hanging up on Jason.
Ezra stumbled backwards as he tried to flee from Drew as he approached him. In his panic, he tripped over his own feet and fell onto his back. Still, he continued to scramble back, until his back was pressed against the cold glass of a window.
Drew stood over Ezra, leaning down to whisper in the shaking boy’s ear:
Ezra payed attention this time as Drew lead him through the airport. Reading the signs, his fears were confirmed: Drew had taken Ezra across the country, and Ezra could do nothing to stop him.
Ezra didn’t attempt to resist as Drew took Ezra out of the airport. He was completely silent during the taxi ride, and as Drew pulled Ezra out of the taxi and into another hotel.
This time, Drew did not stop at the counter to get the key to the room. Instead, he continued to lead Ezra to the elevator- which was, unfortunately for Ezra, empty. Drew and Ezra rode upstairs, stopping at the 3rd floor.
Ezra followed Drew down the hallway, stopping next to him next to a door with 318 written on it. Drew knocked three times, and the door swung open.
Standing before Ezra was an older looking version of Drew: he was tall with dark hair identical to Drew’s. His eyes were the same shade of brown. The only difference Ezra could see was the difference in height between Drew and this new person- Drew was a couple inches shorter- and this new person wore glasses.
“Hey!” Drew grinned.
“Hi, come it!” The man smiled at Drew, completely ignoring Ezra.
Drew entered the room, leaving Ezra at the door, but the other man grabbed Ezra’s arm and pulled him inside the room before Ez even had a chance to be relieved.
Surprised, Ezra stumbled in, tripping over his own feet a bit. Drew caught Ezra before he could actually fall.
“Ezra, this is my brother, Damion. Damion, this is Ezra’s my boyfriend.” Drew smiled
“I’m not- I’m not your boyfriend.” Ezra stammered. “I broke up with you and then you- you kidnapped me.”
“You speak when spoken to.” Damion’s voice was icy cold. “And don’t argue with Drew. In fact, I think your little outburst deserves some punishment, don’t you?” Damion glanced at Drew.
Drew nodded, smirking a little. “I do, actually.”
Ezra’s eyes widened. “That’s not fair! I- I- don’t, that’s not fair!!”
“Don’t tell me what’s fair and what isn’t.” Damion snapped. “You wouldn’t mind if I did the honors, would you?” Damion turned back to Drew.
“Of course not, just remember that he has to be able to walk out of the hotel.” Drew grinned and sat down on the bed, watching.
“Wait- wait, wait please-“ Ezra begged as Damion approached them.
Damion’s first punch collided with the side of Ezra’s face. Pain shot through his face the second the hit had landed. Ezra stumbled backwards from the force of the blow, tripping over his feet for the second time this day, though this time, he was sent tumbling to the floor.
Ezra scuffled backwards on his hands and knees, backing further away from Drew’s brother. “No, no no no- stop, I’m sorry-“ Ezra begged, his voice cracking on the last word as tears began to materialize at the corner of his eyes.
Drew laughed a little. “I should do this to you more often.”
“Haven’t you done anything to him since you’ve gotten him?” Damion asked as if Ezra wasn’t there, delivering a kick to the boy’s ribs as he finished speaking, eliciting a whimper from Ezra.
“I have, just not much, since we’ve been busy.” Drew shrugged. “I plan to more once we’re at your house.”
“Yeah, that makes sense.” Damion nodded. He knelt down next to Ezra, whose back was now pressed up against the wall with nowhere to go to. He dug into his pocket, pulling out a small switchblade knife, popping the blade out.
Ezra’s eyes widened. “Wait!! Wait- don’t stab me again, I’m sorry, I really didn’t mean it!!”
“Aw.” Damion laughed. “Too bad.” The man ran the blade across Ezra’s cheek, the skin splitting open, blood already dribbling across the moderately deep wound.
Ezra, terrified, let out a sound of pain. Damion laughed a response: “Did that hurt?”
When Ezra nodded, Damion seemed satisfied. “Good. Keep crying.” Pulling the knife away from away from Ezra’s cheek, Damion didn’t hesitate before driving the dagger into Ezra’s shoulder.
Ezra shrieked in pain, immediately trying hopelessly to tear the knife back out of his body. He didn’t have to try for long, as Damion ripped the knife out as suddenly as he had planted it in the boy’s shoulder.
