i know people have pointed out that for almost all of the gaang members, aang was their first friend, which is both tragic (for obvious reasons) as well as beautiful that aang was able to give them something the war / their parents took from them.

but honestly? the same thing can be said for the krew. think about it: korra was stuck in that white lotus compound for like fourteen years. the only people she’s met who are around her age are eska and desna—and they don’t seem like they would’ve ever been interested in being korra’s friend. when she gets to republic city, she treats the airbender kids as her friends (even though the oldest one is like half her age) and even refers to naga as her best friend. korra’s first human friends her age are the rest of the krew.

mako and bolin had each other, of course, but i doubt they really made friends with anyone else. they were orphans trying their best to survive, and while i imagine bolin was friendly with a number of people, he probably never had the chance to form any close relationships outside of mako. then they were involved with the triple threats, a group of adults who were manipulative to them and not really concerned with them making friends. when mako first meets asami and korra, it’s painfully obvious that he doesn’t know how to talk to either of them or manage his relationships with them—because he’s never had a friend outside of bolin before.

asami seems like she shouldn’t have had any problems making friends—she’s beautiful, kind, and probably went to an actual school in republic city. but…she never mentions any. it’s always just her dad and her company. because of her father’s position, she was probably too sheltered to make any actual friends. and when her father is revealed to be manufacturing weapons for the equalists, she sticks with the krew because they are all she has. the krew is all each other have, which is why they are all so ride-or-die for each other.

and like…the krew aren’t kids. they’re not 12 and 14 like the gaang. bolin’s on the younger side in book 1, being 16, but mako and asami are 18. they’re legal adults who have never had a real friend…until the avatar shows up in town and they all get pulled into her crazy adventures. there are plenty of jokes (all valid) about the krew all being simps for korra, but her arrival in republic city brought them all together. all four of them are people who have never known true friendship with their peers until they come together but when they do, they truly and honestly and authentically love each other which is absolutely beautiful.