The hotel room was completely silent, apart from Ezra’s pained sobs, as the two older men waited to see if Ezra’s scream was noticed.
After a moment, there was a knock at the door.
“Shit, now you’ve done it.” Drew stood up, walking to the door.
Damion clamped his hand over Ezra’s mouth, and the other on his bleeding shoulder. “Shut up.” He snarled.
Meanwhile, Drew walked to the hotel door and opened it. Ezra could hear the smile in his voice when he spoke. “Hi, can I help you?”
“Hi! I’m just- we heard a scream, and we just wanted to check if everything was okay.”
“Oh, sorry about that-“ he laughed. “My friends and I were just fooling around, sorry.”
“Oh, alright.”
There was a pause before Drew closed the door again. He turned around, walking back towards Ezra and Damion. “We should probably get going now- shit, you’re getting blood on the floor.” Drew sighed.
“Don’t worry, I’ll clean it.” Damion stood up and walked away from Ezra again.
Drew knelt down next to Ezra, grabbing his arm and lifting him to his feet. Ezra sobbed into Drew’s shoulder, having no shame in being physically close to his captor.
Drew took off the jacket he was wearing, putting it on Ezra. “Shh, you’re alright.”
All Ezra could do to protest was shake his head and cry more. So far, every time someone had come close to helping him, they were always convinced by Drew that everything was alright; at this point, Ezra was starting to doubt whether he would ever be saved.
Hi everyone:)!! This chapter was so so fun to write- Jason is honestly my favorite character to write for some reason. If it’s bad, I’m blaming it on the fact that this was written from the hours of midnight to one am. Anyways, I hope u liked it!! :D <3
CW: blood mention, reopening of a wound, kidnapping
- - -
Jason’s hands were shaking as he pulled out his phone. Holy shit. In the worst case scenario, he never in a million years would have even imagined this happening.
Right now he was seated in his car, just outside of his apartment building. Just a few minutes ago, he had received an email from their local police station. He was relieved when he saw it first; maybe they had found Ezra!! Or- even if it hadn’t, they had at least kept their promise to keep Jason updated. But as Jason’s eyes darted across the contents of the email and he realized what this meant, he was overwhelmed with not only horror, but anger.
He hurriedly dialed Drew’s number. “I swear to god, if he doesn’t pick up.” Jason muttered angrily.
Fortunately for Jason, Drew did pick up, just a few seconds later. “Hey, Jason, what’s up?” Drew’s naturally charismatic voice came from over the speakers of Jason’s phone.
“Where’s Ezra?” Jason’s voice was stark in contrast to Drew’s, determination and anger keeping his voice harsh and devoid of friendliness.
“What do you mean- Did you find him?”
“I’m not stupid, I know you have him!!” Jason yelled now, his frustration easily heard in his tone.
“Jason- calm down.” Drew’s tone was equally frustrated, although his was cold, as apposed to Jason’s fiery hot anger. “I can’t understand you when you’re upset like this.”
“I found the blood at your house.” Jason snapped. “The police tested it, we know it’s Ezra’s.”
There was a long pause from Drew, before he laughed quietly. “I really thought I cleaned that all up.”
Hearing these words sent Jason panicking into overdrive. “Where is he?!” Jason screamed into the phone, both terrified and furious on behalf of his missing friend.
“Oh, please. Calm down. I took someone who wouldn’t even be missed.”
“Yeah, well, he’s missed!” Fury soaked every syllable of Jason’s voice. “Where is he?!”
“Quiet down, you’re giving me a headache. I have him right here, actually. Say hi, baby.”
There was a pause, before Jason heard the sound of Ezra’s muffled cries and sounds of pain.
Jason’s eyes widened. “What did you do to him?” Oh god. It couldn’t be that bad, right?
“Nothing much, just roughed him up a little. Nothing he won’t walk off.”
“Let him go, he’s done nothing wrong!!” Jason fought to keep his voice at a relatively low volume. He wasn’t quite sure what hurt more; Ezra’s absence, or Drew’s betrayal. Jason had known Drew for nearly a decade. Was he like this the whole time?
“I never said he did.” Drew chuckled.
“Let him go!!”
Drew’s words hit him like a slap to the face. “No.”
“No. I won’t let him go. And I doubt you’ll have any luck finding him. Just quit looking for him, and stay out of my way, Jason.”
And with that, Drew hung up.
- - -
Ezra was lying across the backseat of Damion’s car as he drove when Drew got the call.
His wrists and ankles were bound with thick rope and duct tape was wrapped around his head a few times, gagging him hopelessly.
The car shook beneath them, as Damion drove them over yet another bump. Ezra whimpered as the shaking of the car jostled his now bandaged shoulder, drawing out a shock of pain from the wound.
Ezra could barely make out the words Drew was saying. He was barely even conscious. Was Drew talking about Jason? Ezra forced his eyes open, struggling to clear his mind to listen.
“...calm down. I can’t understand you when you’re upset like this.”
There was a long silence before Drew laughed a little. “I really thought I cleaned that all up.”
Now, Ezra could very faintly hear screaming from Drew’s phone.
“Oh, please.” Drew laughed again “Calm down. I took someone who wouldn’t even be missed.”
The screaming from Drew’s phone grew louder, and now Ezra could confirm the voice was Jason. A part of him was thankful. Another part of him just Jason to stop talking to Drew. Ezra was trying his best to be good to keep Jason safe, and Jason wasn’t helping.
“Quiet down, you’re giving me a headache. I have him right here, actually. Say hi, baby.”
Drew moved the phone away from his ear, holding it out to Ezra. When Ezra remained silent, Damion stopped the car. He leaned over, turning to face Ezra in the backseat. Damion grabbed Ezra’s shoulder, digging his fingers into the wound there, pulling it open. Ezra screamed into the gag, tears instantly falling.
Drew laughed a little, pulling the phone back to his ear. Ezra wasn’t even paying attention to Drew’s conversation. He just... missed Jason. He so desperately wanted everything to be normal.
Damion grinned at the sobbing boy in the backseat. He pulled his hand out of the wound, Ezra’s blood staining Damion’s hands red.
Hi all!! I hope you’re ready for a very sad chapter (or at least, I hope this managed to seem sad)! This one’s from Jason’s perspective, as he looks for his lost friend :(
CW: emotional manipulation, missing person, implied past self-harm
- - -
Ever since Jason became friends with Ezra, he had taken it upon himself to look out for Ez.
Jason knew he didn’t really have many other friends. They met in their senior year in high school, where Ezra was a quiet kid, and he kept to himself. Occasionally he was picked on by bigger kids for being more of a social outcast, but since Jason was a stronger kid- he played on the high school football team- he kept an eye on Ezra and told his bullies to knock it off whenever they were at it.
Over the years, Jason had sort of adopted Ezra into his friend group. One of the people in Jason’s friend group being Drew, who Jason noticed took a particular liking for Ezra. Jason watched as the two started dating. He was there for Ezra when the two broke up a couple years later.
He took care of Ezra when he learned of his self-destructive tendencies years earlier. He was doing better in recent times, but he was still worried about him, which is why Jason made Ezra promise that he could swing by in the mornings before he went to class, just to check on him.
When Jason knocked at Ezra’s apartment door the night after Ezra made plans to meet up and talk things out with Drew, and received no answer, he wasn’t particularly worried. The kid probably just slept in. Maybe he had a late night, he thought, pulling out his phone to dial his number.
The phone rang for some time before Jase was sent to a familiar voicemail; ‘Hi, this is Ezra, if I know you, leave a message, and I’ll probably call you back soon. Okay, bye!’
Jason sighed, hanging up before he could leave a message. He texted Ezra a few times, waiting outside the door. He had to get going soon if he wanted to make it in time for his class. He shrugged, glancing at his clock. He could probably spare ten more minutes.
Ten minutes later, none of his texts had been read and he never got a call back. Jason frowned, calling again. Again, he was sent straight to voicemail. He stared at the ticking hand of the clock on his wristwatch- now he was starting to push it. He could probably stay for five more minutes.
Five minutes, six more calls, and many, many worried texts later, Ezra was still radio silent. This was completely unlike him, Jason thought. He never ignored him, and he rarely slept in. Something was wrong.
Jason walked back outside to his car, racking his brain for where Ezra could be. Eventually, he came up with a short list: He could’ve stayed the night at Drew’s, he maybe was at his work, and, worst case scenario he had run away or hurt himself or something awful. Starting his car, Jason turned on some music to try and distract himself from Ezra’s disappearance, as he began to drive to Drew’s house.
- - -
Twenty minutes later, Jason was on Drew’s doorstep. Raising his fist, Jase knocked on the door. He waited a minute for a response, before bringing his fist down on the door, knocking again.
He paused for a minute. There was a complete silence from within the house- before Jason could’ve sworn he heard a scream. Oh, gods, was that Ezra?!
“Drew, are you home? Is that Ezra?” Jason yelled, his fear for Ezra’s safety growing with each passing moment.
The house fell quiet, before Jason heard the nearly silent sound of footsteps approaching the entryway. Jason watched with worried eyes as the door open, only to be met with not Ezra’s face, but Drew’s.
“Hi, Jason!” Drew smiled. Drew always had been incredibly charming, ever since Jason met him, and this was a smile Jase had seen him use a hundred times on other people in order to get what he wanted. “Do you need something?”
“Um, yeah.” Jason smiled a little, trying not to be overly suspicious of the situation. Drew was his friend, still. “I was wondering if Ezra was there? He said he was going to meet you someplace last night and he’s not home or responding to my texts or calls..”
“No,” Drew thought for a minute. “I haven’t seen or heard from him since last night. That’s weird. Maybe you should check his work, see if he’s there.”
“I thought I heard him yelling.” Jason cut to the chase, his tone unyielding.
“You probably just imagined it.” Drew shrugged, his voice equally stern.
“Maybe.” Jason sighed, peaking around Drew to see the inside of the foyer. “Can I just check inside real quick? I’m just worried.”
“I’m telling you, he’s not here.” Drew sighed defeatedly. “How about this, if he’s not at his work or any of our other friends houses, then you can poke around my house. Deal?”
Jason had come to know a lot of things since high school, and he knew Drew. As Jason knew him, Drew was cunning, but honest. There was no winning when he was like this. Drew was a lot of things but.. he wasn’t a kidnapper, or at least Jason didn’t believe he was. “Yeah, alright, sorry to bother you.”
“It’s alright, I understand you’re worried. Text me when you find him, okay?” Drew grinned, beginning to close the door.
“I will.” Jason sighed, watching now as the door closed. With one last sparing glance at the house, Jase got in his car and drove away.
- - -
Jason had no luck finding Ezra at his work, or at his friends house, or at any nearby businesses and restaurants.
Jason was about to give up and go to the police when his phone began to ring. Glancing at the phone’s surface and seeing Drew’s name, Jason picked up.
“Hey, Drew?”
“Hey! Listen, I didn’t tell you this morning because it totally escaped my mind, but I’m gonna be at a family member’s house for at least the weekend. Family emergency. Have you found Ez?”
Jason frowned. “No, I.. haven’t.”
“He’s gonna turn up eventually, Jase, don’t worry. Hey, if you still wanna poke around my house, there’s a spare key under the doormat.”
“Alright.” Jason ran a hand through his hair. “Listen, I’m sorry for accusing you like that earlier. I don’t-“ he sighed. “I was just worried.”
“No, no, it’s fine! Don’t worry about it, seriously Jason. It’s completely fine.”
“Thanks, Drew, I’ll let you know if I find him.” Jason sniffed. Shit, he really didn’t want to start crying. Not now, not when Ez was missing.
“When, not if. When you find him. I’ll talk to you later.”
Jason couldn’t even choke out a goodbye before the tears really started to come. God, he was so, so scared for Ezra.
Hi!! This chapter is from Drew’s perspective (Though it’s still in 3rd person because it’s just easier for me.) because Tabea said it was a good idea and I had no other ideas so here we are :)!! Its not the best but that’s okay!! I hope u like it!!
CW: Intimate whump, Drew being a bad person, fear of heights
- - -
Drew was pissed.
As soon as he hung up, he muttered a string of curses under his breath. He really didn’t expect Jason to be as much of a threat as he was turning out to be.
“What did he say?” Drew’s older brother asked. Damion’s car was still stopped, and without the hum of the engine to fill the silence, Ezra’s quiet whimpers from the backseat were now audible.
Drew sighed. “They’ve identified his blood from my living room.”
“Really?” Damion looked surprised.
“Yeah. Once we get back onto a main road, we should get rid of our phones.”
“Good idea.” Drew’s brother sighed loudly. “Is that all?”
“Yeah, we can’t really do anything right now.” Drew rubbed his temples. This was starting to give him a headache.
“Alright.” Damion started driving again. As the car ran over a large bump again almost immediately, there was a muffled sound of pain from the backseat. Drew turned around to face Ezra.
“Do you feel any better, baby?” Drew’s frustrated expression quickly morphed into one of concern and empathy. A part of Drew actually did feel bad for Ez; he was sensitive; he barely had any tolerance to pain, and this was all new to him.
Ezra didn’t answer. Instead, he just stared back at Drew with his big brown pathetic eyes, wordlessly begging to be let go. Drew sighed.
“Don’t look at me like that. Want me to take off the ropes?”
Ezra nodded, and Drew smiled kindly at him. “Come closer, baby.”
Ezra obliged, inching closer to Drew. Drew grabbed Ezra’s wrists, undoing the ropes. After a moment of seeing Ezra’s relief, he carefully pulled the duct tape away from his mouth.
“What do you say?” Drew taunted, teasing.
Ezra didn’t want to say it, Drew could tell from the way he glared at the floor of the car. Yet he still spoke the words Drew was looking to hear; “Thank you.”
“That wasn’t so hard, was it?” Drew didn’t know why Ezra could be so stubborn at times. Unfastening his seatbelt, he climbed out of the passenger seat and into the backseat, next to where Ez was lying down. “Hi.” Drew smiled at Ezra. Just like he would when everything was normal.
There was a long pause before Ezra spoke again, but when he did, it was barely audible and his voice was tight from trying not to cry.
“I wanna go home, Drew.”
The sentence momentarily caught Drew off-guard. Drew thought Ezra would’ve been smarter and that he would have known that letting him go was out of the question.
“I know, love.” Drew sighed heavily. “You’ll be okay. I got you.”
The only response Drew got back was the sound of Ezra crying softly.
- - -
Half an hour later, Damion had lead them back to a main roadway, slowing down enough for Drew to toss his phone into the grass on the side of the road. Damion waited until they were driving through a town about 30 miles away before he too, tossed his phone out onto the vacant sidewalk.
“There, all done.” Damion grinned at Drew in the rear view mirror.
“We’ll have to get rid of your laptop once we get home too,” Drew mused. “How much longer, anyways?”
“Two hours and forty five minutes.” Damion sighed loudly. “Might wanna make yourself comfortable.”
“Great.” Drew sighed himself. Ezra had begun to cry again for what was probably the millionth time that day. Not wanting to listen to that, Drew climbed back into the front seat, turning the volume up on the music.

Three hours later, Damion pulled into the driveway of his house. Drew had taken great pleasure in watching the anxious expression on Ezra’s face as Damion drove higher and higher up the steep and rocky path to his house.
Damion’s house was located near a small town in Colorado, right near the Rocky Mountains. Distanced from the rest of the town, the house was nestled up in the mountains, just a few hundred feet from the edge of a cliff.
The altitude created cold temperatures; even though it was sunny and perfectly warm right now, Drew knew that as soon as the sun set, the temperature consistently dropped below freezing.
While the path to Damion’s house was mostly wooded, there were places where the forest simply stopped, revealing the sheer cliff edge. Whenever the car drove past one of these places, Ezra’s expression went from anxious to full-out terror, literally shaking with fear. Drew laughed whenever this happened.
Eventually, Damion pulled into the driveway. “Finally.” Drew sighed, the seatbelt unbuckling with a click. He opened the door, walking over to the backseat door of the car.
As soon Drew opened the car door, Ezra backed up to the other side, as far away from Drew as he could. “I’m not- don’t- I’m not going closer to that cliff!!” He cried, pressing his back against the other, still closed, car door.
“Oh, please. It’s not like I’m gonna throw you off of it.” Drew huffed.
“Yet.” Damion snickered, opening the other door to the backseat.
Ezra, who was leaning on the door that Damion just opened, tumbled out of car and fell onto the harsh, gravel driveway. Drew watched as Damion picked Ezra up over his shoulder, carrying towards the house; Ezra screaming and fighting and begging for Drew to stop him.
It was all Drew could do to keep a straight face. Oh, this was gonna be fun.
